NVIDIA 4000 Series

I think the reality is most people see the only thing the 4080 does better, is RT and most people don't seem to give a crap about RT. No matter how much RT fans bleat to the contrary, it is really not high on tha majority's must have list.

I think it is summed up when mentioning things like the steam hardware survey (avg car being 1660/1060) and the devs want people to buy games which isn't the 3080+ with RT on. The massive amount of people wont care for it and they certainly dont spend the dosh on cards that can do it.

lol it's release day for the 7900 and going by stock and reports on youtube it was very limited supply. Hur dur now everyone is buying £1000+ Radeon from AMD and its 15% market share. See you in January when they are sitting on shelves if AMD can be bothered to produce any kind of supply.

No matter how much RT fans bleat to the contrary, it is really not high on tha majority's must have list. I mean the best I can say is that I personally consider considering it, so £150 extra for a 4080 is just about within "worth it to me" territory, but certainly only just and only because both are over £1k. So personally at current pricing I would be edging more towards a 4080 for the better RT.

Of course power efficiency matters as well but 50W extra over a 4080 is not deal breaking. The other issues I think will be solved in drivers.

All things considered £150 - £200 less cost for similar or slightly better raster, an extra 8GB VRAM, smaller size and uses normal power connectors. Just those points alone clearly make it more attractive for many people. Not to mention that £150 - £200 will get you your RAM, or a motherboard, or an extra SSD, or bring you up a tier (or even two) on your CPU.

So I can see a 4080 price drop soon considering how well received the 7900 XTX has been by the actual people that matter (buyers). I mean as you pointed out, Nvidia dropped some RTX 4080 FE stock to "disrupt" the 7900 XTX launch and they are still in stock 8 hours later. That level of "up yours Nvidia" from buyers is unheard off. So if Nvidia do yet another 4080/4090 price drop then AMD just need to do the same, the 7900 XTX still remains a more attractive proposition because it "costs under £1k".

Strangely even though I would take a 4080 at current prices. If the 7900 XTX was £950 and the 4080 was £1100, I would have had the, "it's under £1k" feels and the 4080 would not get a look in.

I see you did mention power efficiency/consumption too but a 4080 does better by quite a bit better here across the board:

And before we say PE/PC doesn't matter, rdna 2/amd fans used to/do swear by this according to the poll:

So odd seeing such a u-turn here.... especially as I imagine most "pc gamers" would have multi monitors.... Of course it might very well get fixed.

As for other advantages, I couldn't care less about some of the below but whether we like it or not, they are pros/advantages of a 4080 over a 7900xtx:

- based on videos so far as locky pointed out here, looks like 4080 has better/smoother frame latency, another thing which supposedly was/is the be all when it came to rdna 2 vs ampere in likes of cod and so on.....
- as you mentioned, we all know rt is better
- cuda (I couldn't give a rats ass about this but plenty of people do)
- nvidia streaming/recording, amd have closed the gap big time but nvidia are still regarded as winning here
- dlss, some don't care but arguably it is better than fsr 2 still in IQ "overall" and uptake and main thing is, nvidia has access to both
- frame generation, again some hate it with a passion but some seem to love it so may not be an advantage for you or others but it could be for others

All that could be very much worth it for certain users.

The only real advantages as of right now with the 7900xtx over a 4080 is:

- smaller and thus fits in more cases
- miles better if you only play cod as your main game
- has an ever so slight edge in raster "overall"
- extra 8gb vram
- £150 cheaper, which is perfectly good/valid if said buyer doesn't care at all about any of the above advantages of the 4080 (but as you kind of touched upon yourself, when spending 1+K, chances are, an extra £150 isn't going to be that big of a deal if it means getting a better package overall)

If issues get fixed and the weird performance variance is fixed then 7900xtx could be more appealing but as it is, lets keep shaming people who buy 4080 but pat everyone on the back for buying 7900xtx :D :p

What's it to you, got out to contribute to the thread apart from trying to mod it.

I'll quote the guy I'm replying to, happy now, got out else to add.

Only yesterday this poster was laughing at how "bad" the 7900 XTX was based on reviews and that somehow AMD messed up. This was despite the fact that most reviews of the 7900 XTX were reasonably postive. So the fact these GPUs sold out feels like a loss to them because some people simply have an anti AMD narrative. They arrive at their "opinions" not based on actual data, but on what they want everyone else to believe. So their confirmation bias kicks in and they focus on the points that fits their illogical narrative, or simply twist facts to fit that narrative.

In their weird universe:
  • The fact the 7900 XTX trades blows with or arguably (marginally) beat the 4080 in raster is not important.
  • £150 cheaper is not important
  • The smaller size and "normal" power connectors don't matter
  • It has crap power consumption (despite being between a 3080 and 3090 in this metric)
  • Is crap at RT because 3090Ti levels of RT are now "laughable"
  • RT and DLSS are all that matters
For the record, I personally feel the 7900 XT, XTX and 4080 are all decent GPUs, just overpriced.

Well doh, seeing as you follow my posts so closely, you missed out the part where I **** off nvidia and the 4080. So your post is BS. Most reviews agree you might as well stump up for the 4080, like HUB, the 7900 makes trash priced cards like that look a decent buy.

you can still overclock the core and memory without touching the power just wont be as high as one with a 600W+ limit although tbh past the point of diminishing returns at 500w as per @LtMatt finding . If you did want to have a play about though then would be no issue flashing another bios on to your card especially considering its watercooled , temps will not be an issue at all :) Time to upgrade that PSU , you own a 4090 ;)
I've got some time off owing, I'll have a fiddle. Don't want to have to turn the fans up much though. I like it quiet.

None of the cards are worth the money but it is interesting that people seem to be jumping on the 7900XTX despite it offering similar price / performance with less features and what appear to be some teething issues, maybe people are just so ****** off with nvidia lately that they have lost the mindshare.

I was genuinely surprised they sold out myself and it's not just a UK thing. So it might just be the less than $1k psychological barrier thing, as well as some "screw you Nvidia".

I reckon so, its caught the defence brigade off guard. AMD done a poor job they thought battle had been won forgetting the 80 class card was still twice the price!

OCUK had ones for £1300 which sold out aswell so it can't just be the 1k as even the MBA cards were slightly over that.

Yeah, the cheapest in stock 4090 is about £1750 so it was not just a case of saying, "at this price I may as well add the £700 difference". Even the 4080 has a problem of being £150 - £200 more expensive for the same or slightly worse performance unless you care about RT. It should also be noted that a lot of people do not have cases that can hold most 40x0 class GPUs, apart from the much rarer FE versions. Or maybe they have a 360 radiator and fans setup for intake, so a 4080 or 4090 are not an option.

I know my Meshify C with front intake fans fitted will not take anything other than an FE variant of the 4080 or 4090. I'm certainly not compromising airflow by removing a front intake fan, nor am I paying an additional £130ish for a bigger case that takes up even more room at my feet. In fact the reason I bought the Meshify C was because I got tired of the larger "normal" sized cases.

Buying a GPU is not just about the price/performace.

Agree… I am currently running a mini ITX build with a reference 6950 XT. So if I were to upgrade, the XTX is my best choice due to size.

That was me.
AMD, close to the 4080, but many issues with drivers / power etc reported and I don't buy the "fine wine" argument for AMD.

So 4080 or 4090
Well if I am going to drop big bucks, may as well go large and probably see me into the next series 5000 without the need to upgrade.
Add that to that I have recently upgraded to 13900 etc etc, well what the darn, may as well go big.

Luckily I can afford it now, so may as well do it now.
Also have my 3080 and 9900k package to sell too.
