Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

Strange, they are faster, what's the rest of your spec? tried using DDU and doing a fresh install of drivers?

btw, run some proper benchmarks.

I have run Unigine Heaven, and it's still weaker than my 780tis

And even so, I don't care too much if the benchmarks are better if they underperform in the games I play. Particularly the game I was trying to make run even better.

Rest of spec currently is 32GB 1866mhz RAM, i7 4770k stock (Still need to reapply my overclock, was at 4.3 before), Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC Force motherboard...

The only thing I can think now is that the 780tis I have are Gigabyte GHz Editions, where as I have Inno3D Reference 980s, but I wasn't expecting such a huge difference between the two.

Hey all, anyone running reference 980s in SLI, have they removed the small part of the backplate? if so, does it make a difference at all?

Hey buddy , having such a massively overclocked ti 1200mhz proved a headache for me (780ti DHS), I decided going from an overclocked ti to a reference 980 was a No no. So I've waited for the airboss hopeeing this will be faster . Clock for clock the ti is going to be the faster card , but the 980 should reach higher clocks . I think it's somewere between a 150-200mhz that the 980 needs to be clocked at higher compared to the ti in order to be faster

Having a weird bit of OCing with my EVGA SC's. I was running the pair with 125% power limit, 250 core and 320 memory OC. And they were fine, until yesterday when Crysis 3 started to give me the old driver has failed and recovered, tried again and no problem. War Thunder today though has suddenly had a mental breakdown, where if I was in game, no problem at all. However loading the game from scratch it has a hissy fit, it was fine until today. I've had to drop the core from 250 to 160 just so it will load properly.

I'm a bit of a novice at OCing, i've done some OCing but still learning to be honest. Is there a reason it's now just rejecting my OC?

The Overclock on the cards were just on the borderline of being fully stable.

The stock CPU clock won't be helping but realistically you should still be seeing basically a sideways move to the 980's at the very least (assuming stock clocked 780tis'). I am making the assumtion here that you are comparing both systems with the same cpu clock.

Whilst I don't have a 980 I am of the understanding that a ~1100-1150mhz 780TI will be within a margin of error of a 980 in most games*. It is not that suprising that you won't see a big performance gain (at least not on release drivers), however I would not expect to see a performance drop.

*Based on eyeballing a number of reviews and adding a rough scaling factor to the Ti.

fair enough, seems odd they were fine until the other day. But hey ho, cheers for letting me know, guess I did push the cards kinda hard.

EVGA SC here also sometimes get this, but I have put no extra voltage on the card yet.

I came across a similar situation, the screen goes a solid colour. Either pink, light yellow or grey, then I get the driver has recovered balloon appear etc. Strangely enough I manage to stay in game perfectly fine. After the recovery.

I am using MSI Afterburner. Would be interested to know if you are using Afterburner or EVGA to overclock.

I did look into it my self, but most people said makes no difference really and some people mentioned problems with getting the voltages unlocked but that could have been an old version of it.

But might give it a try, but I doubt it would make a difference, but steam achievements yo!

Gonna have to RMA my 290X Tri-X due to a faulty fan so am picking up an MSI 980 Gaming shortly. Figure it's a worthy excuse to check out the new cards out while the 290X gets sorted out and then weigh in which to keep. By the reviews looks like I'll be selling the 290X once the replacement arrives though.

Those load and idle temps are insane as are thermals!

Convenient ;)

I've got a 980 and I plugged it into my new Rampage V thing and added one of them new Intel E things and some DDR4 stuff and a new watery coolery thing and it's great in Windows 8 :)

Sometimes I feel a bit lost on these threads :(
