NVIDIA 4000 Series

Why on earth are you are replying with that chart as if I said I disagree with it or it proves something to me?

For the record, I was mortified at the price of the 4000 series cards. My missus cooked my favourite foods and did all the stuff I 'like' but I was still left curled up in bed under my sheets inconsolable for days after the price of 4000 series was revealed! Now, I refuse to put a 4000 card in my system even if Jensen paid me and gave me his leather jacket!

That being said, it does not give me (or you) the right to be a condescending so and so to those who do want to give Jensen their money.
If I curled up in bed and moaned about GPU prices I think my wife would leave me, and I don't think I'd blame her. It's really not the end of the world.

The more you pay the more you pay next time.

Wait until next gen when the 5080 is £1600 and it looks like a 5070, and the 5090 is £2K and upwards. And the 5070, which is actually the 4060ti is now £1200.
A 4090 maxes out many modern games at 4k 144. Monitor fps or graphics will need to keep up to keep increasing prices exponentially.

I don't think NV/AMD will care one jot whether monitor or graphics tech will need to keep up or not, they'll keep raising prices if people keep paying, there's always some new "feature" to invent to justify raises, their shareholders aren't interested in outside factors like that. I do understand your point though.

I know, it was tongue in cheek. No beds were really curled up in! :D The point being irrespective of my views of the poor value relative value of 4000 (compared to 3000) I shouldn't be condescending to those that for whatever reason buy a 4070Ti or 4080 etc.

I think the hardware performance will start slowing down from now on and I can’t see a 5090 being as larger jump as the 4090 when it will be going from an enhanced 5nm to 3nm although I expect it’ll get a bump in price.

The midrange is now stagnating with the same price to performance as last gen and the low end has been stagnant for years.

I would prefer to see huge improvements in efficiency before continuing with better performance.

Honestly are people fine with their gpu consuming 300+ watts...

I look forward to a time when I can afford 4k gaming, but not at huge power levels.

Gpu manufacturers like to crank the cards to the max now but the new cards can be very efficient with some manual adjustments.

Yes and Yes.

The reason why we have GPUs with huge power limits is because consumers demand max performance over all else. That's the feedback Nvidia and Amd have received- the average person who buys a high end GPU these days only cares about performance and so that's why we are getting large power hungry GPUs.

If people stop buying high end GPUs and go back to the good old days where your average PC gaming enthusiast was buying 60 or 70 series 150-180w GPUs then amd and Nvidia will change how they design the high end models too

Which makes @stooeh point all the more pertinent and correct. The vast majority of people were not able to get a 3080 at anywhere near the MSRP of £650! ;)

I don't know why people think this. From the time I decided I wanted a 3080 to getting hold of an FE card was about 2 weeks, i signed up for alerts, missed out on one and then the next weekend got one

That same week there were also aib cards at the curry place that weren't rediculously over MSRP too

Depends per game and what you're after: image quality vs. speed.
I'm currently using a 5600 with a 4070TI and there is some bottlenecking especially with RT enabled. Most noticable in Spider man and Cyberpunk. Everything else so far is good. I have been thinking of getting the X3D, however ATM I just can't justify the extra outlay just for a few frames, especially the 1% lows.
BTW I run a 1440p monitor and try to max out natively first, to reach 60+ fps, if not then DLSS is used.

And yet I can give you 14 people I personally know of that from December 2020 up until about May 2022 (mining crash) who tried and failed to see if they could get a 3080 FE at MSRP. Those us might remember that the 3080 FE drops became so rare that they were compared to rocking horse poo.

Just because you and that lucky sod (@TNA ;)) got them at MSRP doesn't means that it was easy for the rest of us mere mortals. ;) It's not even easy to get a 4090 FE at MSRP now and the 3080 FE was 10x worse due to mining and covid.
