NVIDIA GTX 970 OWNERS THREAD

Is it possible to se a custom fan profile for the Strix in Afteburner while retaining the 0db fan feature? I'm quite happy with semi-passive cooling but I'd like the fans to kick in at a lower temp threshold.

Seems a bit wasteful to let a card which can run a lot cooler reach 67 deg before the fans do their magic. Any modern game will make the GPU reach such temps in no time and setting the fans to start spinning at, say, 55c would probably keep the peak temperature well under 70c.

I tried to set up a custom fan profile in AB, and set the RPM to 0 at under 55c but the program shows them at 20% (and I can't hear whether they're really spinning or if this is just a bug in AB;p)

I can't say for sure on the ASUS, but my MSI can do it, however, the fans will only start spinning at 28%, any lower, they will start/stop all the time :)

So maybe you need to increase the fan speed a bit to make them start spinning, also, if you enter settings, u can monitor fan tachometer to see the RPMs, that should definitely tell wether or not they are spinning :)

Something is wrong, I get perfect scaling with my 970's and amazing performance!

i really hate that new game ``the evil within``, but it's damned stable, it hasn't crashed once :eek: the GTX 970 in SLI is near perfect, they've really improved the drivers in the last week

dont bother with custom fan profile at all, you dont need it, these cards are so chilled out, just run it on default auto

i'm really pleased with this pc build, the Gigabyte Socforce is flipping brilliant, it's a test bench OCers mobo only, it's not even recommended for gaming, but it's a million times better than my old ASrock

no the fans are starting well before 67 degrees...... 67 degrees or up to 71 degrees, is the final top temperature at max benchmark/overclock, but my fans have been running at least 30 seconds before the temps hit 67 degrees.

that temp in SLI is very low, both the 7970 and 7990 were way higher than that, plus making a dreadful noise.......obviously.

Well the fans on my Asus strix don't start spinning until 67c I can assure you of that because I can see them through my Corsair 450D window :)

..even during the most punishing benchmarking, I've never seen the temperature go above 72c either, such a good card, such a good cooling solution.

Curious as to what people are getting out of their cards.

I have a MSI 970 Gaming.

Currently I have it at 1504Mhz with no additional Core Voltage. I haven't touched the memory yet.

Simply upped the power limit in MSI to 110 and increased the core clock by 150. Card reaches 70 Deg C.

Is there any gain on these with increasing the voltage? What realistically are you guys getting for overclocks? Just wondering if I will get much more out of it and if the voltage increase will help any?

thanks!

Running mid 1500s stable with memory at +500

Well, mine can occasionally go up to 74 in Crysis 3 at 1522mhz (usually sits between 69-73, sometimes lower, depends on the game/benchmark), which I find quite worrying.

I found out how to easily set a custom fan profile in AI Suite 3 but this also overrides my O/C (I'd have to use the Suite for overclocking as well). Honestly, I'd rather leave the fans on auto. What is the max safe temp for these cards?

My case's cooling solution is not perfect (1x120mm intake fan, 1x120mm exhaust on the back and a 200mm exhaust on top) and my cable management is just so-so but I have a spare 120mm PWM-controlled Enermax T.B. Silence lying around. Should I install it on the side to blow some air on the GPU or will it impede airflow inside the case?

I got my hands on the GTX 970 MSI, a G1 and an EVGA SC ACX 2.0 over the last few days.

ALL 3 have coil whine, seemingly at a very similar point, and the higher the frame rate the worse it gets. Limiting to 60 fps makes it all but disappear.

Have settled on the EVGA purely based on the G1 is massive, MSI no backplate and not to my taste colour wise, my PSU having 2 x 6 pin pci-e cables which is ideal for the EVGA, and the free 5 year warranty and backplate offer currently.

I had to RMA an 8800GTS to EVGA about 6 years ago and the service was faultless, and that was before advance RMA.

Also, something I haven't seen mentioned - the molex-pci-e adaptors in the box from EVGA are black braided whereas the ones from the Gigabyte are non-braided bare wires (Urgh).

FANS - All very quiet. Had to flash the EVGA (once I decided to keep it it) to v1.1 bios to get the 0rpm fan on idle that is standard with the MSI. Didn't go as far as flashing the G1 to allow sub 35 percent as wasn't keeping it, but ultimtately all three cards run cool and at 35 percent all are very quiet.

That being said, the EVGA at 4,000 plus RPM's sounds like a plane is about to land in my office (the others are just as bad tbf).

JamesM, did unlocking the bios improve you heaven scores under water cooling?

I am just wondering if my theory on water cooling making no difference due to the cooling head room come true? lol

They are all quiet - only got the EVGA to 4,000 plus using Precision, didn't mess about with the other two. The EVGA doesn't even hit 50 percent when stressed.

I'm in a similar boat you you, small case with minimal airflow. A custom fan profile does help as you can get it to kick in faster sooner help lowering the max temp it reaches.

Well, I guess it's not that bad at 1522mhz but I'd be a lot more comfortable with it running sub 70c (to be fair) most of the time. I can imagine the card easily shooting up to 80c in summer due to this passive cooling gimmickry;p

g1 installed cant even hear it :D

tested a few games some are double from my old oc 7950(7970)

so nice boost.

what fan setting in MSI ab ?

On that cooler you should be grand with auto fan if running at stock. On the wf cooled 780's which are hotter, either of mine will hit 70c on auto, but with a custom 1-1 fan ratio,( ie 50% at 50c) neither will break 65c at stock speed or oc'd.
