NVIDIA GTX 970 OWNERS THREAD

I have the KFA Infin8 970 and must say it's a cracking card at 1080p. Currently playing Witcher3 at the GeForce experience settings and it runs like hot butter off a knife :D

What are the noise levels like? Any better than the G1 or MSI Gaming? Sound is a major concern for me and as far as I know, the MSI is one of the quietest 970s.

I've decided to update the OP to be more like Kaapstad's owners threads as they look very good.

I'll be adding to it as I have time, I'll need to redo the roll of honor as it was extremely outdated and lacking of owners so if you want to be on it just respond to this :)

Alternatively as I don't own the card anymore if there's a 970 owner who would like to run a 970 owners thread I will get a mod to close this one so you can start a fresh one :)

Second fan only tends to kick in while gaming otherwise it's fairly quiet. I'm not able to compare however I've seen reviews suggesting the Strix is quiet in desktop.

I'm not sure what to make of my card: KFA2 GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infin8 Black Edition".

The maximum core clock I see with afterburner is 1380mhz. I think from what I read that's on the low end considering the factory OC but then I don't understand boost, maybe it's normal.

I had a tdr once in the witcher 3 (temps in the 70s) so I turned up my case fans which drops the temp to 66 degrees maximum and haven't had recurrence.

On the one hand I can just turn up the air flow. But maybe I have a bad card, I don't know.
Is it usual to have to turn up the fans in the most demanding games? This is the first 'high end' card I've owned, always had the x60 mid-level before + I usually play 4x/strategy/rpg.

Not sure what to think/do about this.

Unfortunately this didn't happen with the 970s, the 980ti however did

Scratch that, that wasn't the case. I remember on the day of the 300 series release, that morning the 970 prices hadn't changed so I ordered from a competitor. I took a nap and woke up later that evening to find that OCUK had significantly dropped the regular prices of the 970s. I instantly cancelled my other order and ordered the MSI Gaming 970 from OCUK.

The card itself has performed well. On default settings the fan never exceeds 60% speed when the card is on load. There have even been times where the fans haven't even been spinning on load. At max speed the fans can be heard, but of course with normal settings the 50% fan speed can't be heard, especially over my noisy case fans (one of them is running at full speed due to no fan control, I should put an LNA on it, but I'm too lazy).

I've got it on a +140 core +500 memory overclock with 110% powerlimit and no extra voltage. I could go higher, but I haven't had the time to experiment, it did +185 (breaks the 1500Mhz barrier with it) fine with voltage at max (+87), but I want to get the best OC without voltage. There's little difference between the +140 and +185 in games FPS-wise I've found. Both overclock give me what seems to be 10 more FPS in various games like JC2, Crysis 3 and GTAV. Plus I haven't had the opportunity to OC my CPU yet, I've been dumb not to since I have a beefy cooler. Should improve the minimum and average FPS according benchmarks I've seen on the 4790k owners thread.

With the modest overclock, it runs GTAV maxed (grass detail set to v.high instead of ultra) at 1080p with fps dropping to low 50s according to benchmarks. So good, I'm very tempted to get a second. Though I'll wait until I have reason to, or if Pascal doesn't give us a 970 priced card with twice the 970 performance (~980ti performance).

I already own a Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming and play at 1080p at the moment, bought it Oct last year.. My plan was to get another one later on and run them in SLI, then move up to 1440p towards the end of this year(Using DSR while on 1080p).

I've got £400 in the bank now which means I can buy the second card and get a good 750W PSU to run my system on. Currently I have a Corsair CS 650W. My system consists of i7 4970K @ 4.4MHz, 16GB 2133MHz Corsair Ram,256GB SSD + 2 HDDs and MSI Z97 Gaming 7 mobo.

I still think SLI is a good route but AMD Fury and 980Ti have come out recently. I think two 970s is better than a single Fury Pro. 980 Ti is tempting but it means going through the hassle of selling my 970, still getting a better PSU and then stumping up for the Ti.

As fellow 970 owners what do you guys think? I love my 970 G1. Never missed a beat(or a frame) at 1080p. I have it in a NZXT H440 and the temps are very good but if two in SLI got too hot I have a second rig in a Phantom 630. I could swap rigs around so two cards in SLI are not a problem, heat wise.

I realise a single GPU solution is always better but since I've already got a 970 and I'm very happy with it............?

I've thought about this myself and was so close to getting another 970 that it was actually sitting in my shopping basket.

However I fear SLI will disappoint me. On it's own a 970 is cool and quite. SLI will make things louder, hotter and then not all games will have great scaling.

IF you really really need an upgrade, I would sell up and get a 980ti. The more expensive option over the cheaper 2nd 970, but the better option imho.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like we are of the same mind. Any idea what a second hand G1 970 will fetch?

MSI GTX 980Ti can be had for £570. Add in the cost for an EVGA 750W G2 and that brings it up to £670. If I could get £200 for my 970 then I think I could just about do it. On my budget it will be tight though. I'm then eating into my monitor budget come Christmas time. I was thinking about £400-ish for a 1440p 27" one.

It's a tough one.

Why do you need a new PSU?

The Corsair CS650 won't be good enough for 970 in SLI will it? I assumed I would need a better one to do it and for a 980 Ti if I went that route. Would it be OK? I was thinking about the quality of the PSU as well as the wattage.

Must admit, never been comfortable with the CS brand even though I haven't had any problems with my set-up. No crashes or blur screens etc.

Im considering adding a 2nd 970 when i can get a used one for around £170,the cost of switchibg to a Ti is just too much to justify for the perf bump(including a block would be £450ish).For 1080p/144hz sli 970s should still be pretty good.

You might be all right with that PSU. But I'm no expert send OcUK a webnote.

I'll let you know shortly, just running some 1440p tests on my 970sli then fitting my 980ti and re-running them.
