Newcastle takeover???

I think the fact that the PL haven’t came straight out to condemn Saudi Arabia’s actions and defend its main media partner in the MENA region speaks volumes, almost as if they were expecting it.

Why do you think that?
Since it is a strict Islamic country, Saudi Arbaia has strict anti-gambling laws. [1] There are no state-licensed casinos, racetracks, bookmakers, or poker rooms. In fact, all forms of gambling are illegal in the Saudi Kingdom. The Koran makes a specific mention of the evils of gambling, but Mohammed made an exception for betting on horse racing.

there must be loads of gambling adds in football though and they are going to air it legally now?

so does it really make a difference

I find it hard to believe that the PIF would want a gambling company(illegal in Saudi) as its teams main sponsor when it has so many other it can choose from. It’s the wording of the announcement that’s the worry, “signed a long term deal”
Of course what you do is Sponsor them yourself with Aramco or some other state owned entity but pay massively over the odds as a way to funnel cash into the club to try and appease UEFA and not fall foul of FFP, but recent court Shenanigans have shown UEFA to have no real teeth.

I think I will be Hilarious if the premier league annoy the Saudis enough through bending over backwards to Qatar/BeIN for them to pull out and then Qatar/BeIN head guy gets found guilty of Corruption/bribery which would then make the BeIN deal untenable

surely if that was the case they would have asked the potential buyer if inheriting the sponsor was a problem for them.

so either the deal is dead but no one wants to announce it or it doesn't matter

ATM I leaning towards the first one
yea probably most likely with it taking so long, it's almost like the people in charge of approving the deal are waiting for the saudis to pull out...

Not a football fan my self although I do enjoy a bit of football manager on the pc :D, just never watch the actual game in the real world.

would have been nice to see Newcastle United get some investment though since the ground is almost on my doorstep I pay a tiny bit of interest to what's going on.

I don't think this deal means as much as you guys think. As part of Newcastle's agreement with Puma there would be a deadline for the club to confirm shirt and sleeve sponsors each summer, to give Puma time to manufacture the new kit so it's ready to go on sale before next season kicks off.

As for the fact that it's a betting company and Saudi laws regarding gambling, first of all the UAE have the same laws and that hasn't stopped City signing a sleeve sponsorship deal with Marathon bet. Secondly Newcastle cannot make decisions on the assumption the deal goes through. It's been widely reported that for all but the biggest clubs, the difference in value of their shirt sponsorship with a betting company and non betting company is massive. As above, Newcastle had to agree a new shirt sponsor and it would be mad for them to sign up with a non gambling company that would pay them 50% of the value of this deal - what if the takeover subsequently gets blocked?

Good points there @BaZ87, always rely on you to bring a little sense to the conversation :p:p:p

I definitely feel like the Premier league are taking the **** with this now burying their head in the sand hoping it will go away, if masters can’t make a decision be it yes or no, then he shouldn’t be in the job

Its not a normal takeover in fairness. On top of that you have a global pandemic so its understandable its delayed.

What I expect to read as a statement sometime next week
Deal rejected by masters saying "its big and complicated with still so much more to work on, we felt it wouldn't be fair to the fans of nufc and the club itself to drag this in to the transfer window and impact preparations for the start of 20/21 season."

Ashley won't put a penny in during the off season. They could be in trouble next season unless the deal goes through.
