New Star Trek series - 2017

Lots of interesting opinions and view points.

Personally I'd like to see the new series set within Abrahams re-invisioned universe, simply because it offers the potential for many new stories over several new TV shows and future movies..
Ideally set 15-25 years after the events of Star Trek 2009 2013, the new crew grew up in the shadow of Kirk and his crew of the Enterprise, been taught of his exploits and trying to better the federation.
From there they tell, the story of discovery and worrensing relations with the Klingons, Romulan's...
Ultimately having an overshadowing threat, with real consequences, ie crew we like been killed, not just the Red uniforms of doom..

I suggest this simply because I loved TNG with the Borg threat. DS9 with the Dominion threat an wars, VOY for been lost at the othe end of the Milkyway Galaxy.
And the Zindi threat in Enterprise.
All initial and subcequent seasons helped to create characters and develop them, but the underlying threats of the series helped make the best seasons in each show in my opinion. Ideally 10 episodes about 50 minutes in length.

Warp speed set to max...

The downfall of Star Trek (in TV form) was that it was a case of 'too little, too late' when they finally cottoned on to the fact that people wanted epic story arcs instead of self-contained episodes with little continuity. Enterprise was pretty good fun, too - apart from the nausea-inducing title song.

Hopefully they do something fresh and original with the new show.

I think Enterprise showed this the most. The first 2 seasons are just plan boring where as 3 and 4 are good, 3 itself being one of the best seasons of trek imo probably only beaten out by season 6 of DS9.

Oh god... really. :(

In all honesty, I'm not sure what I want from Trek anymore. But, it isn't multi season spanning story arcs with tedious filler episodes and the inevitable damp squib grand finale.

It's not, Paramount own the rights to the films, not CBS so CBS have to go with the Prime Universe rather than the JJ-verse.

Current prevailing theory is that it'll be set somewhere between Undiscovered Country and the Next Generation. The exploded planet in the trailer was a possible hint at praxis.

There's also rumours that it may be in an anthology format meaning a new crew/story every season which could be interesting.

Why on earth would they split the rights? That is such recipe for fubar.

Given that the JJverse often feels like Star Trek in name only it may be no loss.

This is gonna bomb!

If it was in the original universe, set in the 25th century with cutting edge technology then fine (like the original one was all those years ago). Looking at the trailer, it has a new universe feel to it......it will be written to appeal to the american teens and twenty somethings.....it won't be good. It will be shockingly bad!

Don't judge it too early. When I heard that Stargate Universe was going to have a younger cast to appeal to a younger audience, I thought it was going to be rubbish, but it was actually very good - still got cancelled though!

They were in the Delta Quadrant. OK, my Star Trek knowledge is very rusty but I can only think of one time in the entire history of the show where they went outside the Milky Way. (ST:TNG Where No One Has Gone Before).

Now, someone is going to correct me. Please do. :p

Actually, in the Original Series they crossed the galactic barrier and left the Milky Way (Episode 1x01 - Where No Man Has Gone Before) :p

I don't know, the calibre of people that they're bring together for this actually gives me hope. Despite this being a cynical ploy by CBS to sell their new online distribution platform it might turn out okay.

I'm certainly more excited for this than Star Trek Beyond.

Only in so much as being in a completely unexplored part of the Milky Way and detached from Star Fleet is no different from a plot perspective than being in Andromeda :p
