North Korea

Got to say it’s about time NK and SK got their act together and are now talking to alleviate the tensions.

I’m no fan of Trump, actually loathe the guy but he has to take some credit for getting it to this stage. I just wish he would shut his mouth and his incessant tweets and let the experts get on with solving the NK and SK problem. Because if anyone can royally **** this up, it’s Trump :p

I'm half expecting it - gets right to the knife edge of a real deal and then Trump blusters in and screws it up.

On the other hand we've been here before with the seem kind of meeting years ago and nothing came of it so I'm not holding my breath.

There is a train of thought that says once you've reached a point where your nuclear weapons are viable, why bother to continue to test them. It's very reminiscent of when Pakistan stopped testing, they simply had no more need to do so.

NK is in a bit of a strange position there - though they've demonstrated supposedly the ability to detonate a nuclear explosion they've not demonstrated the ability to put that on a missile, their ballistic missile submarine program is still a long long way from coming to anything and even delivering it via gravity bomb from an aircraft is a bit of a reach with their capabilities. Leaving the only real delivery systems by ground transport of some fashion.

It is a bit up in the air whether they need to do any actual further testing of the nuclear warhead side itself at this point assuming they covertly continue with trying to develop a delivery system.

this keeps on get misquoted even the original researchers where the news outlet pulled the quote from said it was actually probable that whilst a chamber collapsed it would not have rendered their operations useless and that the mountain was in a good enough state for plenty more tests.

Chinese scientists have reportedly said they believe the collapse had lead to radiation leaking from the site so may not be as usable as thought. Plus kinda bad for the environment and surrounding areas.

I expect a lengthy ban for everyone who dared to utter the name of the current US President outside of SC. It's a very serious crime around here.

I expect you to stop abusing the RTM function. 9 reports asking for bans is way OTT given the fact that half the discussion is relevant to the thread anyway.

That said, there is a Trump discussion thread in SC. I’d like to ask anyone that wants to specifically talk about his policies to head there (link). Those that wish to keep this thread open will need to keep it relevant to North Korea.

:)

"half the discussion is relevant to the thread anyway"

Exactly my point, 2 or 3 times I bring Trump up because it relates to a GD topic, yet I get banned. I expect the same for the people in here.

this, they have nukes and long range missiles, not really main laAmericancan range. but more than enough for defence needs.
why carry on, go back to the table and lift some of the sanctions, at least for the time being. they can still develop a lot of tech while at the table.

The prevailing thought is that the persuit of peace is more likely to be around the possibility of massive environmental contamination from their failed containment of the nuclear test site.

NK are likely to ask for international help to make the site safe before it collapses and releases large amounts of radioactive material in the area and particularly over the border into China.

Does this mean Trump will be getting the Nobel Peace Prize? Because if Obama can get it for bombing half of the Middle-East to dust...

Why would he want it? like you say it's been tainted by political bias anyway. Barack Obama getting it pre-emptively for basically promising peace when he ultimately did nothing to stop conflicts and the European Union for keeping peace when it should really be NATO and the US receiving it, without which the Soviets would have rolled across Europe several decades ago.

So Kim would be crossing the border were it not for the sanctions? Do you even believe what you're typing?

It's just sad that some people can't bring themselves to admit that Trump gets some of the credit. If Obama was in power everyone would be saying it's all down to him

I don't think it was all down to Trump, but he played a big part in it by being unpredictable and Kim realising that he can't bluff him in the same way as he bluffed Obama

Meh nobel peace prize is worthless. Look at who has received it recently ie the Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi who is and has been allowing systematic genocide of the Myanmar muslims. So much for it being a peace prize, same goes for Obama who bombed the hell out of Muslim countries as well. So who really cares if Trump gets it, it’s as worthless as the paper it’s written on nowadays.

But I do agree that Trump should get some of the credit with the whole NK and SK peace talks. His sanctions have helped towards achieving peace in the area.

Academically it was the right thing to do TBH - NK was being all charming with one hand and belligerent with the other - going along with the meeting would have been on NK's terms and made a mockery of the US.

Historically NK has never negotiated in good faith and no reason to believe they've started now. (Mind you the same can probably be levelled against the US especially under Trump).
