**Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti Review Thread**

Neither my TXs or 290Xs throttled on air, all that is needed is to use a custom profile.

Having said that the TXs are far easier to keep below their thermal limit than the 290Xs and the NVidia cards are far quieter too.

None of this has anything to do with the 980 Ti owner thread though.:)

Well the fact you had to use a custom fan profile is something imo that shouldn't be. Regardless of how loud it is or how much it downclocks, if the nvidia stock fan profile can't keep the card from throttling then its something that needs addressed.

Only mentioned it in here as its the first time ive seen people saying their tx's throttled.

To be honest I think the throttling is more down to the power limit on the stock bios.

On the maxair BIOS I was running 1500mhz and going over 70c and the card was stuck at 1500mhz.

+1

I use water and the boost seems to be determined by what software is being run. The temps hang around the mid 40s overvolted and overclocked yet the cards will boost anywhere from 1441mhz to over 1500mhz depending on what is running.

As a rough guide you get lower boost @2160p and higher boost @1080p where the workload is lower.

I have said it a few times and I mentioned it in my review on youtube. I am interested to see how much the Ti's are throttling though. Don't get too wrapped up in the tit for tat and history will repeat again and again and best to not let it get to ya :)

My oc'ed MSI GTX 970 never goes above 64c on load, granted my case is well cooled and I use custom fan profile. So seeing the tempratures of up to 87c for the 980 TI reference cards in reviews, its a turn off tbh. I wonder what custom card I should buy for the 980 TI. I haven't seen any of MSI yet though.

If you read up on how the Titans and Titan Xs are setup it will answer your questions.

The priority for the cards is quietness but the user can either safely increase the thermal limit or raise the fan speed or both.

The Titans are designed as cool quiet running cards unlike the Hawaii cards which are no good at either with the reference cooler.

Anyone want to buy a reference 290X cooler, I have 4 doing nothing !!!

Ah thought so, no takers.:D

Well from the leaks we've seen so far the only way AMD can handle the heat is by using an AIO which a lot of people don't want.

^ Indeed, my overclocked MSI gaming 980 doesn't go over 65 degrees under full load, and that is on the stock fan profile as well. It is also pretty much silent.

I think i would miss not having something so cool running and quiet in future.

Okay.. a possitive update.. thinking it just couldnt be right that it got so hot i went over every dust filter in the machine and the front panel one needed a bit of cleaning, wasnt bad but what the heck.. Also turned every single fan in the chassis up to max, its a bit louder but nothing compared to the 980 ti at 65% or higher. It has made the temps a good deal better. Witcher 3 only pushes the temps to 83-84 now and the fanspeed has gone down to 55 which is much better on the ears :P this is with an overclock on the boost and ram by another 100mhz.. so overall not bad.. didnt have to run the chassis fans so fast before but its a small tradeoff for the overall good it did.

1. so its loud
2. its hot.
3. draw a lot of power.
4. trottles

and people are fine with that somehow?
Think I heard this before?
if I paid 750 euro it would have to do better than that.

Well i can say right now the reference cooler doesnt seem to do a very good job at cooling this bad boy.

EDIT: And its pretty noisy to.. this is after 5 minutes of witcher 3 with everything maxed at 3440x1440 including hairworks.. was out in the wilderness where i got roughly 45 fps.

Thats toasty ....could warm a room

1. It isn't loud, nowhere near reference 290x loud.
2. It works fine at the temps he has it at now.
3. Draws the same power as a 290x yet smashes it.
4. Throttles a few mhz not hundreds like the reference 290x did.
5. You just going to continue trolling threads for cards you have zero interest in because you're that bored of waiting for AMDs new card?

What fan profile are you running?
Auto actually.. which makes things much better now..and all this is with a boost clock of 1400 on stock voltage with powerlimit set to 110%

You can cross number 4 out as ive solved that problem without touching the fan curves. Cant speak for nr 3 as i dont have any way of measurring it. Number 2 well yes its a bit hot but its gotten better after i fixed a few things and nr 1 also a good deal better now.. So im starting to turn from a bit sad to optimistic about my purchase. On the performance side i went from 35fps in witcher 3 at 3440x1440 with my 780 lightning everything low to a solid 60 locked with hairworks off and HBAO off and rest maxed...with gpu usage of 70-90% depending on where i am.
