NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

Well I've had a Gigabyte Gaming OC 5080 since 31/1, I got lucky on launch day at the other place.

I'm loving it. I'm revisiting games and enjoying the higher framerates.

It overclocks really well too. I've gained over 10% in all games. I got it stable at 3220mhz, but it was drawing over 400w and getting a bit noisy (yet still only around 64c).

I've dialled it in with an undervolt, now it's drawing about 280w, a shade under 3100mhz with zero loss of performance, sub-60c and quiet. So there are diminishing returns with overclocking, unless you're chasing a fat Steel Nomad score.

I swear I recall you was going to get a AMD 9070 XT. What happened?

At this rate AMD delaying is going to mean single digit market share unless they price it very competitively (i.e. the way cards should be priced and not looney nvidia prices).

I'm not ruling it out! I was in a position to get a 5080 at a non-scalper price and I did so knowing I'd get the performance I'm looking for.

If the 9070xt is a winner I'll get one and likely get my money back on the 5080. If it's priced in line with current GPU prices then I'll have made the right decision, given I'd have to wait months for a 5080 or pay daft prices for one.

AMD delaying won't have done much, it's not like many people are actually able to buy an Nvidia GPU. In fact RDNA3 cards are selling out now

Can't see you getting a 9070xt now tbh. But let's see :D

I might just get a 5070ti to tide me over until the 60 series. Hopefully Nvidia see sense and go back to better onboard power management and we get a new cable (lol). Sod it, just release a 5080 Super with 2x8pin.

Any indication supply will be any better or pricing for that matter?

I'm waiting for the 9070xt but put in a preorder for a zotac 5080 solid for £1050, though its £100 over msrp the cooler seems more solid than the FE one and worth the increase. If the 9070xt isn't worth it I'll keep my preorder otherwise I'll cancel it. However, if i manage to get a decently priced 4090 i probably go for that instead.

The 5080 seems more like what a 5070 should have been and i can see a 24gb 5080 super/ti making the rounds within the year, but coming from a 4060 it should still be a massive leap.

I mentioned it many pages back, but I have stuttering in Helldivers 2 and big FPS drops in Darktide with my 5080 paired with a 5800X3D. In the latter when I do the GPU usage drops to as low as mid 50%, which is odd as it was smooth with my 6800XT, albeit at much lower graphics settings.

I tried them both in my mates system with a 7800X3D and they were smooth as butter, so it appears to be a CPU limitation. As both were smoother with the AMD card I can only assume it's either Nvidia's overhead in CPU limited scenarios or some software I have running, but I'd lean towards the former as I don't have much installed. Definitely pushing me towards a platform upgrade!

Potentially useful information, my friend's 7800X3D system has a 650W EVGA Platinum rated PSU and it ran without a hitch! Granted, the games above we tried aren't the most GPU intensive out there, but we still saw power draw well over 300W. I wouldn't recommend it with an Intel CPU, but a good 650W can clearly cope.

Maybe try a fresh windows install before the platform change? Just to rule out any software problems.
