Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

Not happy with it?

Thought it was faulty, which it isn't. But bought a Classified to replace it - cover me if it was. The classified is still in its box and I'm deciding if it's worth changing over and selling the FTW.

My brother in law has expressed an interest in the FTW, if he wants it then coolies it's his. If not, then I'm not sure what im going to do yet. So watch the MM, it could be listed shortly (with 5 year transferable warranty).

Thanks for all the posts RE adjusting the BIOS. I will have another read through.

On another note, my Nvidia driver keeps crashing and causing SWTOR to crash, are there any logs anywhere that might give me a clue as to why?

Just wondered has anyone used a kraken g10 on a kaf980 ?

I have two kaf2 s and the top one is hitting 75-78 degrees on stock . I can oc them to a stable 1540 but the top card is always 15 degrees more and throttles. I can't afford a full water cooling system so was wondering about the g10 and a pair of corsair 80 his .

Use a side fan, dropped my temps from 79 to 69 at load.

Awahwah you mad man :D hehe.

Doesn't your FTW clock pretty nicely?

After further testing last night looks like my core is stable up to 1582 with 4000 mem @ 1.281v.

I was starting to think 1506 was my limit but after putting it under water it behaves like a different card. Will hopefully have a chance to do more testing this evening.

Does it throttle at any point during Heaven or Firestrike? In other words shows, 1.281V at 1582 then drops to 1.240v and 1504mhz. Because that's what I'm trying to get past.

With just the power limits adjusted and temp target it always stays at 1550 and never volt drops. Really odd

Very pleased with my Asus strix 980.

With Furmark hammering both CPU/GPU my system coolant temps get up to 42C after about 20min or so.
Glad I went with the 980 over the 290X as the lower TDP is really a good fit for my rather crowded Mini-ITX build.

Well, the Brother in Law wanted the FTW after his GC died on him yesterday, as luck would have it for him. So he is buying the FTW from i and I have now installed the Classified into me machine :)

Just wanted to pick peoples noggins.

I have 2 980 gtx, a reference EVGA SC and a standard MSI reference.

I have flashed a custom bios to both and happy with the result (I extracted each bios, modified and reflashed).

I do have a question though. EVGA have sent me a new BIOS that is meant to fix the display port issue (black screen from wake up), and can easily modify and flash to my EVGA card. However, I would also like to also flash this to the MSI card (as there is no sign of a fixed Bios from them).

Im sure ive read somewhere, that reference Bios's can be flashed to other reference cards, is this correct? Both my cards have Samsung memory, the only difference is the subvendor ID as EVGA like to have their own name displayed (EVGA 3841) , while the MSI card is the generic Nvidia subvendor ID (Nvidia 10DE).

Both cards have the same Device ID, the MSI default Bios is 84.04.1F.00.02 while the EVGA default Bios (not the new one) is 84.04.1F.00.82. So both are the same apart from the last 2 digits.

All I really wanted to do is make a new custom Bios with the new EVGA Bios (with included Display Port fix) and flash to both cards.

Any ideas?

So, ASIC is 75.4%. It boosts to 1430 and the below is running at 1540 / 3850 @ 1.2v.

It is possible to flash another vendor BIOS but I wouldn't do it just in case it breaks something.

I've tried various EVGA bios on my MSI reference and not had a problem :)

No throttling Neil but I have disabled boost on mine to get around it. It downclocks and under volts when I'm not gaming or benching so that's good enough for me :)

To be honest, I even thought I saw a thread started when they first came out saying that the EVGA sc bios could be flashed to other reference cards.

Just checking bluntwrapped, but was your msi reference Samsung memory? Did you have to use a -6 flag on nvflash or did the card flash without any vendor mismatch?

I've already taken the plunge and flashed my own custom bios to the msi card, (and EVGA) but just wanted to have the same base bios for the cards. I can't belive I thought I'd seen mention of cross bios reference flashing before I got my cards and new they all seemed to have disappeared.

Out of curiosity, if a bios flash went wrong, do manufacturers have a chargeable service to correct or is the card dead?

It can, nothing to worry about :) Theres a huge thread over on the overclock forums with members using the OP's custom reference EVGA bios on their reference cards. I'm pretty sure the updated and modified EVGA bios has already been posted there. Yeah Samsung Mem. I have always used the -6 flag when flashing so not certain but after looking at both I'd expect the EVGA bios to throw up a vendor mismatch. As long as your card has power there's no reason why you can't recover from a bad flash. Boot into Windows on either your igpu or spare card and flash the stock rom back. There's a guide up on the same forum as above.

Cheers for the info, I've been watching and reading the overclock.net forums for a while. I used their guide to make my custom Roms. It's just they are very much against direct flashing if the ops bios' due to the many different configs of cards. So just wanted to get second opinions before u tried!!

It's probably more to do with if they encouraged it someone would flash the classified bios to their reference card and brick it. The SC bios I tried on mine was 84.04.1F.00.86. Didn't have any problems with it.

Bluntwrapped ^ :p

I'm I pressed with the Classified so far. It's currently at 1560 with no voltage increase and 110% power. I've pulled the BIOS of it and at 125% power it's permitted to draw 330watts. I can only image what it would do under water.... Must not spend any more money.
