OcUK Forums Changes

I think these forums are just about right.

However, I've never understood why you can sell computer related products in MM and not other stuff, you would think it would be the other way round since its basically doing OCUK out of money.
My suggestion is to sell stuff other than computer parts.

That's quite funny considering your signature is 5px over the limit.

Christ is it? I'll fix that. I swear I read the limitations as what I've currently got. Sorry

Edit: fixed. Cheers for that :P

I just think that it would just cause more Megzy's and "hi i'm a girl" threads (yes i know the irony of me saying that after my forum entrance but hopefully i've grown up since then). :p

For those who want and 18+ thread how would you moderate that? How do you make sure they are over 18, it is easy to type in a date of birth.

A few more fields in Trust would be nice- Phone & address :)
Shouldn't be difficult to implement, and while verification isn't necessarily possible by the Dons, it adds that extra layer of security.

Also, how about the ability to disable sig display full-stop from the User CP? I know PHPBB3 has this ability, and it would allow for the relaxation of the sig rules a bit. I've personally got no objection to a minor bit of animation, but equally, flashing things get adblocked :p

More avatars- Definitely needed, shouldn't be hard to implement either.

Final one- Some relaxation of the shop threads rule can only be a good thing in my book. As a customer, I'm far happier seeing a problem thread on a forum, which is then publicly resolved, than when these types of things are 'swept under the carpet' so to speak- I'm not suggesting that this is what happens, but thats the impression that it gives when a rant thread suddenly dissapears.

I mostly enjoy these forums, however there's one thing about these forums which really annoys me, bullying (to a point) is rife on these forums, take the whole topics pointed at Angus Higgins, he got/gets tortured about his posting style and at least 10 people in a certain thread jumped on the bandwagon to take the mickey out of his style, there have been other examples but can't think on top of my head.

I also agree with members market opinions, should be at the very least 6 months of being a member to post there.

A laptop section as mentioned would be good.

I'll stop now :)

Then its not OCUK's fault if people below 18 do that, OCUK wouldn't be liable if a minors parents tried to complain or anything.

And it is just you being miserable G|mp, SA is the best sports forum I visit due to its diversity and knowledgable members who on the whole are a pretty decent bunch, I'd say leave it as it is:)

I just want a football forum i think :/

Cricket gets on my nerves as well, but you know full well that gayers like Cricket :D

ONE REQUEST: please don't let these forums change in to one that's like every other forum on the internet! These ones have a LOT of good things going for them that shouldn't be altered. Namely:

Avatars left alone. It's almost a trademark of these forums.
Sig size left alone. People that express their 'need' bigger ones should be ignored!

Suggestions:
Linking your profile to the shop's hardware (or even your actual shop account)- this is a big deal i think and could help, even if only a little, sales. How this would work with hardware you stop selling i don't know.

Having a hardware specs link (related to above suggestion) that can be accessed on the same menu you get when clicking on a user's name. I wouldnt use it myself, but i can imagine many would. Perhaps have a benefit of completing this section, thus linking back to shop items...maybe additional avatars to choose from??

More control over threads you start. Being able to close them, remove posts. Empowering the OP with some self-moderating would, hopefully(!), help ease the mods' workload. Trial it perhaps. Possibly have it give to select members who show some level of responsibility. I know if i started a thread and it started to be derailed i would be in there like a shot - primed example would be my PGR 4 thread that was removed.

You've got a massive opportunity to do something quite special with these forums and the shop. Good luck!

I can't see that happening. If you get banned for something considered fairly minor and then spend the next year or more being as hateful as you possibly can, then is that the type of person who would want to post here again? Put a few of these people together and it gets (and has got) totally out of control.

Fair enough - although I'm sure there must be a fair few people who got in a tiff with someone, got banned, regret their actions and haven't subsequently slagged the forum off in any way.

There are probably some of the poor souls reading this post right now, guests, doomed to wander the ether account-less for all eternity. :p

you don't moderate it thats the point , and anyone who enters does so at there own risk dissolving responsibility from the owners of the site and onto their parents.

You could say the same about porn websites. ;)

I guess it'd have to be on request and you'd have to just accept a T&C saying that you are 18+ and that you don't hold anything against OcUK for what you about to see/read blah blah etc etc.

These forums are great. It would be a sad day if rules where slacker. It's one thing that makes these forums so good.

This man speaks the truth, the rules should definitely not be relaxed, I hope I don't get into trouble for this but I would have said only not so long ago that It would be better if you (Spie) wasn't as strict when it came to criticism and wasn't so quick to permaban users upon disagreements but I've honestly noticed recently you've seemed to of relaxed and are more accepting in regards to opposing opinions, the recent Sambo thread you created for example, not so long ago you would have deleted/locked that thread when people disapproved but you stood your ground and argued your point like one of us, was good to see.

In regards to 'ladies' avatars I don't see the point really as many male users would choose to use a female avatar anyway, myself included so it just renders them pointless, controversially I also would like to see some of the old members back to add a bit of color and diversity to the place but it is a hard one as I know it's not that simple.

1. Auto-filter swear words. I don't understand why things like *** (Quoted for Truth) and *** (For the Win) are filtered but swear words aren't. Surely it would make the moderators jobs easier and the forums even more family friendly.

Yep good idea, I've often wondered why this hasn't been done before.

2. Allow OPs to close their own threads.

Ummmm, really not so sure about this one, I've in the past thought it would be a good idea but then I thought too many people might choose to close their threads as a cop-out when a debate doesn't go their way, I feel thread closure outside of MM should be the moderators domain.

3. Automatically remove posts after they receive a certain amount of RTMs. I don't know if it would be possible but it could help to get rid of some of the less friendly posts.

This I'm not so sure of either as you could find people abuse the system by getting other members to rtm a thread from a disliked poster knowing that the thread would be deleted without a fair evaluation.

Ah another thing I'd like to be able to do is to edit my thread title. Sometimes if there's a word missing - or a spelling mistake it's not left permanently.

I've thought about this before too, and I *think* I agree with you.

I do, however, think that we should be able to rename our threads. I.E. When it's an ongoing project and you bump it with a date + updated in the title so people know it's not just a necro-post.

Some easy way to automatically edit out swears and competitors. So saves time for it to be done by hand (or mouse).

Would like to see more avatars says the good guys at 100, 500 etc to reflect the bad guys. Perhaps some ones from the Untouchables (like Connery, Costner, Garcia,).

How about a new ranking for longstanding/old school members?

To help distinguish old school members from those "spamming youngsters"? :)
