New Star Trek series - 2017

Hmm, given that I have never thought much of the old Star Trek (by old, I am actually mainly thinking Next Gen as opposed to Original, though Original had the same flaws but did have awesome characters which was a redeeming feature), I would happily give this a try.
As a non Trekky I didn't mind the new movies either so they cannot destroy any hardened beliefs on how it 'should' be. As long as they avoid what made the Star Trek painful to watch for me, then I would be content. That means:
No god awful outfits
No ponsy looking phasers
An actual meaningful story, rather than entire seasons being nothing more than what one would call filler episodes these days.
And, probably an unpopular opinion, but a ship that is actually capable of kicking butt - they may be on a 'peace' mission but going around dangerous space in a giant Sky Dish poorly equipped for battle is just a bad idea (note: I have no issue with them keeping the classic Sky Dish design-else it wouldn't be Star Trek, just have it better equipped).

.

It's not that they're badly equipped, it's just that the other major powers are pretty much on par.
They only fall short when facing big bads like the Borg etc.

Not waiting to be shot at first would help sometimes though :p

It shows that you have never watched Star Trek :D

Sci fi outfits always date especially when the run is so long.

As for story arcs later episodes of next gen were great and DS9 had some of the best written story arcs in sci fi (and the worst ending :()

Hasn't been the same since TNG finished. The original and TNG were awesome though, love watching reruns on SyFy.

Never really got into DS9 and Voyager was pretty much garbage imo. The one with the guy from Quantum Leap never gripped me either :(

DS9 is arguably the best of them all plot/character development wise!

Enterprise got really good from season 3, the whole Xindi arc was brilliant, and season 4's mini-arcs were all great. It had just started getting into it's stride when they pulled the plug. Which is a real shame as they were building up to the whole Romulan War/Creation of the Neutral Zone/Founding of the Federation, which would have been epic! Fortunately the books did a great job of telling that story.

There was always a small part of me that would liked to have seen a series set in the 29th century where the federation have taken on a role of temporal policing. I think it was captain Braxton in Voyager who had the time ship?

The fact that they date was not the issue - they were simply awful, suggesting the future had our space explorers strutting around in full suit spandex was rather depressing. At least in the original Star Trek you could forgive them because it was old enough that they didn't know better, but TNG was late 80s and despite fashion faux pas of that era, they should have known better than to keep with the similar design of the Original.

Regarding story arcs, you are right that I would not have been aware of TNG actually having a worthwhile one later in its life as I had lost interest before then.

Naturally not every show is for everyone's taste, I was just pointing out that a rebooted Star Trek may not be an awful thing even if it is lacking faith to the original

In the past 1-2 years I’ve re-watched both TNG and TOS in the re-masters forms for the first time in 10+ years i was hoping they would give DS9 the remaster treatment but atlas CBS dismantled the team that did those re-masters, sigh. It’s not helped that someone rebuilt/rendered bits of the “Scarface of Angels” battle teasing me of what might have been. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lymh5p6UbbU

As you can tell DS9 is my favourite of the trek shows by far, again I’m re-watching it atm (just finished season 4. The first two and a half seasons where meh and felt like bad copy of TNG, but then they drip fed the Dominion story arc and the show really got into its stride in the 4th season openers “The way of the warrior” and “The Visitor” (with Tody “candyman” tod and Andrew Robinson (Garak) daughter. This is while keeping to the core start trek feeling (well to me) of morality story’s/ tails of the human condition.

The ending with Sisko was very meh but that all made up for by ……

Garak he's bloody awesome, my favcharacter in any TV show.

TNG is classic ofc but TOS was a little dry for me bar some classic eps. Star Trek 6 is my favourite movie followed by Karn and First Contact.

Voyager again started poorly got more interesting when 7 or 9 came in (13 year old me at the time liked that lol) but went downhill, overused the Borg, made them meh, less threatening etc like there where struggling for Idea.
Enterprise had a better start but was slow to find it feat and by the time it did in S4 is was canned.

The Trek reboot movies, I thing are a travesty and not very star trek at all. They are just forgettable Sci fi action adventure movies with a thin star trek skin. It was clear Paramount needed a franchise to make them regular cash like Disney do with Marvel movies etc and the Star Trek reboot movies where the result. That being said forgetting they were start trek they were enjoyable but won’t last the test of time.

The new ship which is based on the old mcquarrie design from tos ish era.

Cant see it looking good in space scenes tbh like in a fight. Also news that its not going to be episodic like tng etc is a bad move imo. Ds9 got away with it mostly having a long story arc as it was on a station with interesting characters but a ship show with a long 13 episode arc i dunno. I have that with dark matter and killjoys and i dont like the long story and wished it was like trek with 1 ep per unique story with the occasional story arc over a few eps but not too much.

There's some McQuarrie there, but maybe a hint of a D7? Federation/Klingon hybrid?

If they can map out a great arc like B5 and keep the episode count down so it doesn't run out of steam I'll be happy.

I disagree some of the best seasons of trek outside of DS9 imo was season 3 and 4 of Enterprise and part of the reason for this was the longer stories.

That ship looks awful :(

Yep :(

Also USS Discovery, give me Voyager vibes and that's not good :(
