*** Nintendo Switch ***

Is it just me or are some switch games ridiculous in price. I'm currently bidding on a fire emblem and xenblade 2 games. Brand new they seem to be rivaling ps5 game money:eek:.

Its been like that for many Nintendo games, not exclusivity to the Switch but Nintendo games have an history of holding their value.

What's also crazy, some Switch games are limited run. For example, look at the price for Hades on the Switch compared to the other platforms. Or try to find a decent price for Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country. Its weird some of these Switch titles just end up out of print or limited release.

Anywhere has stock of Switch Neon OLED in a decent bundle? Looking to buy my first Switch.
Can you mention other shops on here? if so (hope im not breaking the rules) currys did have some in stock with bundles a while ago, its where i got mine :)

I think the rules are you can mention competitors so long as the product isn't sold by OcUK. But I did see them, looked to have some pretty decent looking bundles on there. However, looks can be deceiving and while they all looked to be in stock, at checkout pretty much all Neon based OLED's are out of stock for home delivery.

I did end up picking one up though, not the Neon but I decided to just go for the White console, otherwise I might be waiting some time for stock. I got a bundle which included a memory card, Mario Kart 8, MineCraft and Animal Crossing. Then got the Pokemon Legends: Arceus and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD bundle.

Should all be arriving tomorrow.

Nice one, was only neon in stock when i got mine a little while ago, mk8 and animal crossing are great games, i still love having a few races on mk8, im still to buy arceus but its defo on my to buy list, skyward sword is a great game if you can get used to the controls
unfortunately i couldnt so sold it on after playing for a few hrs, just couldnt nail the combat with the stick and hate using motion controls.

Ive got zelda breath of the wild which i have only played for around 5hrs so far, seems good from what ive played and the combat etc is great.

Enjoy your new switch when it arrives :)

Almost had a panic moment. Me and partner was playing Mario Kart 8, bedtime comes and I realise one of the joycons is stuck to the hand strap, seems I put them on the wrong way. So it seemed well and fairly stuck and I was worried I'd already messed things up, luckily a Google search helped give me an answer and after a little trying was finally able to get it free.

I've only played Mario so far as it's been such fun. I'll try the others tomorrow.

From first thoughts, I love the system, the way it can easily go from big screen to on the go screen, the joycons which usually form one joypad splitting up to make two controllers. My only real issue is the slot for inserting games, I wish they would have used a push down to open system as for someone like myself who doesn't have the nails to be able to open the tab, it's pretty annoying.

Question though, am I better of reattaching the joycons to the dock after usage is had for the day or is keeping it on the controller attachment better? Just don't want to over charge the joycons and them to get damaged if that's even a thing.

Can you charge joycon while using screen docked? I just thought of the scenario in which you've gamed for some time and the joycons are dying, but you can't game because you can't charge and play at same time?

You can buy additional grips which support USB-C charging. Nintendo have an official, rather overpriced one, or there's cheaper third parties which do the job just as well.

Slightly criminal of Nintendo to not include it in the supplied grip, but thats Nintendo for you...

Great thanks, I'll have a look to see what's available.

The price of games though, especially first party games that have been out over a year and still cost full price . Is this the normal or do deals come up for these games, if so where is best to look / compare price of various stores?

The good news is that you can resell them for the date price.

Good to hear you are enjoying the switch, awesome little handheld/console isnt it, i just keep the joycons connected to the switch all the time, when im playing docked i use the pro controller which is probably the best joy pad ive owned, its great quality and battery lasts forever.

Managed to find some sales in argos from time to time so always worth checking there, much better prices than game etc, oh buy said pro controller, its probably the best buy ive had for the switch, makes a world of difference when playing docked :)

Mk8 is great fun init, i always play online and can hold my own most the time, dont know many of the shortcuts either besides the obvious ones, splatoon 2 is also amazing fun but the 3rd in the series is coming this year so may be worth waiting for that.

So the one thing I've noticed today after starting to play Pokemon Legends: Arceus, is the graphical quality between docked and undocked. I game on a 27" 1080p monitor while docked and the OLED Switch performs considerably better undocked for me. Especially on Arceus where while docked I can see the pixels of the characters more clearly and the camera movement has an element of blur to it, I've managed to reduce this a bit by messing around with settings but while undocked it doesn't seem to be an issue. So might just be because I don't have a high end TV / Monitor to play on. This doesn't take anything away from the games mind and playing docked still looks great, just undocked looks and feels better. Also I don't seem to have the same pixel / camera blur issues with Mario Kart 8, that just looks and plays awesome while docked.

Are these games designed for undocked and upscaled for docked?

I tried online for the first time on MK8 and actually won a race! :D

Interestingly the games are supposed to run better docked; I believe the GPU is underclocked when undocked to reduce heat build up (screen also generates heat) and increase battery life.

I found performance for some games (Xenoblade Chronicles 2 probably the most prominent example) was notably better docked, so perhaps a monitor issue? Or of course it could just be pixels per inch resulting in more aliasing.

All games ive tried look better docked on my 4k tv, they run at 1080p docked mostly and 720p undocked if i remember right, i do love the oled screen though and games do look very nice playing on it, much better than the standard switch for me

Yeah I think I may have been blindsided by Pokemon as it's the first game where it becomes graphically noticeable. After double checking, the blur in camera movement is still present on the OLED, so more than likely just a case of messing with monitors colours. Also doesn't help my monitor or TV aren't OLED and don't support HDR or 4k.

I'm finding the vibration feeling a little strange, like if your phone was vibrating on a table, but could be because it definitely feels different to what I used from the PS4 controller or Xbox controller.

Also bought Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - Gold Edition digitally on the eStore for just £16.49! Cheaper than buying the game as a physical copy.

Anyway anyone want to be friends? SW-0680-6510-2826, feel free to add me!

Is your monitor an ‘odd’ resolution?

The switch outputs at 1080p so if it’s a 1440p monitor it will look a bit smeared as I expect the scaler will be rudimentary. It will certainly look better if you play with black boarders.

4k is just a doubling of 1080p in both directions so you’ll not get that smearing.

@Spacedeck
If I remember some of the technical reviews I watched, it may be to do with the fact that undocked, it sounds like Arceus runs at pretty much a locked, native 720p screen resolution, with a pretty much locked 30FPS, whereas when docked, it does not run at fixed resolution and instead varies between around 800-1080p, and employs some dynamic resolution switching to maintain framerate as well as having a slightly less stable framerate (although still reasonable).

It could be you're noticing that variable resolution scaling all the more because the game is being blown up to 27" at 1080p, which, if you're sitting relatively close (as most people do with a monitor as opposed to a TV) can already look pretty rough if you're used to higher DPI; I'd imagine that combination of size, likely seating distance, and the dynamic resolution scaling is really not helping, when all blurred together.

Pokemon Arceus has some great design and art design, but is a bit lackluster technically; worth it though, best Pokemon game in years; although I'm definately going to replay Let's Go soon for some Gen 1 nostalgia.

Honestly though I do love the portability and flexibility of the Switch, and if Nintendo don't go back to the hardware power race, I really do hope they stick with this hybrid approach, but just ramp the power of each machine up substantially so it can still handle ports from other contemporary systems and doesn't begin to inhibit game design etc.

There is zero probability of them chasing the sub optimal strategy of chasing top performance.
