*** Nintendo Switch ***

Trying to find one now, not going into an Argos though, not had my injections.

I can get the blue/red one for Saturday via Amazon...but I don't want that one as I am not 12 :(

I was very sceptical of the neon blue/red edition when I ordered but as it was the only one I could get I went with it and I’m glad I did, looks a lot better than the grey joy cons imo.

I used to play the OCUK MarioKart8 tournaments a while back which were great but didn't really take off as not many peeps had Wii U,s maybe the popularity of the Switch will bring that back ? Hope so :)
I've put hundreds of hours into the online mode, bought all the dlc and lots of amiibo for the extra unlockable bits and I'm not one bit disappointed of having to pay for the new deluxe edition on Switch as it looks super polished
Currently 94 on Metacritic :)

You must be a fire hopping monster if you played that much!

I read somewhere that 'fire hopping' or whatever had been taken out...

...all I want to do is disrupt the menu screen prior to splitscreen multiplayer action with:

OPTIONS!

OPTIONS!

DATA!

It's all I want. It never got old.

I no longer have any friends :(

well finally finished zelda earlier..
great game my only annoyances are:
1) felt a little lost at times
2) i know why they did it, but hated that weapons would break.

oh well got no more switch games until MK8D comes out

Resolution bump and battle mode.

+ a few more characters and karts, ability to hold 2 items simultaneously, and additional boost charge gain from drifting. There's also the drive assist thing for beginners/newbies, a couple of new items and some other general quality/UX improvements.

After 200 hours+ playing the original on WiiU I wasn't too excited about MK8D initially, but it's such a joy to play still and I have no problem spending more for the improved/expanded version.

Can't believe it's been 3 years now since it released on WiiU.

Guess I am just a gaming snob, but this sort of thing always makes me cringe. smartphones games are for the most part not 'portable gaming' but just timewasters in situations you are so bored you figure you may as well play some piece of garbage. As a gamer I feel unreasonably disgusted when someone references smartphones and 'gaming', I feel the urge to roll up a newspaper and tap someone on the head saying 'no!' like I would a dog that pee'd indoors

I feel the same. I'd rather do something a lot more productive on my smartphone like read up stuff (e.g. these very forums), use a language learning app or find out useful info (e.g. traffic info when travelling) and make better use of my time than waste it on some tat game.

So what is the view of the mighty OCUK.

Should I buy one of these to play some of the latest flavours of Nintendo's epic games?

Help me OCbiwanUK, you are my only hope.

I'm probably going to be the only one to say this, but I'd recommend waiting till later this year at the least. Like most new tech releases, the earliest batches of this new piece of hardware has it's teething issues and whatnot. People still have the Joycon issue and usually it involves sending your Joyconn to Nintendo for them to 'fix' it. Not to mention the situation with games isn't exactly the best right now. A port of a WiiU game and a remaster of another WiiU game are what's currently available, if you don't want to get shafted on the price of indie/digital games. Zelda is decent, but it's not as GOTY amazing as some people like to claim (I've played 190 hours of it and done everything in the game) and Mario Kart is best for playing local multi-player with folks or online.

It's probably better to buy towards the end of the year, by which time a lot more games will be out and there will likely be offers and bundles (surprisingly, this appears to be the first Nintendo system that hasn't had any bundles during launch period in a while), and hopefully by then, they'll have ironed out the small issues. Being an early adopter of tech usually gets people shafted these days.

I've pretty much bought all the new consoles when they arrived but I have to say the only ones that got proper play were my SNES, N64 and probably PS1. Outside of that it has really been things that I can say "yea, I've got one of those" but I don't really play them that much anymore. PC games I do and have done for decades but consoles, outside those above not really. I was hoping the new one with some of the refreshes of old games might see me us it more and having seen the Mario Kart noise I thought that looks good, might be worth a punt.

I'm not good at waiting, I might be missing out :) (I know I won't)

The only thing I would say regarding buying one, if you don't have a Wii U, is how much more would you play if you'd use handheld mode?

