Number plates for cyclists...

Besides, Bear's article is dated 2018 and is a pledge by a former Chancellor. I am still yet to find any later sources which say anything about it actually happening. Most later articles, such as the ones I posted, state categorically that it's still not the case.

I looked further into it and it looks like the government rowed back on the pledge by raiding the VED pot for something else https://www.highwaysmagazine.co.uk/VED-hypothecation-fizzles-out-after-2bn-Treasury-raid/9384

Thought someone would say this.....

So what happens when a car comes the other way? They have to drive into a ditch to let the cyclists past? No.... They would go down to single file, so that the car can get past, have a car behind is no different

What happens when you're in a car and a car is coming the other way?

Just because they can go single file, doesn't mean they legally have to, and as @MadMossy says, there is a measure of preventing people performing dangerous overtakes with insufficient room. There's also the argument that by riding 3 abreast, they are actually making it easier for you to overtake (when safe to do so), by reducing their length, and so the time you need to spend on the other side of the road.

Of course the courteous thing for them to do would be to pull over when safe, but there is no requirement for them to inconvenience themselves, just because you believe your journey is more important than theirs.

No it really is! I can comfortably maintain 18mph on a mountain bike with all-mountain gearing and big fat tyres. 20mph on a commuter or road bike is comfortable.
To maintain 18/mph on a mountain bike (I'll use mine as an example) 29" wheel 32/12 you would need to maintain a cadence of 90. That is a high cadence to hold, pro racers aren't much higher than that and are on skinny smooth tyres on non draggy bikes and covered in lycra.

If they weren't arses, they would move into single file to let you past anyway. I've found that especially since the highway code change some don't, as if it's their god given right to make you wait. It's a strange attitude considering how vulnerable they are.

Who else would you talk to while frothing about cyclists going faster than 20mph and (3 last year) deaths caused by a cyclist.

The Daily Mail of course. A hub of like minds.

Commentary by Melissa Kite

The last time I rode my horse on the country lanes of Surrey, I nearly didn’t come back. All thanks to a gang of cyclists.

Only a few steps from the gate of the stable yard, a racing club in formation swarmed downhill towards me, spread across the lane. As poor Darcy began to panic, I screamed: ‘No, please!’

But they kept on coming. The bikes swirled around Darcy and suddenly she was spinning in circles – right into the path of a car behind me. I clung to her neck to stop myself falling, and saw the look on the driver’s face. We were so close I think we both thought I was about to end up on the bonnet. To this day, Darcy trembles when she hears the faintest whoosh of a bike.

Anyone prepared to hurtle past a woman clinging to the neck of a terrified horse is not safe to be on the roads unlicensed and uninsured.

That’s why I’m delighted that, as the Mail reports today, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is hinting changes might be in the offing – including speed limits and registration plates for these menaces of the road who have earned the nickname ‘Lycra louts’.

Can just about manage 18mph on my mtb with 27.5" 2.8" tyres on flat ground, can do around 22-24mph on my gravel bike. If it's flat I can maintain the speed but any sort of incline and I run out steam, and I'll drop to 6-16mph depending on bike and how steep the incline.

Oh yeah. so what about speed then! Only those with cycle computers will know what speed they are riding. Everyone else will have to buy one, and then an MOT for cycles will have to be done like car MOTs because the cycle computer and various other drivetrain parts will have to be tested for road worthiness and accuracy etc.

This is all a massive tickbox exercise for the sake of looking like something is "in motion" high up the chain of politics and will never be something that is actually doable.

It's because they are vulnerable that it's on you to not be the arse and stop to let them past safely, and to likewise not force yourself past them down a narrow lane. Because if for whatever reason you did just that and one or all of them ended up in the ditch, you'd then be liable for reckless driving and endangerment.

This sort of thing just boggles the mind. Anyone who thinks this is anything more than the Tories pandering to their scummiest of supporters needs their heads checking.

Anyone who agrees with this should go out on a bike ride for an hour anywhere that is remotely built up and see how many times you are passed badly, have a car cut across you or generally put your life at risk.

Perhaps they should have a look at the number of deaths cyclists cause a year vs cars or the health damage cars do.

If they actually give a single **** about the safety of people they would be cracking down hard on bad drivers. Not bad cyclists. Every time I am on the motorway there are probably 2-3 awful drivers per mile of road I cover.

This country is getting more and more depressing by the day and sometimes when I hear the views of the frothing masses I think "good". Reading the DM comments on this makes you wish for a volcano you could push them all into.
