*** Oculus Quest 2 Owners Thread ***

The 500 is the encoding bit rate of the video not the total transfer of data both ways. Plenty of people now suffering with increased stuttering that were fine before since the update has increased the bandwidth. Admittedly I plucked the 2.3 number out the air but I’d imagine there is a good reason why a USB 3 port is required and not a USB 2.

I agree. USB 2 ports support upto 480mbs. There's a big difference between 480mbps and 2.3gbs. I didn't pluck the 2.3 number out of the air. It's what I'm seeing in my test on the oculus software. With people reporting 2.6-3 for the official cable.

What exactly are you arguing? Because you started off saying the unofficial cables are the problem, now you've jumped to usb 2.

And where are the people suffering with stuttering, using a 3rd party cable, that have now switched to the official and are running fine again?

I am quite surprised by the varying experiences people are having with the USB 3 cables. They will work for a period of time, then they will stop working. Some work flawlessly, some never work. What is the reason for this? Cheap cables? Although £30 for a cable doesn't seem that cheap to me.

this thread is now littered with people having issues especially since the update that massively increased the bandwidth requirements compared to that of the Link Beta, I’m guessing that people with the cheaper Chinese Dave specials are now struggling especially with 90hz and the increased resolution rendering. I get people have alto defend their purchases but logically with this many issues then it’s all pointing to one thing. Same goes for people who were also previously fine using USB 2 in the Beta. I can’t categorically prove any of this of course but just using the problem solving part of me nuggin. I’m not a PC tech head so I could be talking complete tripe.

look buddy I’m not here for an Internet forum dick swinging competition I’m merely pointing out the fairly obvious and most likely candidate for people’s woes. If you have a alternative theory or suggestion then obviously feel free to crack on.

My first guess actually would be that their graphics cards aren't good enough to drive 90hz and full resolution, compared to what was a lot easier process before the update. Without examples of people going from 3rd party usb 3 cable to official oculus cable, and their problem being solved, I don't really see why that's being viewed as the problem. Especially when we have examples of people using 3rd party cables and saying it's all good.

EDIT - The other suspect for me is people have actually been usb 2, which would have been fine with the original bitrate, but find the new one problematic.

I feared this would be a problem too.. cables which worked on on quest 1 hitting the ceiling with Q2... However with many peoples issues (including mine) it's not just stuttering it is the headset randomly disconnecting often after a really positive start. I had 2 hrs in elite D and it was flawless.

Today 10seconds and disconnect. Could it be cheap cables? Maybe , but I never thought I would be accusing a £30+ 5m usb cable of being "cheap" ;)

Yeah. Interesting point about the upped requirements for the cables since the update.

But post update, as some have experienced, you wouldn't expect them to work at all, never mind working for a few hours and then stopping.

The cables advertise 5gbps speeds on all of the listings! Looks like they're getting nowhere near that.

The speeds are always best case scenarios :D, I'd never believe them!

Seeing plenty of reports from people with the official cable getting blackouts too. My guess is there's software/driver issues.

So far the only people I can relate to are myself (official cable) no problems at all and also my friend has the anker USB C-C with right angle bend in it who also has no issues. I believe that cable was on Amazon for £30ish but maybe now sold out. My neighbour bought a £28 off Amazon titled “compatible with Quest/Quest 2 ) and it doesn’t work. When she tries the oculus app USB speed test it shows as USB 2.0 and 480 speed. In general most people can get away with cheaper USB leads when they are 0.5m and 1m but as soon as you add 5m length and the flexibility requirement (generally unshielded cable) into the mix then that’s a whole different ball game.

Max length for an non active USB3 cable is 3m. (i.e one without any electronics to improve the signal).
Over 3m you need an active cable or a fibre optic cable to get a reliable signal.

Has she tried the official cable in the same USB slot? USB 2 maxes out at 480, it may be she's got a problem with her USB socket, not her cable.

I'm at a point now where I feel the weak link is the cable. So, any more suggestions for a USB A - USB C cable for my Oculus? 3 down, however many more to go.

This is the one I'm using, despite the random brand name it's all good, it comes up as USB3 with speed of around 2.3Gbps, I've used it several times over the last few days without issues.

I had a Rift S. Is Quest 2 a downgrade in graphics quality? Does Alyx look as good?

With the new link functionality it blows the Rift S away, but you'll need a good GPU to be able to drive it effectively at the higher resolution.

For native games, the graphics quality is downgraded, but wireless makes a huge, huge difference.

Thanks. GTX 1070 at the moment, considerig a RX 6800 when avaialble.
