*** Nintendo Switch ***

Sounds good I will be up for that I'm not the best player but enjoy mario kart, I wonder how the connection will hold up seeing that the switch uses wifi.

In that case I look forward to our OCUK duels where most of us are just going around the first corner when you lap us whilst being halfway submerged through the floor or whatever exploit you're aware of :p

Looks like they haven't removed all of the speed boosting techniques in MK8D ;)

I've never played any of the MK's with OcUK but I remember reading about Kreeeee and his little exploits :p

The first ds mario Kart was the best as it was the first online one.

So many little hearts were broken when people realised that beating their mates didn't make them any good, and that there were so many shortcuts and advanced techniques they were ignorant to.

lol!! Is this the 'snaking' exploit thing? Never played it in the DS.

Nothing wrong with learning how to use exploits, or being good at them in any game, but racing against 'friends' and using an exploit to win, when not everyone was doing it, would be kinda lame. It would be like me jumping through the walls in MK64 when nobody else knew how to do it and lapping everyone... my friends would just think I was a bell.

When it came to that rainbow road jump in MK64 though the house rules were whoever was in first place had to go for it regardless of how good they were... for the lols :D or did we all have to go for it? Who knows!

There are advanced techniques in every Mario Kart.

The snaking 'exploit' everyone was crying about was in the manual for some of the games.

It seems the new mode where you don't even have to steer is ideal for some people. Just let the items be the only deciding factor.

When you play online you play by the official limits of the game. I've never understood the desire to dumb the game down to a game of chance, not that I'm aiming any of this at you.

I think the best way to avoid people being disgruntled would be to decide whether certain controversial tactics were allowed before you play - that way nobody could complain.

I think a lot of the fun of Mario Kart comes from the element of chance. It is very annoying when you get hooned by a set of unavaoidable weapons in a row, particularly by the computer with blue shells. But over a few rounds the better players always end up with the most points. And when you're hit by another human player (not the computer - that IS annoying) I've probably found it funnier more often than annoying, on balance.

From a video I've seen they've removed the benefit of that firehopping. You can still do it but it doesn't increase the boost for the duration of each hop like it used to. Is that not the case?

Well I've cracked, I ordered a Switch Friday night and after a right faff with Yodel it arrived Sunday. Only managed 1 hour of Zelda after all the setting up but I have to say I'm really impressed so far, I've only done 2 shrines but was a bit concerned initially that the game may chuck you in the deep end but think it's leading you in at a nice pace.

That will do me for a while, may get Mario Kart next week.

You decide to play by the full official rules of the game when you play online so that's an easy decision to make.

It depends on what you find fun. For me winning by luck is hollow and I don't get anything out of it, and luckily every single Mario Kart has intentional techniques (such as snaking) added to make sure that skill still has an impact. This impact is very low in MK8D compared to most other Mario Karts though so victories are pretty meaningless in comparison.

Luckily they haven't removed all of the advanced techniques though so there is still some element of skill left.

I'm with Kreeeee on this, I believe anything goes online and using these techniques is a lot more skillful and therefore should be rewarded. I will try and learn how to take advantage of this in the new one.

I'd like to see an online mode with no weapons/powerups. Would be interesting for competitive racing if you can call it that when you are a dinosaur riding a kart. It might be crap though.

Have been putting Switch to the back of my mind for a while, there isn't the games selection yet IMO buuuut, just found out I'm owed about £400 from work I wasn't expected. Jump in now or wait until there's more games/hardware revision?

You'll be waiting at least a year for a hardware revision I'd imagine. I also can't see the price of the Switch dropping in price by much in that same period of time; it is Nintendo after all :D.

I'd say jump in if the games are appealing to you.

All depends on how you feel about the games that are out/coming out in the near future. I love Zelda games and could get into a good Mario Kart, I'm travelling for 3 weeks next week so decided I needed something to do for the times when I'm not busy. Despite being the tender age of 31 I can't go away without gaming.

So I couldn't wait for a Binding of Isaac release so I created another US account, bought some eshop codes off Play-Asia, redeemed codes and downloaded it. Worked out at £31.64 which was a bit more than I wanted to pay for it but I am flying in the morning and I wanted to have it for the journey. Happy!
