NVIDIA 4000 Series

I can't comment on the 20 series, but I know the 30 & 40 series cards have three (sort of) variants. The very basic reference design, the founder edition (custom only to Nvidia) and then AIB 'upgraded' variants.

I had a TUF 3080, which by some miracle I got at release price from OCUK, which was excellent. Then moved up to a 3090FE, and now the 4090FE.

I think with how good the FE models are, especially as they undercut all AIB's on price, it's totally understandable why EVGA pulled out of the market...How can the AIB's compete with Nvidia at the current (ridiculous) price point, while offering something extra and still making money and making sales.

Back on track, yeah I was hoping for a 4090 TUF initially, but availability and price just got way out of hand for me. So slumming it with the FE :D
I had the option to have an FE through the Nvidia invite but snubbed it as I bought a 4090 Aorus Master. A week later my aorus broke and Overclockers didn’t have any stock to replace my card. Was really kicking myself for not getting the FE then! I really like the look of the FE and it seems a lot easier to fit into most cases than some of the huge AIB cards.

Good thing its not atx 3,most useless spec in the history of computers. What does an atx 3 psu offer that a non atx doesnt?
Apart from a 16pin single cable for a 4090 without the need for these silly adapters…….Absolutely nothing at all.

2K.

Fancy picture designs on the cooler like back in the day, Nvidia metallic case badge, Nvidia Hoody, Free mouse, 3 months of XBOX Ultimate, 3 up and coming games bundled.
That would be sweet, it's still a rip off even with that.

Yep, lucky to get a free game these days.

Got Uncharted with 5700X, D/L 128GB - hoping to play sometime in 2024.

And you need a new atx 3 power supply for that? You do realize you just disproved your own point, since the asus thor you suggested people not to buy has a 16 pin cable and is not atx 3? My be quiet 1200 pro also has a 16 pin cable, and so do hundreds of psus out there from evga, corsair or basically any cpu if you buy a cablemod cable. So....????

Thanks for being the Guinea pig for this!

Mine (FE) had the same problem and your post encouraged me to run the update. Very quick and easy process, and all working fine for me now too.
No problem at all mate , I had no choice but to try it as nothing else I did was working and I tried everything from a fresh mb bios install to a fresh Windows install just to eliminate anything my side but alas nothing worked  I was 99% certain this bios update would sort the issue as Nvidia did actually give it to someone a few weeks ago and he reported it fixed the issue but wasn't allowed to share the bios at the time, anyway all done now and happy that it has sorted both mine and yours and probably a few others along the way :D

It doesn’t have a single 16pin cable. You are wrong. So you just made yourself look silly my boy.

The reference design this time around is actually good though and the Palit cards are sub reference in that they have worse power phases and capacitors than the FE. Agree on the TUF card though and would have got this but the price on overclockers was just stupid
All the PCB and their components are within spec as it is Nvidia who signs off the design and approves it so even the cheapest of cards are at least built to spec with the more expensive being over specced to a degree, the only real need for these over specced cards is when going extreme overclocking on liquid nitrogen. The only thing that will occur with the cheaper card will be they will be a little less efficient and probably run a little bit hotter on the vrms etc but if you were planning to watercool the card then this really is a none issue and could even happily pass 600w through even the basic card as the waterblock will be dissipating the heat . Debauer mentions about this in his video on the 4090 Inno chilli 3d which is a basic pcb in a waterblock :)

Looks like DF bothered to test out the new encoder stuff. So NVENC finally fixed, it now just needs one to buy an expensive 4000 series GPU to use it. :(

For our high quality video downloads on digitalfoundry.net, we found that AV1 hardware encoding delivered higher quality than software-based h.264 with a big file size saving and while software-based HEVC encoding delivered smaller files, Nvidia AV1 offered up higher quality.

It does have a single 16 pin cable, no adapters. The heck are you talking about? The PSU side? Who cares, doesn't make a difference, you still have less cables than before and no clutter since they are on the psu
You’ve just answered your own stupidity. “The PSU side”. Clearly people care which is why so many have ordered them, some people want to have a single cable going from the PSU to the GPU. If you don’t like that then don’t buy it. What others choose to spend their money on shouldn’t affect you.

Take a deep breath and try to not let it get to you so much. Life’s too short to be worrying about such things.

I think the big difference from the 'paper' 3xxx series launch is the total lack of excitement and feeling that people are actually desperate to upgrade. Bar some super users and benchmark hogs it feels totally different from that time. Back then people were going WILD over the availability issue. Also in the end most probably got a card in the extended search and after all that can play games perfectly well at good resolutions thank you very much without feeling the need to make what has become a big financial decision for no particular reason apart from wanting to be cutting edge.

The price of the 4xxx series definitely pushes it into the domain of being a big financial decision for most, especially so in the current climate. The boundary between needs vs wants becomes more defined. As you say, the 3xxx remains more than capable at present.
