Would be nice to see a drop in price on the 970. Tempted to grab another. But when you add the cost of two 970's you would be better off with a 980ti.

Only going to hazard a guess, you might be running out of vram. Lower the MSAA and that might buy you back some space.
Not running any AA, shouldn't be hitting 3.5GB without it I wouldn't think? Will try lowering some other stuff I suppose.

Which 970 should I go for? I have about £280ish to spend on one. I would like to have a reasonably quiet cooler but with overclocking potential.
970 G1 always gets my vote.
Otherwise Strix or MSI are good calls.
What are the fans like? I read they get loud under load.
I must have been thinking about a different 970 as I've just had a look at a few reviews and they do say it's quiet. G1 it is then

Is 1442 stock boost clock a reasonable speed for a 970? I'm just wondering if it's even worth bothering trying to overclock it.
Getting awful stuttering in BF4 at 4K
Like, the game completely freezing for half a second at a time.
Constantly reporting 40-65 FPS but it feels unplayably bad.
