New system for my lad

Just to note, first boot on AM5 can take awhile so don't panic if things don't immediately happen. The system will power up and you'll see fans spinning etc, but it could take as long as 15-20 mins before things start moving.

Booting up after that point will be more in line with what you're used to with other systems, the first time you do with AM5 it needs to figure out how to use your RAM.

There's a few good video guides out there for AM5 that might be helpful to you, but otherwise take your time and just enjoy the process. @ben1987 advising to install a lot of the components prior to putting things in the case is excellent advice, pop the motherboard on a clean wood surface or even just on top of the box it came in (do not put the anti-static bag under it).

With the Phantom Spirit heatsink, what I'd personally do is install the mounting bracket as per the instructions and then after you've put the motherboard in the case and all other components/wiring etc are in place mount the big lumpy tower cooler to the bracket.

Frankly, people go wild about the perfect way to apply paste but for 98% of users it doesn't matter as long as there's enough coverage between the IHS/CPU and heatsink.
Thanks gray , much appreciated , I will do that most likely .

What is IHS ?

Have another question , and may be something that will cost me more , my lad wants to use
I’ve always done a pea size bit of paste in the middle. Never bothered spreading.

I place the mobo on its box and build as much as possible before it goes into the case

So
CPU
Storage
Ram
Cooler

Into the case
PSU and some of the wiring
Gpu
Finish off wiring
cheers Ben

Been thinking today ,

1. Is there a best monitor cable to connect to card ? As have not opened card yet , as waiting on ram arriving this afternoon !

2. My lad wants to use his ps 5 controller on his rig , is this best just don’t with a usb connection , or do I need a usb Bluetooth dongle ?

3 . Getting a bit nervous now :-/ one delivery away

4 does the PS come with a kettle lead , as again not opened it either , but if it does not is there a best one to buy

Thank you in advance

Display port

Use a wired connection as some games don’t support the ps5 controller wirelessly

PSU will come with the kettle lead

Cheers Ben , thanks for the answer ,

We are beginning the build this evening as ram just arrived , and a thought crossed my mind , is there any restrictions on types of screw drivers I should not use , ie magnetic type ?

magnetic screwdriver is fine, never done me any harm anyway, only helped
don't worry, just enjoy doing the build with your Son, it's a lovely evening for it,
make sure you don't put too many motherboard standoffs into the case, only what you need. line up the motherboard with the holes in the case to make sure you are putting them in the correct place, or some cases have it written on there where to put standoffs for different sized motherboards
You'll be fine!

You will be fine with a magnetic screwdriver. In fact i would recommend using one as it makes getting the screws into the holes easier and if you drop a screw you can retreive it with the screwdriver (make sure you don't scratch anything though).

Thanks pal , thought it was worth an ask, as memory ain’t what it used to be ;)

Also one other thing is , if anyone has any experience of the phantom spirit cooler , do they know which way the fans should be orientated , looked online but a common question not seen an answer ? Ie which way logos go , and should I utilise sync with y cables ,

The open side of both the fans (logo side) should face towards the front of the case.
There should be a arrow on the frame to show the direction of air flow.

Use the splitter cable and plug it into CPU fan header.

Well got the easy stuff done , the boys interest Wained after an hour of helping ,

So got the ssd, ram , cpu , ps , mounting for the cooler , and mb popped in, nearly crapped a brick when I clocked all the cables from the case , and the plethora of cables with ps …

I explained to my now impatient son , I may need to take a little longer tomorrow .

Definitely more cables than I recall ever having to deal with … ho hum

You'll get there mate, slow and steady wins the race.

The PSU cables should be quite well labelled, although first seeing them can I suspect be a tad overwhelming.

take as long as you need dude, it's not like you are a pro , £50, per session builder
you're starting at the beginning again, and you are doing really well,
our kids don't appreciate what lengths we go for them until they are older, little tw@ts that they are!
my dad did buy me my first computer though ( acorn electron,) then a C64, and then an amiga, so from the other end, I did really appreciate him for this
you're a cracking dad, and we all see that!
soon, this will all just be a happy memory, for your boy too,
so, if you see this, step outside and take a good deep breath of the air, and give yourself a pat on the back, you've got this : D

Well could not sleep last night , so got up at four am , read the manuals , got most of the case connectors done , front panel header a bit fiddly and look like both power button and reset link to grnd pin as we’re both doubles , but listed in manual as single , is that right .

Also notes that of the aero cool mini , the smart hub had both , addressable rgb 3 pin and standard RGb 4 pin , assume the latter is just left unconnected , as went into the argb header 3 (there was a 1 and 2 ) as this was neater for the run ? Will that be ok, or should I have went to 1 ?

Another thing from the case smart hub was a dimm type sata cable , can’t see anything about that on the literature with the case ? Nor in the asrock book? Should this be connected ?

So now just got to put in , the graphics card and the cooler and then run power , I think I’m getting there now ?

Does this sound ok thus far ?

Came back a bit early today , to push on a bit , and now a little confused how the Zotac 4070 connects to the psu , it comes with a power cable that splits into two 8 pins , but nothing in the psu bundle that seems to fit right

What PSU did you go for?

The 40 series has a different connecter to previous GPUs, where has before they used 2 x 8 pins or more the new ones have 1 connecter.

Have you checked the gpu box for an adaptor? my 4070Ti came with 1 that allowed me to convert 2 x 8 pin in to 1 x 40 series connecter

Most modern ATX3/PCIE5 PSUs do not need that adapter, but the adapter is plugged into the PSU's PCIE 8 pins and the other end (the 12/16 pin) is plugged into your graphics card.

Got the tug gaming 850w gold ,

Worked it out the was a 2x6+2 x 2 connector which worked looks the 2 x2 were the grnd s .

I have figured this out thanks all, .

Another question , sorry…

The riptide b650mpg board has both a cpu power pick up and a large atx power connector pick up back to psu , would I need both of these connected ! Can’t seem to find this out in literature ?
