Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

got 3 x galax SOC GTX980's,

but need help trying to cool these bad boys at the minuet they when i have all 3 in and playing a game the shoot up to 90-95 degrees and start to down clock
i have tried spacing them out in my case as much as i can and they still do the same thing, the case i am currently using is the corsair 750d, i don't really want to water cool them as its not really in my budget, could anyone give me some advice on a effective way off cooling them

Hey Guys,

Undecided here whether to buy a second 980 for my wc setup for 4K gaming - or is there a single card on the horizon that will enable gaming on 4K with settings turned up? It is just that I would prefer a single card setup, but then again two cards fill her up nicely. Lol.

What to do?

Mark

What's your case and fan layout?

General rule is positive pressure, ie more fans blowing in than out.

Also are you using custom fan profiles?

Can you get a fan behind them to blow some cool air in between them, that or can your case take a side fan? Being non reference cooled, theese type of cards can get pretty hot when closely spaced in sli. The heat expelled gets trapped between each card leading to higher temps. Ideally for sli especially in a tightly spaced board, you really need reference blower style cards if sticking to air cooling.

Mine ran too warm even on it's own!
at the min i only have two in as the downclocking was getting on my nerves and they actually are running at about 50-55 degrees in games, untill i can figure something out to cool them down with all 3 in, am thinking about getting a new case but i am very limited to what i can get as i have 4 ssd and 4 hdd

That SOC has massive HS so it should run cool, I'm guessing the fans are not up to the job.

Give this man a prize

Yep it's the fans, cheap and nasty fans on a brilliant cooler!

On my G1 at nearly 1600mhz I could leave it on auto and it'd never throttle and never go over 64C, but the SOC.... 90% fan speeds hitting 75C+. The same issue also affected the Palit, good cooler, cheap fans.

i have a corsair 750d and i have 2 corsair af140l on the front and 2 corsair sp140 on my h110 and then on the back i have another corsair af140 on the rear have no hdd cage infront off my fans and air movement is fairly good inside the case

Does your 750D have the solid front panel? It can be quite restrictive for air intake. Corsair were supposed to be releasing a mesh panel for the case, though i havent seen any users with it on their cases yet.

Nice :)

I've got a Corsair 540, three fans at the front, two at the bottom and one at the rear, it feels like a damn wind tunnel in my case. Made no difference to the SOC though

You say with 2 in there you get acceptable temperatures, so maybe water cooling the middle card is your best option if cash is getting too tight for putting them all under water.

You've probably checked... but it's worth checking... I assume you have checked that it's not just one of your three cards shooting up to that temperature?

Are you monitoring temperatures individually or relying on precision x / afterburner readout - as that only shows the hottest card temp.
