NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

At this rate by the time my card arrives, Jenson is going to jump out the box, punch me in the face and run off.

I’ll upload photos of the bruises, describe the situation and ask:

“Not sure if this is normal / needs an RMA?”
“Yeah seems a little underwhelming - RMA.”

I’ll send the photos to the manufacturer:

“Hey - this happened, can you fix it?”

“Sure, just need to ask some preliminary questions! What cable did you use?”

“Uh, I didn’t get that far.”

“I’m sorry, we can’t help you - the card must only be used with the cable supplied. Have a nice day. Good luck!”

You got a 5090 yes, but did you get an actual 5090 or a Zotac 5090?

"This is an issue with quality assurance at both NVIDIA and Zotac"

That's a huge assumption from TPU. Who's to say this wasn't deliberate?

With that drop ROPs and power limiting to avoid a melted connector, the 5090 is 10-15% faster than a 4090, lmao.

Should test even lower, several engineers state the connector shouldn't be allowed to operate higher than 360w, limit both cards to that and check perf.

Off the top of my head, a 360w 4090 will still have 97% of its base performance; I'm guessing the 5090 wouldn't be so lucky

Imagine the less aware that just plug and play wouldn't be any wiser

There is a user on TPU forum who has the Zotac issue. He claims to have tried a bios from another Zotac card that doesn't have the issue but it didn't fix it. However he says if he uninstalls all Nvidia drivers from the PC, then the card's ROP count changes to the correct value, but after he installs an Nvidia driver the ROP count decreases, which sounds weird

Very true. I wouldn't buy a 5090 and run it that power limited as it will perform 5% better than a 4090 at that point, lol. The card is junk, end of.

Interesting. I think it could be a bug that a vbios update will fix but certainly one to monitor.

Guy checks the current distribution on a brand new cable on a brand new PC and declares 5090 power draw safe. Pack it up, folks. The engineers are here to debunk all concerns (and sell you a £5k monstrosity of a pre-built). Absolutely no conflict of interest here.
Disappointing. I like Leo, but i guess you gotta do what you gotta do to get free stuff to review.

Are we just up to two 5090FE drops so far?

Still hoping to pick one up in the next few weeks, preferably before the 9950X3D drops.

If what they’ve been saying about an increase in 5090 chips is true then I guess I’ve still got a chance of snapping one up soon, but I’ve not been getting much in the way on stock alerts yet.

Looks like it's not a Zotac issue and more of an 'Nvidia selling duff chips' issue.

Best get checking your cards ;)
Was just about to post a tweet saying the same. What a complete shambles. If you have a 5090 that doesn't black screen/flicker, melt or have reduced ROPs, then you may as well go out and buy a lottery ticket tonight.

Maybe it was the 'rush' to get product out or we are seeing the defective dies land in consumer hands with the 'good' dies going into DC's.

I've just bought one. If I win I'll treat you all to a 176 ROP scalped Astral and a fire extinguisher each.
