Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

*EDIT*

First impressions: Damn it's sexy, I'm in two minds as to if I like it more than the GTX780 Hydrocopper or not but we'll see. The obvious thing about this card is that unlike previous HC cards which almost all used Swiftech blocks, this one uses an EK block. I don't know if this is because EVGA have switched to EK now or just because Swiftech couldn't meet their schedule this time. It's worth mentioning this is NOT the EK 980 block with a different cover, its an entirely different block, custom for this card, and unlike the EK 980 block this one has no jet plate so you can use either side as the in/out, you're not limited to fixed in/out ports like on the new EK design, and personally I think that's great as sacrificing that flexibility for an extra degree or two at most was a mistake on EK's part IMO.

Another thing I should probably note is that although this is an EK block, it is designed to look like a Swiftech block, and so it won't be compatible with regular EK bridges (I wonder how EVGA sold that to EK? "We want you to make a custom block for our card, that looks like one of your competitors blocks as we like their designs better, oh and can you get it done ASAP, we expect to sell a dozen or so of these"). But because it is still an EK block it won't perform like a Swiftech block, which in this scenario is a good thing because Swiftech blocks usually cool the GPU better than EK but the RAM/VRM much worse. As the 980 core runs cool anyway (compared to Titan/800 series) this is the best of all worlds.

Could do with some advice with regards to tweaking your bios.

I followed the guide from this website:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1517316/...d-980-firmware-zosons-h2o-and-air-custom-bios

And I extracted my own bios as per instructions and made my own custom bios using the H2O BIOS settings.

I've managed to flash the bios no problem, so all good there.

One thing I am not sure about is when using MSI afterburner about upping the voltage slider. Is this something you still do with a custom bios? Just worried I would fry my chip if I was to up it.

If anyone could give some advice it would be appreciated.

I've since gone back to my original bios for the time being until some light is shed on this matter!

:)

Anyone running a 980 in an H440? What temps are you seeing at stock load?

Interested in any results from any style of cooler (blower or not)

Sorry to be OT but you are all in here.

Thanks

I have a less-aerated TJ-08.

180mm intake on low.
120mm exhaust as part of the H80, lowest setting using a Zalman Fanmate.
OCUK Reference 980.

Currently idling at 39ºC at 26% fan, maxes out at 73ºC at 75% fan.

Pretty sure that bios runs capped at 1.3v. I wouldn't use any of the bios's on that page to be honest, they're really not the best. Make your own for what you need.

Ordered the EVGA, based on my points below

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclock ACX 2.0 4096MB

1) They allow you to remove the cooler add a different cooler, and even send out replacement coolers if fans are faulty, the Galax company doesn't

2) Free 5 year warranty if you register the card before 21st March

3) I've seen reports of people overclocking and not getting above 67C, the KFA2 got into the mid 70's nearly 80's at 90% fan speed!

4) A more known brand, in other words more people will have the card than say a Zotac, better custom bios support

5) High quality fans, not cheap branded like most cards

etc

Thanks guys !

What are the chances of coil whine on a Gigabyte 980 GTX G1? I'm used to it with a Gigabyte 780 GTX OC, hate it but live with it.

The only time I had coil whine was on the load screen of FIFA15 due to the high frame rates ? Never did it on BF3 or BF4..

I'll let you know tomorrow if the new Gigabyte does the same !

If you guys could, would you mind telling me what benefits the 980 G1 has over a 290x?

I've always been an Nvidia fanboi if you will, I just need to know it's worth it.

I game at 1080p and like to run everything at ultra. Some games are starting to challenge that in my current build and I might be going to 1440p soon.

Is now a good time to buy. I know there is always the saying is 'wait for x because of new card blah blah'. But that's always the case. So is now, financially a good time?

It's such a difficult question to answer. I thought I had convinced myself that I didn't want to go SLI with 4gb vRam and that my 980 G1 Gaming would tide me over until the next batch get released.

Now I've got a water block waiting to be fitted and I'm itching to buy a second G1. I think I need to stay off this forum to be honest!

Look at it this way, if you buy yourself a 980 right now then you've bought yourself the fastest single gpu available. There will always be a faster card coming, it's always gonna be a question of how long will you have to wait, and how much better will it be...
