*** Nintendo Switch ***

as someone who loved nintendo (nes, snes, n64) they haven't really made a decent console since. The wii was ok, but I was never as much of a fan as I was with the original three. Tried the wii u for six months and ended up selling it, as I did with the gamecube.

Please stop with the "we're trying to offer something different" and release a normal console with decent specs and decent games. No frills, just a games console (and no mii characters!!).

I know it's hard to topple ps4 and xbox but a gpu able to do 1440p 60fps with pixel upscaling to 4k along with a massive hdd should be doable in 2017 for £400, slap on mario, mario kart, zelda, donkey kong and you've hit a home run. I'd go one further and say don't even spend time on a UI for the operating system. Just have a nintendo logo saying load game and be done with it. Dedicate as much resources to the games as possible.

I've pre-ordered one though lol but what's going to happen if this is another flop?

You answered your own rant with "I know it's hard to topple ps4 and xbox". So why bother?

TBF they have, they've had one console that hasn't worked out so well. The Wii had plenty of games.

I still remember the loooooooooooooong Wii game droughts. Although I will admit my opinion of the Wii is tainted by how rubbish everything looked compared to the competition. Having revisited my fave Wii games on Dolphin - which they look genuinely stunning on, even compared to current gen standards - it reinforces how much they were gimped by the chosen hardware. But yeah, you're right, it was a decent first party line up on the Wii. The console was arguably worth it just for the Galaxy games.

I wonder what % of people bought the Wii component cable making it 480p? It looked so much better with it.

Not sure. It was better, but not that much better. 480p is 480p. I ended up getting an old CRT for the Wii and that did make a big difference - was just weird having to make space for a tiny, ancient, fish bowl tv to experience games at their best.

It's just that I didn't meet a single person that bothered or even knew about the component cable difference. Yes it was 480p but this was 2006. It made a big difference in my eyes.

Speaking of which, I wonder if it would be possible to downgrade the Switch in handheld mode to 480p? Possible battery boost which with some games probably wouldn't be that noticeable.

While I agree that most buying it will already have a Xbox/PS4, not quite sure about it not having third party support when we've seen who is developing for it and the schedule of releases throughout the year clearly showing the Switch will get third party support.

I should have proof read what i wrote as i didn't mean to imply 3rd party support would be bad for the Switch. Its too early in the day to tell how that will play out in the long term and I was only thinking of its last 2 home consoles(Wii/Wii U) and how they didn't get the AAA 3rd party games that other platforms did. I really only posted to emphasize that a lot of gamers will have interest in Nintendo consoles despite primarily gaming on other platforms hence the thread will have a lot of differing opinions.

It definitely should have been bundled with the console. Nintendo lost a great deal of core gamer support with the Wii as a direct result of how the games looked. Which is a shame as the art direction of first party games is nearly always spot on.

I keep flip flopping between leaving the pre-order on and cancelling it. At this point, I'd be paying £300 more than I perhaps should to play Zelda.

I can sort of stomach the £280 cost, though the placeholders for games and accessories really feels OTT to me. Feel a bit like being taken for a mug. Always have Nintendo consoles on launch, but this perhaps is the wrong time and value for me.

I've said it lots, but our Wii U gets a hammering. It's been brilliant. There's not going to be anything beyond Zelda, but nothing stops me playing Smash or MK8. I don't see how I'll get value from the re-hashed games. Splatoon 2 isn't launch is it? Is Zelda much improved from Wii U to Switch? Mario is 'Holiday 2017' - I'd almost bet on slippage. Do I want to pay for another online service? I genuinely don't think I can afford another set of joy-cons. Will it ever truly be used as a hand-held?

All of these things scream 'cancel' to me, but the fanboy is stopping me at present. £60 for a game is disgusting to me. Can't do that - that's a couple of nights camping for the family.

I want to love it, but I can't.

I'm curious as to how many regular posters in this thread are going to buy the console. Hmmmm

I pre-ordered the standard grey one. Also ordered Breath of the Wild Limited Edition + T-shirt from Nintendo online.

I'm a gamer, so I don't bother with the tech specs. I get what I think will be fun, and stress release. Also, what will be great for my little daughter and girlfriend get togethers. May even get their own switches down the line, for local LAN mutliplay.

People can argue all day about specs, price or whatever. I just keep remembering why I started gaming in the first place on an Atari VCS 2600. For fun!

I do have a PC and PS4 for other more hardcore gaming.

So you lot carry on arguing about tit-for-tat, whilst I just enjoy the fun. Life is too short.

Does anyone think that the Sega dreamcast was a better console then any of the past 3 consoles Nintendo have released?

The dreamcast had the specs to boost playing high graphical games whilst having that innovative touch to the console as Nintendo has on there's

£50 from Argos, if that helps at all :p

I had a real soft spot for the dreamcast. The poster above hit the nail on the head. What makes a good console great is measured by the amount of fun you have playing it.

Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Bass Fishing

Ha my main memory of the dreamcast is a friend of mine racking up a phone bill in the hundreds playing dial up cho cho rocket. Hey he had fun doing it though.

Fun isn't really the issue with the switch though. It's the price and lack of games at launch most seem to have an issue with.

I liked the Dreamcast a lot, I wonder if we will ever see another Sega console.

But youre both right, the switch will be fun, regardless of specs and AAA titles.

The Dreamcast was an amazing console! The public choosing the Playstation over it (philistines every one of them!), imho, was a pivotal moment in gaming. They chose more grounded, accessible games over old skool, abstract arcade. And of course, all the developers paid attention.

The problem with the dreamcast wasn't the dreamcast, it was segas poor management decisions. They fell out with EA Sports, ran a poor marketing campaign, bet on online gaming but being 2-3 years too early and had a shocking controller.

Did anyone with a dreamcast use the 56k modem? I don't know anyone who did.

Customers rightly or wrongly went to Sony, despite the dreamcast being a fantastic console with amazing games.

Yep, but unfortunately Sega left it too late with the Dreamcast. Hope Nintendo hardware doesn't go the way of the Do Do too.

I have kept my pre-order though for now.
