Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

Hi.

I collected and installed my Inno3D Geforce GTX 980 card into my computer over the weekend and the results are impressive. The card performs around 2 times quicker than my old XFX Radeon 7950 and runs much cooler too :) It looks great too inside my old Cooler Master Storm Scout case (see last picture below) although with this reference design, it only just fits in lengthwise :D When I receive my new 1440p monitor, this card is more than ready for it. Well done to NVidia.

I'm wondering now if it is time to upgrade my overclocked Intel i5 2500K processor and motherboard considering that it is limited to PCI Express V2.0. Is it worth the upgrade?

Regards

Steve

Any coil whine? What psu do you have?

Anyone know if there is a difference between PCIE x16 2.0 and PCIE x16 3.0 on a single 980? I'm still on a sandybridge system.

Also, are there any issues or bugs that I should expect with these cards? Someome mentioned a voltage lag bug?

yeah that's the theory at the moment...only seems to affect overclocking, when the card is in a less-demanding game (eg diablo 3) and is running in a lower power state (say around 1G) and then jumps to a higher power state (on-screen explosion for example) it doesn't seem to make the transition properly and causes a driver reset. the theory is that it's not increasing the voltage quickly enough to match, but it could just be a driver bug. it's hard to tell because i'm only logging through AB and it logs every second, whereas the power states and core clock can change a lot quicker than that.

there's a different issue with sli where one card is under-utilised and under-clocked.

So I tried to RMA mine and received the following reply -

“Dear XXXX

I am afraid that coil whine is not classed as a fault as it doesn’t effect the cards performance in any way, shape or form.

Apologies if this causes a problem.

James Bailey”

If you haven’t seen my vid it’s here again - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yNFwZDxHXM

Must admit after spending £500 on a graphics card you would want it to be perfect really!

Guess I’ll have to live with it.

Just installed my MSI GTX980 gaming edition and there's no coil whine except in extremely high fps situations like menus. I've had this every card since my radeon 4870. The 980 is actually the quietest of the lot.

EDIT: Just ran some benchmarks and its still noticeable at lower fps, just lower pitched. Still, nothing unusual. It usually goes away or lessons when you break the card in.

That's a shame really. I remember Plasma TV's had the same issue, they would buzz and it would be the big ass capacitors doing it. I do remember I had a couple myself and they were very easily returned as the buzz/whine was supposed to be at a DB limit, anything over was unacceptable and was actually a fault. Spending £500 on a product you're not happy with isnt going to make you feel good, I can sort of understand the RMA decline but a real shame you cant return under DSR. Just remember this purchase in future and what sort of service you received and ask yourself if you'll buy from them again.

DSR doesn't exist, it was replaced by the Consumer Contract Regulations (CCR). That said, don't be fobbed off so quickly, I just had a card returned and refunded in full, including shipping, costs due to excessive coil whine.

What does the CCR do differently ? Has it done away with a consumer being able to return goods if they have changed their mind or not suitable ?

I'm using the test/preview version of GPU-Z and it's giving me the wrong clocks for my card. Either that or the card is clocked incorrectly, as it should have a base core clock of 1216mhz.

This is what GPU-Z is showing:

Is GPU-Z just reading it incorrectly?

Ordering my 980 this week but cant decide which one to go for :P

I have £500 budget.

im looking at the

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclock ACX 2.0 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

but still not sure weather this is best for my money?

Thanks

Have you thought about the Strix ?

Yeah i did look at the

Asus GeForce GTX 980 DirectCU II OC Strix 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

and was kinda torn between the 2 :P

really depends what you're looking for! will you overclock it? are you fussed about noise?

reviews seem to think ACX 2.0 is not the quietest...but then the boost clock is 1367 which is among the highest for factory o/cs. fwiw if you're going to o/c it yourself i'd think almost any card can hit that boost, in which case pick one that is quiet.

if you want to o/c then imo it's really just a crap shoot. all the power phases and whatever else won't make up for bum silicon.

You can still do that but the shop can now deduct a percentage from your refund, for taking the card back. Obviously if there's a fault and it can be proven by the shop, then this won't apply and you'll either get a full refund or replacement.

You are allowed to handle it just like you would in a shop. Obviously if its a boxed graphics card you would handle it like a shop so it wouldn't be unreasonable to say you can handle it outside its box.

It would be really hard for a shop to argue you've done anything different.

In this instance, there's an assumed fault.

Hi. I have heard the coil wine (or is it capacitor noise) when running one particular bench on 3dmark. It was running at over 1000 fps though! I haven't heard it on anything else so far (in games, etc.).
The PSU that I have is a 650W N/tech modular unit.
