Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

They'll work together just fine, but bear in mind that they'll only clock to the lowest clocking card unless you use Afterburner etc. A...

No they don't, since 2009 nVidia's Forceware driveres have supported different clock speeds between different manufactured cards. There is no downclocking - for the last 6 years the cards will operate at their independet clock speeds. I have run mixed cards with different clock speeds for years and no issues.
Tomorrow I'll be running Asus GTX 980 Strix and Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming.

I will be joining the 980 gang by the end of the week. I have always been team red, is there anything specific I should be doing at all upon setup?

I am getting the Galax 980 SOC :D

Should I sell my GTX 780 for about £140-160 and buy a GTX 980 as I can't justify £550-600 for a 980 Ti, Which is the best version of regular 980's?

They come with Metal Gear Solid: Phantom pain, I will most likely buy this game anyway.

980's are around 350 400 new.

What res you play at? Personally i am waiting till pascal comes to upgrade my 780 which every game i play is fine at 1080p.

Ah ok, Mine is 120hz and performance is fine although i have overclocked the card a bit 100mhz on core and 250mhz on memory.

I'm thinking it's worth it as it would be like a £165 upgrade with a game that I want, I like to play on high FPS with the maximum settings that I can get.

I gave in and bought the 980 on the weekend deal, MGS is £46 just now so I figured £300 ish isnt bad for this card. Not had the green team for years.

Was it worth it? I'm thinking of doing the same thing

Well worth it.
I put the FTW in late last night. No time to play realy but both cards @1417 whereas I card was @1534. GPU load on both 99% FPS at the same settings did drop below 55. It kept at 57 58 59. This in the Whitcher 3. Will have a proper play over the week end.:D

Ok

I have had enough

I need to stop my card down volting below 1 volt. If that means a bios flash, so be it.

So any advice would be helpful

Also

If I Kboost my card to 1500 MHz, should I ensure I remove it after each game session? if not (I forget) what is the long term damage?

You'll want to keep the card undervolting while not using the 3D profile.

Kboost should only effect 3D clocks, I could never get it working properly with my card but it's probably been updated since I last had a play.

It won't cause any damage if you leave it switched on.

I've edited my bios to disable boost, the 3D clock is a static 1531.5 with set voltage.

If you can tell me what you need I might be able to help.

i need to replace the thermal tape on my stock 980,it doesnt look like its been put on right and only noticed when fitting a cpu water block on it,so choices are either replace the thermal tape or use some heatsinks on the vrm's.

any ideas what thickness tape i need please to replace the stock stuff?

Pretty sure they use a mix of 0.5mm and 1mm pads depending on which component is covered.
