North Korea

How is firing ICBM's armed or not in to the Japanese sea not classed as threatening? Whilst saying they are trying to perfect its ICBM technology to hit the USA?

Also the USA have had thousands of troops and envoys living in SK for years..

isnt the short of this just america confirming that they're going to do the same thing they did last time?

i can understand the policy of waiting, hope the country implodes of it's own volition then build relations helping build the new (and ofc western freindly) nation.

North Korea's regime will stay in-power until China cuts them off, and they are unlikely to do that with a a US garrison in South Korea. They have to do this sabre rattling to show how 'powerful' Best Korea is.

Where else is NK going to test its rockets?

Everybody who launches rockets launches them over somebody else's territory eventually.

I have no doubt that NK is attempting to boost its profile as being able to launch long distance Nuclear ICBM/SLBM attacks. But I do not believe for one instant that they would ever make a first strike.

(Even if Fat Boy ordered it, the military commanders would refuse and Kim would suffer a sudden death, just like in any other medieval society where the King made demands that the Barons considered to be insane)

They will never have the capability to launch an effective first strike attack

(Nobody ever has really, otherwise it would have been all over in the 50's and we wouldn't be having this conversation. A first strike has to be capable of destroying everything in one go! Otherwise there is no point. Thats why it is called MAD)

Their long range missile capability can only ever exist as a defensive deterrent against international interference (Hence the stated aim at wanting to target the US)

Question. If in WW2, the US had known that Japan could have responded in kind by destroying NY or SF, would they have nuked Hiroshima/Nagasaki? Of course not!

Do not misunderstand me, I am not "Defending" NK

However, NK/SK is not something that I would want to make an issue of honor.

The US only has thousands of troops and envoys in SK as a hang over from the cold war. The US should actually withdraw. There is no global geopolitical principle at stake here any more.

It is just two neighbouring countries that are hostile to one another. The wider world (And in particular the USA) making a big thing out of it puts us all at risk. Left alone, a War between NK and SK would have little more relevance (Bar some stock market uncertainty) than a War between Mauritania and the Western Sahara.

It is certainly not something that we should be risking global nuclear war over. NK is only our enemy if we chose to make NK our enemy.

I'm not sure on that - there is a danger there that he gets yes men (not just for face) into those positions - traditionally they held a lot of power but of late he seems to be able to take them out on a whim with a lot less risk of comeback than in the past.

Also, you have to understand the psychology of someone who surrounds themselves with yes-men all the time. If you have enough people agreeing with your lies all the time to the exclusion of any opposition whatsoever, you start to believe them. It wouldn't surprise me if Mr Kim actually believes that he can win a war between the US and NK.

I wholeheartedly believe that he thinks he could win a war VS anyone.. And i'm damn sure his people believe it too, afterall how can you disagree with the great leader! especially after all the propaganda about Americans all being drug addicts living in camps

Where else would they fire them?

They are firing them into the safest place they can. The largest piece of water they can reach without going over land.

NK aren't a threat, and much like the Iranian nuclear ambitions are more to do with protection from an attack by the west. With the sabre rattling of the west consistently it's no wonder NK feels like it needs to something to stop it from being attacked, especially if there comes a time where their relationship with China fails.

So has North Korea actually showed any interest in dominating and owning the world?

From what I've seen they are weird and have a different society but they just mind their own business and it's the US government that wants to control the Earth and everything and everyone on it.

I'd be fascinated to know how much his psychology has changed since coming into power - how much does being surrounded by people who atleast at face value agree with everything you say change a person and their perceptions. Early on he seemed to have a much more balanced perception of the world compared to how he has been acting lately.

So would I. I find NK fascinating and I hope one day it comes in from the cold. Not just from a humanitarian perspective but to see some of the psychological reaction of a people suddenly realising that everything was a lie.

Maybe so, however the Generals have quite probably the best General hats in the world at this current time :)

Only to then realise that it's still a lie, only one that everyone silently nods along to as almost all the worlds wealth is in the hands of a few hundred men.
