It kinda is yeah.

However I do wonder if dialling down graphics/effects (without being drastic) would yield enough return to considerably bump the resolution in handheld. I imagine all the objects/npc's etc will put quite a strain on the SoC.

Just finished the heroes ballad DLC for Zelda

Have to say I wasn't super impressed. They really should have set it in the past and allowed you to do things in Hyrule before it was ruined. Perhaps trials that Link went through or battles in the war.

They basically just reused the boss fights from the divine beasts, added some simple dungeons in the style of the divine beasts and made you mince around the map for a bit. Felt a bit lazy in my opinion. After all the work you get a motorbike as well. That was a let down.

I doubt there will be any more DLC for this and it just feels like a missed opportunity to do something special.

Those things are generally taxing on the CPU, which is clocked identically in both modes.

Yeah it's just the GPU that runs faster while docked right?.
I was aware that dealing with many objects is generally a CPU thing, but tbh I'm not familiar with how the Tegra X1 works exactly so not sure if it would impact resource available for GPU processing.
On the other hand, while manipulating/updating many objects is generally CPU intensive, I think actually drawing them could put significant strain on the GPU / bandwidth?. E.g reducing the draw distance on objects might help free up GPU resources/bandwidth. XC2 has a lot of areas that feel quite populated.

It's strange because Monolith Soft have historically been really solid on the technical side.

I guess, most likely, they just really needed to get the game out this year and fine tuning graphics for handheld didn't take priority.

Draw distance (or more specifically LoD distance) would certainly be an avenue they could look at to free up precious GPU cycles. Based on the resolution drops in docked mode it is clear the game itself needs another optimization pass. I imagine we could see a culling of LoD and certain effects in both modes (more aggressive in portable mode) to maintain a higher overall resolution (more important in portable mode considering how bad it can get) and frame pacing.

Enjoying the game even with these faults though. Even the voice acting is starting to not bother me as much (although fighting against multiple soldiers grates VERY quickly due to them having only 2 lines of dialogue repeated ad naseum..).

I recently got a pro controller (a £21 XB-2 one as my local independant had one in and I had a few games to trade in) and it has made a world of difference to my Switch enjoyment levels.

Yooka-Laylee on Switch - It's a Superb Conversion!

UPDATE: Playtonic confirms 630p resolution, not the 600p counted here.

Yes, we've got PS4 vs Switch graphics comparisons, and yes, we've got a full performance breakdown. Playtonic's Switch port is a rare example of a conversion rebuilt for the strengths of the platform. It's a superb piece of work.
