New Star Trek series - 2017

I read an article yesterday about the actor who plays the engineer guy in this, claiming that Kevin Spacey had made advances on him when he was younger, I really had no idea that Kevin Spacey was gay, was quite surprised to find that out.

But the thing I've been wondering about the engineer, he is so blond, particularly the eyebrows etc, that I've been trying to work out if his character is supposed to be an albino or something, or whether its just thats how he looks.
maybe he is but that's his personal life. It's possible he is but don't think that matters.

Read it today. Was surprised also.

I am not sure if they could have made a worse star trek if they tried.
Urgh, what the hell is this thing with a Trek badge on it? Really hate what they've done to the Klingons :o

I've recently binged through Voyager and did all the Star Trek films again so was quite hyped for this but now I'm definitely not so keen.

Totally agree that the Expanse is showing how it's done (even if some of the FX are a bit dodgy). Frankie Adams' character in TE is infinitely more likeable.

I'll wait until the next season is out and look at whether reviews justify giving it a chance.

The Expanse is definitely the current benchmark

Have to admit that I grew to really like The Expanse, it took me 2 attempts mind you. I first tried about a year ago, watched the first episode and really didnt click with it at all and thought it was pretty poor, then about 4 months ago I tried again and for some reason this time it stuck and I really enjoyed it

I've been really disappointed with the picture quality on Netflix. Is it supposed to look so grainy? Is that an effect they wanted?

I've also noticed problems with Stranger Things, like someone is switching the colour temperature from warm to cool and back again.

I'll stick with Star Trek to see how it goes but it isn't essential viewing, it's not like "woo Monday, Star Trek day". When they've finished virtue signalling with all their diverse crew then they might be able to knuckle down with an actual story in the episodes.

Do you have a TV that supports Dolby Vision as both those shows broadcast in DV if supported.

Nope, that only does very basic HDR.

Discovery picture usually looks really good in Dolby Vision on my LG B6 OLED, despite only being 1080p. I did see a minor bit of grain on a face, but that was for a few seconds in one episode.

On Netflix it only says HDR. There are no options to select anything else. So I guess I'm stuck with grain-o-vision. A bit disappointed because it looks like I'm watching a dodgy torrent. I haven't had this problem on any other shows.

They seem to be putting the squeeze on their bitrates these days, I watched an episode of Stranger Things last night where it maxed at something like 2.87Mbps for 1080p according to the Netflix app on my TV. I know they have some clever tech to optimise bandwidth, but there's only so much that can do.

Well if the quality is dropping for whatever reason and they're putting prices up again then I think a few more people besides myself will be cancelling.

At the moment I'm only really watching Stranger Things, Star Trek and Rick & Morty. I haven't got round to watching the new season of Narcos but I find most of the Netflix exclusive shows to be garbage. I don't think I'd miss much but the kids enjoy watching all their shows so it gets a stay of execution for now.
