Oblivion Peformance So Far

If you are running 1GB of ram then you will be for ever paging to disk causing this jerkiness.

2GB ram is a must to have to play the latest titles IMO.

Just because you are having problems don't blame the game.Have a closer look at your rig.

Other people are running it fine so its certainly not the game.
I have only 1Gb of ram, and there is no paging whatsoever (HD is only active when saving the game).
I know some newer games need 2Gb, but this isn't one of them.

I've been playing at 1024x768, high detail, 2xAA + Bloom, and I only get stutters when I meet monsters/npcs in lush forest areas. I have no problem in towns with lots of npcs walking about (I raised the character view distance so I can see people far away) but some characters do cause a drop in fps when they come into view.
I was standing still in the city, ready to take a screenshot, when a guard walked into view. My fps dropped from 46 to 28, then jumped back to 46 when he left the screen again. Maybe it's caused by the radiant AI kicking in?

Runs fine on my system with everything max and the beautifull SM3.0/HDR lighting. There seems to be graphical abnormalities with self shadows enabled though, probably driver related.

My only complaint is i just haven't got the required time to play it.

Eh? oblivion has now been universally slammed for poor coding on numerous forums/articles, of course its the game to a large extent. Read the elder scrolls forums and you'll see what I mean.

Ok fair enough I go on how it performs on my system.

I find it runs fine.

People have been complaining in the oblivion thread saying it runs slow etc...

When they state their rig is x2 3800 at stock with x1900 XTX.

TBH i dont know what they expect.

That cpu just isn't fast enough to run that card imo, mismatched components causing bottlenecks and lag.

The fact is people always blame the bad coding etc.....When they are running it on mediocre PC's with all the eye candy on.

This is just not possible.

If the game is badly coded then thats a problem. But has I have said Oblivion works fine on my system and many people's others.

Agreed. It certainly doesn't look like a badly coded game on my system either :)

Like Sir Random, i have 1gig of ram too.

Interesting reading people!

My two pence worth -

AMD 3700+ CPU at stock
Leadtek 7800GTX Extreme Edition at stock
1GB OCZ 3500 RAM not overclocked

1024x768 resolution with all setings maxed out with HDR on
Mainly fluctuates around 25fps to 50 fps, which is OK for me
Had about 2-3 occassions where it dropped to 18fps for a couple of seconds, which I can forgive for this type of game.

I dont get stuttering, and the load times for entering new areas are instant, get the message but no pausing.

I dont regard my system as particularly high spec, so not sure what is causing some of the problems that people with better rigs are experiencing?

Yes, that may be true, but it doesn't mean that the people making the accusations actually know what they're talking about!! It runs fine on my rig - even better now I've tweaked some of the settings. If it was *that* badly coded it would run awfully no matter what.

Joker is running dual 512MB 7800's in SLI and his performance still sucks in places. That's bad coding, and some of this poor performance is due to be fixed in a patch later on.

I agree, I have a 7800GT and run at 1280*1024 and I have yet to see a framerate lower than 24fps and that is with walking outside in grassy areas and fighting.

It's not an ideal framerate but for a RPG it's fine, I did do the iMinGrassSize=80 to =160 tweak and the Coolbits tweak though and not every bar is maxed but I have fiddled with them so it still looks very good and performance is much better.

will this play at 1680 x 1050 on a 20" widescreen?

I'm playing Oblivion at 1680 x 1050, on the rig specified in my sig and I'm getting low 20s-40s outside and 70-100 plus indoors. This is with everything turned on and HDR. It can drop to below 20 sometimes in a fight. :/

SLI does make a difference but the game appears to be very heavily CPU dependant outdoors. The wavy grass is a real system killer.

Must admit mine seems to run fine as well..Ultra High with HDR, & max rendering set..Yet to see it drop below 30fps outside, which is acceptable for this genre.

Running at 1680x1050 @ stock on system in sig...Seems to be more of an issue with the NVidia cards for some reason? No idea why though tbh.

Wow, thanks to this thread, I'm now playing at 1600x1200 :D.
There are lots of posts saying the game is cpu limited, and that lowering the resolution doesn't improve performance, so I figured that raising it might not decrease performance. I tried raising mine from 1024x768 to 1600x1200 and I've only lost about 5fps :).
I started playing the game at 1024x768 (all high settings) and the fps was acceptable. I just assumed that 1280x1024 would be unplayable and 1600x1200 a slideshow, but there's not much drop at all. I may have to turn off 'shadows on grass' in forest areas, but it's playing fine so far in Imperial city/waterfront and indoors.

I'd reccommend to anyone who hasn't tried a higher resolution to give it a go, you might be surprised! :)

the crashes annoy me more than the poor performance - i don't think i've gone further than 30 mins without a crash after 14 hrs play (sometimes several in a few mins).

the sheer number of people having problems with this game show it is badly encoded/optimised whether it runs on your own personal system or not.

when it works it is an awesome game though.

Run starforce removal tool. Starforce is known to cause crashes with this game.

I haven't had a single crash yet (playing every day since launch). My g/f's rig hasn't crashed either (9800XT) and she plays it every day too.
However, sometimes we both get the "This program has performed an illegal operation" message when we exit the game, but that's not a problem.

I got crashes before i removed Starforce from my system, not had any since.

Took your advice about running 1600X1200...it's true there's no noticeable performance loss for me either! Looks stunning with 16X AF and HDR :D

Running an x1900xtx, btw.
