New Superman is..

The people who would moan about a white black panther are racist! :p

It's more to do with established history of the characters, catwoman is a villain of the week type of character. Black Panther has an Established history too. Captain Marvel...well yeah no one cares about her either.

Was there this furore when Halle Berry played Catwoman?

I don't remember caring at the time.

No because it was **** anyway, and Catwoman had basically had a single movie appearance at that point.

Compared to Superman, where we've had the original Movie series, the Brandon Routh failed reboot, and the 3 DC EU Movies, as well as numerous TV series (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Smallville etc), where Superman/Clark has been portrayed by a white man

Did anyone even care about the Catwoman movie though? Anyone on here seen it?

The first time I'd seen Catwoman was on TV in the early 80's and she was played by Eartha Kitt (a black lady) when I saw those re-runs of the 60's TV show. I had no problem with seeing the same character played by a white lady in other episodes, I just put it down to a casting change without caring about the actresses skin colour.

So are Johnathan and Martha now black as well? How did they pass off black baby superman as their own if not?

There are multiple Supermans in the multiverse, this one looks to be Calvis Ellis. He has nothing to do with Johnathan and Martha.

These comments though seriously, why is it such an issue?

Catwoman was before rebooting characters in a soulless identity focussed way became a regular affair. It gets a pass for being crap before the well was poisoned.

Also Captain Marvel hugely benefitted from being before the culminating films in a 10 year multi billion dollar franchise. It literally couldn’t fail the momentum was huge. Like wise Black Panther got a soft boot in a major cross over film and was directly before Infinity Wars, no chance it was failing. Good marketing it ensured riskier properties succeeded.

Because the media are making it an issue, and people are reacting like the media want them to.

Note that The Mirror is not reporting it as "Michael B Jordan tipped to be the next Superman", which is one way of phrasing it, but

New Superman movie 'will star a black actor for the first time'

It has been revealed that the next Superman movie is due to feature both a black director and a black actor in the lead role for the first time ever in a DC movie.

They are making a race issue out of it.

EDIT: if you look at all the online articles reporting on Berry playing Catwoman pre-2005, not one of them mentions her race.

Captain Marvel made $1.1 billion.

More than Batman Vs Superman.

The issue with stating earnings for a "divisive" film thats part of a huge franchise is that people still need to pay to see a film and it's only afterwards that they'll decide whether its good or bad, but by that point they've already spent their cash. So if you want to see any box-office back-lash to a film you need to look at the next film in the franchise to see if there's any negative monetary reaction. For example The Last Jedi did well in the box office but the next SW film SOLO flopped hard for a few reasons but a big one being the negative reaction of cash paying fans to TLJ.

This is why I don't read those things.

So you're saying it's about the popularity? I wonder if it would be OK if a white man played the next Black Panther? Black Panther is not as popular as Superman or Batman, but I imagine a lot of people would have something to say.

There would be BLM folk with pitchforks in the street looting and setting fire to things. Nobody would dare cast a white person as the next Black Panther.

Might be an opportunity if they gave superman the personality of Samuel L Jacksons character form Pulp Fiction. Superman saying "mother******" before laying into an opponent would be good for a laugh. :p

Wasn't he a superhero that was ""Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound!" - hmmmmmm, sounds veryyyyyyyy familiar :D

However, he was black so to modern studio execs Hancock and his story don't exist anymore. Apparently they believe that a black man's story isn't good enough now so they need to race swap a strong white man's story instead ..............who was the racists again? :D
