*** Nexus 5 THE Official Thread ***

gonna pick one of these up today, at £240 it's a bargain. I've got a Note 3 but want to give this a try and see how it compares. Anyone gone from a Note 3 to N5?

I have both in my house, there really too different takes on the smartphone.

Nexus: better software, smaller which is a plus for me, I like the soft touch feel more then the faux leather. And no faux metal around the sides, hate that ****.

Note3: better battery, camera, and I like aolmed more then LCD panels so better screen.

Performance wise it is pretty even, the Nexus too me feels slightly faster and zipper when navigating around the OS, and due to the size I would rather use it then the Note 3.

Yeah hard to compare the note3 is in no mans land compared to a phone. I agree with fallen above. I would say the OS and look and feel is better on the N5. Clearly the note offers many other perks.

Sorted out rooting my nexus, finally got it to recognise by making the USB mode a camera, seemed a bit bizarre! Managed to load the module 'maximise widgets' seems a small thing but I really like it.

Only problem is now my bank of Scotland app doesn't run because the device is rooted, should have realised something like that would happen!

Yeah can't see the point in rooting anymore tbh. More hassle and drawbacks than it's worth.

Agreed. I can understand why you would with other phones but for me I just the Google experience. Miss root for adblocking but more hassle than its work with sjy go and Barclays apps

other than sky go it has zero downsides for me.

i have left mine stock, but i use a custom kernel, a custom colour profile and titanium backup as well as a special version of cerberus.

i can watch sky go on my nexus 7 (2013) anyway and it's better for that as well since it's a big screen.

What do you actually need Titanium Backup for nowadays? All my contacts and apps are synced with Google and my photos with Dropbox. What else is there to backup?

For me its proper backups with titanium backup pro, I like to still change a few things e.g. battery text icon, restart in power menu, volume controls, and a few other things. It doesn't have many drawbacks, the only thing for me is I can't use a banking app. It also means I get a lot more flexibility.

Google doesn't have a good backup offering, it is really either Titanium or Carbon and Titanium just works and can backup to the cloud and so on.

I had my new N5 (just bought) for about an hour or so before I decided to unlock, root, install a custom kernel (along with a custom colour profile) and then finally install the exposed framework with the gravity box module.

All the above is running on top of the stock ROM and the screen, to me, looks better than it did at stock and the small, but pleasing, customisations made from using gravity box has really impressed me. At one time I would have needed a custom ROM to give me what gravity box offers.

I use Titanium backup pro (I used to use it to convert a user app to a system one, but I had to do other things since KK) and it has been great to restore the user data etc, rather than just the app itself, and, mostly in the past, I have used it to remove or freeze certain system apps etc. As it was bought a long time ago I have certainly had vfm from my purchase.

i understand that, but for me everything i want is backed up on google, contacts, emails and wifi passwords.

App data is the only thing I need, I play a lot of games, and I don't wanna lose that, and just having things install again without need any setup is great for me. But it is mostly just the games, if Android had better backs ups I could live without root.

Got the N5 now, first impressions are good so far, it's just as smooth & fast as the Note 3. If I'm satisfied with the battery I might consider this as a daily use phone, though I'm guessing rooting and flashing a kernel will improve battery life quite a bit?

franco kernel will definitely improve battery life as well as performance.

his app lets you tweak colour profiles as well and there is an AMOLED profile if you prefer the note 3 screen type.

i'll stick to true RGB v4.1 though, AMOLED is too saturated for me.
