NVIDIA 4000 Series

Nvidia still seem to think that people will pay out the ass for cards like a lot of people were doing during the mining boom. 4090 might be selling ok but the 4080 is being treated as the red headed stepchild. Probably due to price and the fast one they tried to pull with 2 versions of the "same card" with one being a notable downgrade.
Damage was already done as soon as they decided to have 2 sku's but disguise one. At least the 16gb card is somewhat worthy of the name but the 12gb... come on we're not stupid lol!

The shame of it is the 4080 is a stellar card, easily worthy of being a 3080 successor. it's just £500 / $500 overpriced.
It's a decent card but not Stellar, don't forget the 4090 was 75% faster than the 3090 yet this is only 50% faster than the 3080 which was 65% faster than the 2080 for the same price.

Yeah the 4090 set a high bar tbf, exceeds normal uplifts for sure
Nvidia made the 4090 to keep the performance crown but for everyone ADA is looking like a poor generational performance increase.

If we ignore the 3080 pricing and instead compare the 4080 to the 3080ti as they are priced similarly the generational uplift is only 35% which is only half that of what the 4090 delivers.

The 4070ti is coming in January and will likely be priced similarly to a 3080 yet only deliver around 10% more performance which is very low and actually much worse than Turing.

I literally asked Elon Musk to buy the worlds Nvidia supply and give at cost of £1 to everyone who wanted one

Interesting calculation here. Not only could Elon Musk do that, it's small change to him. He could have bought all the 4090's so far sold (estimated at 130,000) and this would have amounted to only about the same as was handed to the board of twitter in compensation and stocks when he fired them - which he personally paid for.

I imagine Nvidia aren't happy at the very public disaster the 4080 release is. Cards have largely sat on shelves from the launch and it seems that trend will continue. No amount of we sold 1000 cards a day but have replenished another 1000 will wash. Under any normal launch, the top end value sku (one down from the halo sku) would be snapped up and be out of stock for weeks if not longer. That's going back years with the possible exception of the 2000 series which is why the 3000 series happened.

At least with their own store they can control the appearance of scarcity by restricting stock. Retail channels it is all laid bare. I'm sure Nvidia are counting down the days until they limit AIB releases and just handle everything from cradle to the grave. Etailers will be hurt because some people buy complete or near complete systems in component form for the sake of getting everything from one retailer. If a gpu is coming from else where there is less incentive to do so and average order value will drop.

The shame of it is the 4080 is a stellar card, easily worthy of being a 3080 successor. it's just £500 / $500 overpriced.

Thing is, we don't really know what NVIDIA is up to. Are they out of touch? Is there a plan? Are they trying to break the scalpers? Are they trying to get rid of 3080's? Will they reduce the price of the 4080 by £500 slowly over the next two years? We just don't know. Unfortunately, for many who upgrade every two years we have to back off an wait and in the mean time make other plans!

We have now reached the absurd position of the lower down the stack you go, the worse value GPU's become.

Its not supposed to work like that.

I mean, I'm still astonished that weak ass cards like the 1660 Super/Ti cost nearly £300!

They're not worth a damn penny over £175, IMO.

It's not going to change until people stop buying NVIDIA.

Has there ever in the history of gpu launches that only 1 person has openly admitted and entered the roll of honour on the 4080 owners thread?

I genuinely thought the thread got deleted or something but no, it was just on the second page lol.

The estimates are that 1/3 of the available 4080's are sold and that means there is more than one! There are closet 4080 owners! The government needs to start a helpline for these people, to help them deal with their shame and live a meaningful life.

I saw a scalper trying to sell a priority access (GeForce Experience) pass on eBay. WTF. How is that even going to work. Stupid

I have noticed before there are a fair number of really stupid shoppers on ebay. They don't bother to research or check other stores. You frequently find they are paying more money for something on ebay and yet getting almost no rights or warranty. There are way to many dodgey sellers for other items too. Especially if you look at coins and antiques, many of them are fake or way, way overpriced. You really need to know what you are buying with ebay, yet many buyers clearly don't.

Yeah the 4090 is a typical halo product to ensure they have the performance crown. I personally wouldn't compare the 4080 to the 3080ti, it had an msrp of $1119. Like for like the 3080 to 4080 is a good uplift, it's just the price that is all wrong and Nvidia / retailers need a healthy dose of reality that BS won't wash. All likely due to Nvidia greed, market conditions and the fact they need to make the 3000 series look attractive to sell through the alleged masses of inventory they have.

Even if I wanted a 4080 it feels like sales are so poor Nvidia are going to eventually say yeah we messed up, here's some adjusted pricing. It just seems completely unsustainable as they are.

Why even bother with the 4080 at that price unless it was impossible to get a 4090 reference card? I guess that's how Nvidia kills the AIB's though assuming they don't artificially restrict 4090 availability to satisfy their partners.

Does make me wonder, who will drop out next. Survival of who has the bigger bank account to sustain its operations and staff.
