*** Nintendo Switch ***

Come on now, you don't have to gush about everything Nintendo do.

:p

I don't, I think the accessories are way too expensive for example! :p

But I am just looking at it from a different perspective rather than jumping on a bandwagon.

If the switch is handling voice chat, lobby management and everything else the phone app is doing, this is going to reduce battery time.

One way of removing this issue is handing it off to a smart app. And let's face it...EVERYONE has a smart phone or tablet these days.

I think it would be better however if it only needed the smart app when undocked/off charge.

I agree. The answer quoted is BS sales stuff. I'm just looking at it from a different angle :)

The app is going to be significantly less convenient than having an in game UI. Surely it won't be required for random matchmaking though right?, that would make no sense.

Here's how I think it will work:

Option in game to 'join online match', then choose
  • "Anyone"
  • "Join with Friends" (this requires you have a party set up on your phone)

I guess they're doing it this way to save resources for games on the Switch, and while considering the Switch won't have mobile data(e.g. 4G).

I expected at least 30+ given the price. Hopefully there's more but not sure I'm interested anyway, at least not at release.

lol that phone app..... haha it has to be a purchased app!! That's the only possible reason for it being separate!!

1-2 switch looks miserable.

Reggie is basically saying "we're too incompetent to code a decent online system so we're farming it off to DeNa who only have smartphone experience, so it will all be handled via an app."

The Vita had competent online services so don't give me any excuses regarding battery life.

The fact we have to pay for that crap is even worse.

The app is free but come fall there won't be much use for it without an online subscription (something required on other consoles, too).

Other consoles have to reserve a significant amount of RAM for the OS, so this is in part a way to keep all resources available for games.

I'm thinking the Switch won't have much multi-tasking capability, if any.

Who said the app costs? I'm assuming the use of matchmaking and stuff will be tied into the 'service cost' but I doubt they'll charge for the app as well.

It doesn't have a browser or media apps so yeah I'm guessing they went the OS to be barebones and light since they only nave 4GB RAM.

But why would match making and voice chat require much ram or processing if done right? Just seems strange..

If I will be required to mess about with my mobile every time I want to play mario kart online, I will definitely not bother with MK8D. As if it was not bad enough that it is over priced as it is.

Nintendo really know how to mess things up lately. They should have just waited until the fall and gone with new tegra, would not have needed to mess about needing a mobile phone for basic features. There would have also been a better selection of games on release and furthermore Zelda could have easily been able to do 1080p docked.

As much as I cannot wait to get my hands on the Switch and Zelda, I do get annoyed by the number silly decisions Nintendo keep making. A lot of people went from being uber excited before the Nintendo event to being disappointed. This is bad because less sales means less games which means eventual fail.

This whole smartphone app for online features is genuinely one of the most retarded things I've ever heard.

What are Nintendo doing. So, you will need to use your phone for voice chat and multiplayer game matchmaking/initiation. There's no excuse for not baking this in to the OS of the switch, this is laziness and a stupid decision.

A different perspective. It saves battery on the Switch when on the move.

Ah, please.

Totally agree. They missed a Christmas 2016 launch, so why not wait until fall. It would have been beneficial to all. We haven't had the specs confirmed, but we all know it's not going to contain the new Tegra. For a console which has been in the pipeline for years, there seems a real sense of lack of planning and foresight.

So when travelling i need kill my battery on my smart phone?? And what happens if i get a phone call during a game??

Nintendo really don't know how to do online do they? Even when MS sorted it 14 years ago lol

I also wouldn't be surprised if this is how nintendo will charge for their online service with in app purchases. Would mean no discount codes etc
