Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

Are inno3d Any good never had one from them before only asus, evga etc

I got one when it was on sale, it's good! I did get coil whine with my old PSU however, but since switching to a gold PSU the coil whine has completely gone.

The card also comes with a nice mousepad :)

Anyone having any problems with 344.16 drivers?

Was running the unigine valley benchmark before and screen suddenly froze. Mouse cursor was frozen too, but did move every few seconds. Audio was still running but seemed to loop occasionally. Had to do a hard reset in the end.

Ive ran it again with no problems, and I've not had issues in any other programa yet. Wondering if its a driver issue.

Do you guys use any driver cleaner program when installing new card? I simply uninstalled the previous 344.11 drivers from windows control panel, removed my old 780, installed the 980 and the installed the 344.16 drivers. This is what I normally do. Is it possible that leftovers from the old drivers are causing problems?

Heres a real noob question, I have never OC'd a recent GPU

Im currently playing with my 980 (MSI gaming)

Can someone give me some quick steps as to what I should be doing?
Ive set the pwer limit to 122% in afterburner and have been upping the core bit by bit whilst running heaven.
So far Im at 1575mhz and its fine on stock volts, TDP hovering around 103% and its not declocking at all, how do you know when its at its limit?

ta :)

aha found the core one myself, it whitescreened at 1600mhz, dropped it to 1580 and its fine after 1hour of heaven so far.

So I tried to RMA mine and received the following reply -

“Dear XXXX

I am afraid that coil whine is not classed as a fault as it doesn’t effect the cards performance in any way, shape or form.

Apologies if this causes a problem.

Regards

James Bailey”

If you haven’t seen my vid it’s here again - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yNFwZDxHXM

Must admit after spending £500 on a graphics card you would want it to be perfect really!

Guess I’ll have to live with it.

I started by saying its a fault if it's audible easily, if so we will class it as a fault and RMA it for you. :)

As an official statement to stop people quoting bits here and there this is our official policy on coil whine below:-

OcUK will accept an RMA for a card which has coil whine in extreme circumstances which we consider to be audible on a quality single rail PSU of gold rating or higher. Audible as in coil whine in normal usage and gaming which is audible above case fans in a closed case. Coil whine in benchmarks is not considered as a fault. It's not actually a fault in the hardware as such if a card whines, it is inherent in graphics card design, but we will class it as a fault for cards which are clearly audible in normal usage (gaming). For example two identical cars, one will consume upto 1l of oil every 1000 miles and the other one consume nothing, this is not considered a fault by the manufacturer and it is operating within specification.

It is a fault, Gibbo clearly states this. .

:)

Come on Gibbo, tell your staff coil whine is a fault... It's especially erksome if people have paid tons of money to have a product that's making a racket like that when the only thing you should hear is the fan :(. The reason I'm moaning is at some point I'll want one and I'll want to be reassured it can be returned if it whines like a cat

Got my 980 from OCUK, no coil whine at all, clocks to 1500mhz core and epic performance. Tis a beauty (:

Thought I would add that to play devil's advocate vs the small minority that do have coil whine.

Its subjective, people expecting no coil whine under any circumstances need to send their card back and go for integrated instead. I have never had any card from either AMD or NV which does not coil whine at higher fps.

Same here! Chuffed :)

Reference cooler hits 80C at the default 50% fan speed. I set up a fan profile for 65%, never passes 60C now.

Crysis' main menu, 5000+ FPS and not a whisper.

Agreed, I've had it from both camps especially on the high end cards. Swapping out the Psu as cured it in most occasions or just lessened over time. The biggest offenders were 7970's which I had a number of.

I will soon be joining you guys due to a wonderful misprice on a competitor's website :D. Been dispatched and should be here Friday. Can't wait!

It came :D

Spray painting a rigid PCB bridge using Plastikote matte black also looks swish and nice and cheap too :D

You're paying for the cowling over the same PCB.

Should I resend my RMA request again?
