*** Nintendo Switch ***

Yeah a 720p screen seems like the sweet spot considering the screens size, and I think any higher would be too much overhead for battery life.
Vita is 960 x 544 I believe, so should look noticeably better than that (~75% more pixels).

It will of course output at higher resolutions to a TV. The resolution games will typically render at natively is another question however.

1080p downsampled to 720, 1080 for most games on the Wii U so doubt they'd take a step back.

Down sampling is pointless as you lose the battery saving of rendering at 720p natively.

If you're talking about a TV then there's no point at all in down sampling if it is rendering internally at 1080p.

Then how will it work?

720p games that the dock then uses a scaling chip for 1080 on the TV? Seems a backward step when the Wii U was 1080 for most games.

720 on a 6 inch screen is fine for me, I'll probably use it unlocked around the house most of the time.

The Vita screen still looks great, if the Switch is in that territory quality wise but with more power then I'm sold.

Yeh this will be my main use (around the house). The Vita will remain my travel handheld.

Games could switch resolution when video output changes from portable to HDMI out and vice-versa. Remember in the preview trailer when the guy docks the Switch at home to play Skyrim, there's a delay - artificial, but perhaps intended to simulate the game changing render resolution. This solution seems very plausible, but we'll have to wait and see.

When Smash inevitably releases on Switch it will surely be 1080p on hdmi out, any lower and there will be a bit of an uproar for sure. Smash was a game that really benefited from native 1080 (easier to see what's going on with camera zoomed out), can't see them ever going below that again.

Down-sampling in portable mode from 1080 is a possibility. It wouldn't be as power consuming as say having a 1080 res screen on the device would, but seems less likely than a resolution changing solution for reasons mentioned above.

There were barely any games on the Wii U that were 1080P. WW HD and Smash Bros are the only high profile ones I can think of.

I just can't see that being enough? Thought it would be at least 32gb. Fingers crossed that's what was with the X1 dev kits and the x2 will require 32gb.

I can. 16GB is still a lot of information. And remember that is just the standard size. There is nothing to say 32gb or 64gb or bigger cartridges won't come out in the future.

Do you think the carts will be the same dimensions as the 3DS carts?

I'm just wondering if they will make handheld mode compatible with 3DS games by turning it to portrait mode

I'm expecting zero backwards compatibility.

Virtual console, hopefully.

And then we'll have to see which Wii U games get a Switch re-work/re-master.

I suspect this machine is all about looking forwards than backwards though.

Yeah I ain't fissed about backwards compatibility really. I'll keep my Wii U and 3DS anyway.

Hopefully see a Switch version of MK8 anyway. MK8 on the go would be dreamy.

So a few mentions of 1 tflop or what ever of power, roughly 2/3 a xbox one?

On the go that's OK, but was hoping while docked to be more than that. Nintendo :(

They used to add extra chips in the carts, don't think you can do that now though?

The NES lived for 10 years and in that time progress was very quick, don't think the Switch will live near as long or benefit from any density leap in it's time on the market.

I guess it depends how they engineer the dock and whether it is a pure charger and signal through or it is capable of being redesign into a smart dock in version 1.5 with extra processing thrown in.
