Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

So that's a choice of

EVGA 980 GTX
OcUK ref 980 GTX

Get the cheaper OCUK version, it will clock to and well beyond the EVGA version.

You also left out the MSI version, but that's £10 more than the OCUK brand for the same clocks out of the box. :p

What makes you assume that?

The ACX2.0 SC for the same price as OCUK reference card is one of the best clockers in the reviews I've seen... along with the 5-10 year warranty.

OCUK Reference design = possibly better for SLI if you want heat exhausted out of the case.
3 year warranty
lower guaranteed clocks, unknown OC clocks

EVGA ACX2 SC
5 year warranty (upgradable to 10 year for £30-40)
+150Mhz out of the box, likely higher-binned chip means slightly improved chance of higher OC

Would anyone be using a GPU from 2005 today? A 10 year warranty sounds good, but it's likely to be a paperweight by then.

My thoughts similarly... hence not choosing the option. I was nice to get a 5 year transferable warranty though, helps re-sale value when I upgrade.

I'll probably jump over to the 990Ti / 390X whenever they are released.

IIRC EVGA only bin for Classy and KP cards (or at least thats how the 700 series was).

Well... the "SC" is one of the better clocked cards out there, do you think they are confident every chip will make the clock speed?

There must be some testing involved surely... even if it goes Classified -> SC -> Normal in their selection.

Whereas the OCUK ref card will be luck of the draw?

Only speculation, but would assume out of 1000 of each card, that the EVGA "SC" would clock slightly better. May be wrong though.

Not saying the OCUK ref card would be a bad choice at all.

That's all it is, an assumption, based on how well the 970 version clocked.

Also, it would grieve me to pay that much money for a card with a plastic housing.

I thought the reference cooler was plastic on the outside?

The all alloy cooler that debuted with the GTX690 being reserved for only them and the titans?

If the cooler does its job and does it well... I'm not that bothered... I care more about the function than the appearance... but then I don't have a windowed case.

Although... I don't think the ACX2 cards look all that bad really.

I thought the Strix looked a bit tacky compared to the Gigabyte G1... but that was only comparative.

Quote from a 980 review...

"The heatsink shell is made from cast aluminum and an injection molded magnesium alloy, a good conductor of heat plus it helps out in isolating noise."

Having handled one personally, it really is hardware porn. A thing of beauty and design.

I think, especially for the price they charge, EVGA have really cut corners by using a crappy plastic cover.

But then I do have a windowed case, so looks are important (but not crucial) for me.

But then you get cards such as the KF2A which use better casing and cheap looking fans

That's one of the things about this card, nothing about it is cheap.

Oh, fair enough... good.

I had a GTX690, so I know how nice those coolers can be :)

But on the flip side... you will be seeing it upside down + side panel... so you want one with a nice backplate and side lighting design then :p

But, but, it has a backplate, AND side LED lighting! Win win! :D

Decided to treat myself to one of these :D http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-266-EA&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1812

The EVGA GTX 980 FTW. Now my monitors are going black and the pc is unresponsive at random intervals unless I do a hard reset/power off . Running a new/few weeks old HX1000i psu and its happening when its not under any load. PC was fine right up until the new card was installed. I think its going back for replacement asap as its 1 day old....

Out of interest do the fans spin up at 100% when you turn on your Pc till windows boots then go off. Wife has just had one and it does this, i have two Evga Superclock ACX 2.0 and they dont do it.
