North Korea

I love how every Trump hater are doing mental gymnastics to make this a non-event when they basically threw a nobel peace prize at Obama for being black :D

The hypocrisy around the world and in this thread is bare for all to see

Please demonstrate the mental gymnastics.I don't remember "every Trump hater" throwing a nobel peace prize to Obama because he is black . You seem to have conflated two different things here.

Being rightfully cautious is rather sensible at this stage. So far Kim has got what he wants. Lets wait and see if the USA gets what they want from it.

Standard practice really. Remember many of these would have voted tory in the last election.

I have no doubt that Kim Jong Un is keeping an eye on Trumps twitter account just in case the President has a change of mind on the plane back to the good ol USA.

I’m interested as to what point Trump critics will turn round and accept that Trump has done a good job and congratulate him?, when NK is completely denuclearised? Or will they just keep moving the goalposts?

anyone count how many times … he a great friend of mine … ?

It wouldn't be very good for trust going forward if he said otherwise.

I do wonder if NK will actually denuclearise though because if an establishment politician gets elected in the US in 2020/2024 US policy towards them will completely change.

Who is moving goalposts? What were the goalposts before?

They never will. Trump could establish peace in the middle east, and he'd still be the devil.

Same with Brexit. Even if the UK becomes the richest country on earth, they will still say brexit was a bad idea.

I remember vividly reading twitter posts from trump critics claiming that the meeting would never happen and they would be impressed if it ever did. These people are still moaning.

So at what point Jono, would you be prepared to come on here and say well done Trump, job done, or will you always find something to moan about, just because Trump.

If he succeeds in genuinely getting them to completely denuclearise and make peace with S Korea and improve their human rights record without having his pants pulled down by agreeing to things like pulling out all US forces from the peninsula before that happens or cancelling all sanctions then yes i will think he will have done well.

At the moment, he has got them to sign something similar to what they have agreed to before many times in the past, whilst also saying he has a strong bond with a murderous dictator and giving them legitimacy on the world stage.

Remember, what Trump has given them, is exactly what they wanted -

The question I have, is how do you go from nuking your own soil, harming your own citizens, to essentially denuclearization in a matter of 6 months. The fact that people on here are potentially supporting trump really does worry me. No doubt Russia are involved in this.

Rob, my question to you is do you deny he is a racist, misogynistic, failure of a business man who recruits climate change deniers and takes the world backwards? How do we know work hadn't been ongoing since the Obama era to get this deal done?

You are the one with the mental gymnastics here. You are essentially saying it's not a reasonable position to be sceptical of how much real effect this will have because other people who dislike trump supported a President who won a nobel prize for not very much. That is about a textbook case of mental gymnastics as you can get. Take a step back and think.

When something actually happens?

All the back slapping and Trumpetting is just unfathomably naive when he has shown how unstable and erratic he is (and I'm talking about Trump not Kim) and nothing has happened other than vague promises that have been made and broken repeatedly before.

You've made a bet on the 3.15 at Chepstow and you're all out spending your winnings before the race has been run...

I have no love for Trump (even as a basic human being) at all but he is doing a good job and not just with the NK issue.

All the personal attacks just prove that people are losing the argument against him, it's the equivalent of being in the playground losing an argument and just coming out with... "yeah, well your Mums fat!".

Trump hasn't done anything with NK that wasn't planned under the Obama era... however he has actually executed fully on that plan rather than where Obama talked a lot but did a lot less and often stepped back from fully executing on it. While what has happened under Trump has been more or less incremental it isn't just a continuation of the rate of change that would have happened by now under Obama either.

EDIT: As an aside - while the focus is on denuclearisation and to be fair that has further reaching threat - NK is in a lot less need of it these days in terms of defensive stick now that they've got the KN-09 platform into mass production :s which really can rain down hell on Seoul and beyond if it came to it unlike their older artillery where the reality was only around 3% could hit Seoul at all and isn't as vulnerable to counter battery fire due to being more mobile and more rapid to deploy.
