I'm after a bit of advice. I've never been to a gym before in my life but I'm thinking of joining one soon. I'm not a big lad and really I just want to get in better shape. This is me in my current state (for reference purposes as I'd like to see how I progress over time):

Basically I just want to know what you think my best plan of action would be.

Height: 5' 6.5" (I believe)
Weight: 70kg

It probably won't be for another few months before I get around to actually joining a gym, so I was wondering what I should do up until then. Should I run regularly, eat more and bulk up, etc.?

bloody good base to start with there, good on you for posting a pic, you will be able to look back at that in some years / months to come and see some good progress :]

There are quite a few good sites online that talk about exercises you can do at home, there are also some rather good clips on youtube for home workouts (that require minimal equipment).

Good luck :]

Just a quick question: has anyone got a link to a youtube video or whatever that shows good form on T Bar rows? They are doing their job but seeing as i do all my work outs from home im never sure about form.

Thanks in advance.

So i've got 'round to uploading pics!! I've been seriously training/diet/supplimenting since about last September.

I go to the gym 3/4 times a week, but I'm in the process of changing my programme to get some new gains and focus on bettering my abs.

When I started I weighed 65kgs, (i'm 5'11 by the way)
Could only bench 50kg, and could only bicep curl 15kgs on each arm

I now weight 73kgs, (i'm still 5'11 :p)
I can bench 75kgs, although my last benchpress max was 83kg
I am now bicep curling 22kg in each arm.

I've neglected my legs and lower body and this is the next area of conquest for the next 6 months. I'm happy with my back, but feel my shoulders need some work.

Any tips or advise guys....

I'm a bit annoyed I havent got pics from when I first started training to show the improvement.

Apart from the obvious removal of back hair.... ;) Would you say I have made progress since my first pictures?

To give you a flavour, I'm now hovering around 97.5kg (first thing in the morning) - just about 6'1". (1m85 in fact).

Bicep: over 17"
Chest: over 46"
waist: 34-35"
Thighs: 26 1/4 "
Neck: 18"
Calf (though there's no pic): just over 16"
Forearm: 13 1/4"
How did I manage to miss these pics first time round???

Dude you're looking awesome and I must say you look bigger than your measurements!!!

Sexeh beast!! ;):D

Just find some weights and start lifting them. Read Gordy's sticky! Its very good advice and will explain all you need to begin :)

The measurements were a few weeks before the pics were taken but they're relatively accurate I think... on a few of them I did say "over" because I couldn't remember what they were! lol! But thanks mate - always appreciate the feedback :D

They're up on ESN as well you know ;) :p

edit: **** me I must have used dodgy scales as I've just weighed in at over 101.5kg!!! Ok it is night time... but that's a scary number! lol!

David - you've got a great base there. It depends what you want and where you want to go from there. Your chest and shoulders need development in my opinion, your back looks good though, maybe a bit more trap work might be an idea.

Once you start developing your legs, especially with squats or any compound exercise your core strength will increase meaning all the big compound exercises will become bigger and better - you're definitely at a good stage of development, very low BF - you could probably get away with a bit of bulking. However putting on nearly 10kg is great work! I've put on close to 15 since I started, it's hard work, but the result have paid off! :)

Freefaller - what are the best trap exercises? I'm well read in exercises (mens health has been a bit of a bible since I started as well as here and the internet) and diet, but i do need to be more strict with myself when it comes to what I eat and when I eat it.

As far as bulking is concerned I've dipped in and out of it.

I'm looking at making more of my chest, my lifts are big (for my size & weight) but I want to put more mass and shape on it. Currently I'm doing flat/decline/incline bench press and flys. What else can I do?

I know other exercises such as dips, reverse dips etc work chest muscles, but are there any other big exercises I can do to put mass on it?