I play Zelda daily because I can. Though I had a Wii U, I felt like I was missing out on quality in handheld mode and I could barely go anywhere with it. The Switch can go to bed when I do, I can play stood in the kitchen when the dinner is cooking and it's been with me when I've sat waiting for my daughter at guides and parties. I've never really used handheld consoles before, despite owning many over the years. The Switch has got me because of the nature of it.

Zelda is no better for being on the Switch, but my ability to play it has vastly increased because there's no debate over who is using the TV, I don't have to get my gaming setup out (which I would for my PS4 to play SFV) and so on.

Games wise, mine is sparse. 1-2 Switch is good for the kids, who will play for ages until they're sweaty messes, but I've yet to commit to other ports irrespective of how good they are.

The last Nintendo I bought was the Wii back when that came out, I've not got a Wii U. I am not a huge gamer these days, but the ability to sit on a sofa for an hour and have a play does appeal, as does taking it with me on my business travels for those times when I am bored in a hotel room. I always liked the Mario platformers/kart games from the SNES and N64, Goldeneye of course was an epic and a few others over the years, like Metroid on the Game Cube thingy, Pilot Wings. These are probably the only games I played at length on a console, bar some shooting game on the Xbox some years back, due to Tax Evader on here getting me into it, that was ace. I just like shiny new stuff but have been good of late not wasting money on stuff I don't use, but the evil dark devil of shiny stuff is calling me with this one.

If you love Zelda or open world games, yes. Otherwise, now, what would you genuinely play?

My kids made the Wii U and the Switch worthwhile because they get a lot of use out of them on games I'm not fussed on. If it was just me, I might not have bought the Switch just for Zelda (and nearly didn't until Amazon did drop it for £46 for Prime members), but I'm glad I've got it now.

Go back to my post and you will see that I don't actually reference 'gaming on a smartphone'. People, such as myself, are very happy to browse the internet frustration free on our smartphones. I'm even posting on OCUK out and about now, wooo! 4G and nice big screens make this a relative treat compared to the days of old :)

I CBA to have a portable console for the once in a blue moon opportunity when I'm on a train or in a hotel by myself, noting that I can be easily entertained by my smartphone. When travelling with company it can be pretty antisocial to whip out a game... unless it's 'long haul' or you hate speaking to each other. It's pretty anti-social to be on your phone all the time too, but that tends to be 'less absorbing' than playing a game.

You are right, I saw the phrase 'portable gaming being killed by smartphones' and I think the word gaming and smartphone in the same sentence sent shivers down my spine. But it is a fair point that the distraction of internet browsing can be enough to keep people from feeling the need to game. Though for me personally, I recently realized (when I temporarily had no books to read on my Kindle) that I would be scrounging for any old crap to browse on my phone just to help pass time rather than actually be interested in looking at something (obviously this is not the case for everyone, but for me I have plenty of opportunity to browse the internet at a desktop, so have no actual need to do so 'on the go'). So I really would have appreciated having a portable gaming system.

While it would be antisocial to whip out a game in company for a trip, I think the strength of the Switch (and Nintendo in general) is its local multiplayer. Pulling out Mariokart for you and your mates to play during a trip would be a lot of fun, no doubt same goes for the Tetris and Splatoon and even Bomberman - obviously it depends on your company, but this would end up far more fun and social than 2 or 3 friends all staring at their phones (I hate how people seem to find their smartphones irresistible to check on even during conversations).

I don't actually own a Switch, and even when I do it is not actually for its portability, but mainly for the local multiplayer which Nintendo support better than anyone else (I mean considering the 'barren' landscape of games, by July there will already be Splatoon, MK, Tetris, Bomberman, ARMs - a pretty impressive list for friends to have a laugh). That said, I could make huge use of the portability too - I have to deal with a 2 hour commute to work and 2 hours back, and a lot of people at least in the UK deal with similar commutes (hence our train network being so congested), whether or not I would forgo my Kindle for gaming is of course questionable, but it would mean during times when I haven't yet found another book series to read I could just enjoy some gaming rather than desperately search the internet on my phone for something to browse :)
