No Man's Sky - Procedural space game

The only saving grace for me with the 6pm download is I have time to nip to my dad's after work to wish him happy birthday. Otherwise he may have just received a hurried phone call as I alt tabbed out of the game :)

Just seen the "ending" spoilers break on Neogaf. When you reach the center of your galaxy. Not sure what people expected but will be interesting to see people's opinion in a few days time.

I'm going to take a stab at it.

Giant black hole where you go through then enter another galaxy.

Awful ps4 textures incoming.

I wonder if that's one of the reasons behind the distinct lack of any PC footage yet? Hi-res textures are an absolute must on the PC version.

The textures (or most of them at least) are procedurally generated. Depending on how much they've been able to cram into the PC version it's possible you'll be able to generate textures as huge as you like.

The problem with procedurally generated content is that even the most sophisticated algorithms will quickly be broken down when potentially hundreds of thousands of players are sharing screenshots and footage with each other... Exactly the same way some narrative games promise "dialogue choices that allow you to play the story however you want" are easily broken down into a simple flow chart - "here are the responses that matter, and the outcomes are X or Y, etc" and the illusion of choice is completely broken...

On the other hand, maybe that doesn't matter - to have a game of this scale generating stuff by hand is completely out of the question. But what they do have (for now) is a playerbase who want to interact with that world, and in my opinion the best way they could have made use of that is to put in lots of options for player created/influenced content to populate the world for the other players...

For instance... What if you could choose to create a "race" on a planet you found. You fly to the location you want the start to be, and then fly the route as fast as possible, the game records it and lets you tweak the course you made slightly and then it goes up to the server. Other players who discover that planet can have a go at the race and perhaps there's some form of reward system...

Plenty of scope for ideas like that and they would help provide the two things I think a lot of people feel the game is missing - something more meaningful to do, and some content that's obviously not been generated...

Few reviews in

Videogamer 6/10
Trustedreviews 7/10

Obviously based on ps4 version but in terms of gameplay etc they will be identical

Main gripes seem to be lack of actual true variety acter a while

Not had any crashes yet, only one glitch when I landed on a trading post, and when I climbed out of the cockpit I was ejected like a missile and landed about a kilometer away and had to trek back through a toxic storm. Was kinda amusing though :)

My buying advice : If you think this may not be the game for you, it probably isn't. It's a survival sandbox, you choose what you want the game to be about.

I'm enjoying the challenge of harvesting rare resources on an insanely hostile planet with almost non-stop toxic storms and hyper-aggressive sentinels that send walkers after me if I so much as sniff a flower. I could just bugger off somewhere easier, but where's the fun in that? The game is what you make of it. If you go into it expecting to be bored, you'll be bored.

I read the Trusted Review...

Pros- incredible technical achievement.
Cons- frustrating bugs and crashes.

Erm, OK.

Not worried about crashes but in the meat of the review this is clearly the main negative point

How long you choose to ---------- will simply be how much patience you have with the gameplay, or how long before the immersion breaks and the realisation that you’ve done the same four basic tasks for the past ten hours hits. Either that, or the endlessly-annoying game-crashing bugs will get you."

--------- a term that may be a minor spoiler but i doubt it anyway

Wow. You sound exactly like the guy who made this guy. Talking it up.

I get to choose what the games is about? Not a chance.
The game will be what I make of it? Haha..no. It's pretty clear you get a very limited amount of activities to take part it.

I spend my next few hours gleefully planet-hopping, adapting my suit to deal with the harsh climates of wherever I visit. I scan everything and explore everywhere. Sentinels rain down upon me when I become too greedy. Space pirates attack my ship as it becomes abundant with treasures. Everything exhilarates, until the patterns start to emerge, and all you're left with is the realisation that the core mechanics are incredibly basic. There comes a time where your disbelief can no longer be suspended and you realise, in terms of gameplay, No Man’s Sky is jack of all trades, master of none.

I think it's OK but it should have been released as an indy game for about £15.

gotta agree there, I wont be buying at that price, and I've been so excited for this for a long time. Everything I've now read and seen smacks of Early Access with bundles of repetition and some glaring lies from Sean Murray....it's no wonder he looked so uncomfortable in interviews. For £40 this can jog on, there's more content and depth in dozens of Early Access games on Steam right now for a fraction of that price.

By all accounts, it's just not the game I was hoping for, the wait for Star Citizen and an epic Space game goes on. Mind you, at the rate things are going, I'll more than likely be picking NMS up from the bargain basement before SC launches properly.
