*** Nintendo Switch ***

@Spacedeck
If I remember some of the technical reviews I watched, it may be to do with the fact that undocked, it sounds like Arceus runs at pretty much a locked, native 720p screen resolution, with a pretty much locked 30FPS, whereas when docked, it does not run at fixed resolution and instead varies between around 800-1080p, and employs some dynamic resolution switching to maintain framerate as well as having a slightly less stable framerate (although still reasonable).

It could be you're noticing that variable resolution scaling all the more because the game is being blown up to 27" at 1080p, which, if you're sitting relatively close (as most people do with a monitor as opposed to a TV) can already look pretty rough if you're used to higher DPI; I'd imagine that combination of size, likely seating distance, and the dynamic resolution scaling is really not helping, when all blurred together.

Pokemon Arceus has some great design and art design, but is a bit lackluster technically; worth it though, best Pokemon game in years; although I'm definately going to replay Let's Go soon for some Gen 1 nostalgia.

Honestly though I do love the portability and flexibility of the Switch, and if Nintendo don't go back to the hardware power race, I really do hope they stick with this hybrid approach, but just ramp the power of each machine up substantially so it can still handle ports from other contemporary systems and doesn't begin to inhibit game design etc.

There is zero probability of them chasing the sub optimal strategy of chasing top performance.

It's probably just a combinations of what Alexrose1uk mentioned. Doesn't take anything away from the game anyway.

Can anyone recommend two player games? They'd need to be played via one set of joycons split between us, same way it works in Mario Kart 8. Preferably either exclusives or first party games.

Have you thought about buying a second unofficial controller from amazon? Got mine for about £8

I'm willing to buy another if I need to, just wondered what other games split the joycon up to allow two players? or do most of them require a set of full joycons?

Although the switch has less power available running off battery, the settings are always tweaked. Think of it like low & medium settings on a PC game.
Usually, the docked version has both better resolution & better performance. But occasionally, the exact settings & cutbacks chosen for the portable mode can result in better performance with poorer graphics quality.
Of course, the small screen always does the graphics a lot of favours & the bigger your TV, the more flaws you can spot in docked mode. So there may be the odd title where it 'feels' better overall in portable mode.

True, they won't get back into the main console arms race.
But just because a certain graphical power is good enough for 2017, doesn't mean it's good enough for 2022. They can afford to be a certain amount behind the cutting edge, but not infinitely behind.
IMO, this was exactly the mistake they made with the wii, they thought that just because dropping out of the graphics race had worked for them, that they could afford to stagnate for 7 years after that launch, graphically. They left it way too late to upgrade the wii, I think.
My hunch is that the OLED switch was orignally supposed to be the switch pro, until they realised they couldn't possibly get the silicone in useful numbers & just released an upgrade with what they could get - the upgraded screen.
I like my switch a lot & I'll keep playing even if it doesn't get an upgrade, but I'd like one ASAP & I'll buy it at launch unless it's a silly price.

So getting a Switch has been a bit of a venture. I have Pro controller and Mario Superstars coming today from Argos. Am I right in thinking that I can use pro controller + the 2 joycons to have 3 players?

Snipper clips.

That is a very good suggestion! We tried the demo and loved it. I'll look to pick up the full game at some point in the near future.

Pro controller is worth every penny imo, very well made and battery life lasts a very long time, awesome stuff

Having a PS5 makes me much more appreciative of the Switch pro controller. I get about 8 hours out of the PS5 controller.

For those put off by the price of the pro controller, I can recommend this £20 alternative, which I've posted in the thread a few times, but in case anyone missed it.

I've not tried a real pro controller, so can't say how it stacks up to that, but I've generally been used to official xbox controllers, and this one is fine in comparison to those.

Yeah ive heard the ps5 controller runs out quick, supposed to be amazing with the feedback and adaptive triggers though, ive never in my life known a controller to last as long as the pro controller though, it literally lasts days!

Made very well and solid also, i wouldnt be without it now and like i say, its worth every penny :)

What screen protectors you all using? I've looked at Orzly and AmFilm, which both seem popular. Although some reports / pictures in reviews seem to suggest it doesn't cover the entire screen. Anyone found one that does?

They will all leave a few mm at the edges, if they are made of glass. Any that don’t will peel away quickly.

Get the Orzly.

Havent bothered with a screen protector on mine, i take care of things though lol

I do too, but having had my daughter drop my Vita for a few times (luckily never damaged screen, just cosmetic to the body), I didn't want to chance it. Unless my set up a huge protective bubble around everything I own, between my two girls, there's a chance of something happening :p. My application wasn't perfect but it covers the area visible in games and looks fine.

Unfortunately the screen is plastic so you will get scratches on it just from putting it in the dock or putting it in a case.

You will have scratches but you just haven't noticed.
So far cant see a single scratch on the screen (touch wood) while examining with screen off :)
