Oculus Rift

hoping crossfire 280x and a I7-3770K is enough... my 3rdmark smashes the recommended spec so fingers crossed...

Totally depends on the game. Demos and stuff will be fine. Elite Dangerous is ok on medium on a single 280x and still looks great. Crossfire 280x (my setup) currently introduces enough latency to ruin the experience.

There are various things in the SDK/driver pipeline that will enable effective multi-GPU rendering but nothing supported as of yet AFAIK.

I am hoping the pre-orders ship soon after. At least we get to see the price today and I do hope there is plenty of dev support going forward. This is one tech I have a lot of time for.

Wondering if my setup will be ok... At present it will be a bit stuttery but when they enable SLI I am hoping it will be ok.

I believe they are looking at getting SLI/CF working per eye (which reduces latency), so you won't be getting ~double the frames like traditional SLI. This makes more sense as well and they have stated the minimum is a 970. I would wait and see if I was you.

Thanks Gregster. I would have had a 980Ti to run one on by now but with the release of the new gen Nvidia cards this year, I am holding out for a 10**Ti. ;)

Kinda interested to see what the price will be like for this. I mean I'm 99.99% certain that I'll just hit that pre-order button regardless, but I'm kinda expecting ~£350 for it.

Just wondering will we feel dizzy like watching 3d movie

Thats subject to each person who uses it. From the DK2 I've been using a while it hasn't caused any nausea effects as long as its setup properly (fits correctly and game running at the correct fps) but it is a lot more jarring once you take the headset off.

I found it uncomfortable to use for more than an hour, not during use but after removing the headset as it takes a while to readjust. I'm sure this experience is 10x better in the final product due to the higher refresh rates, lighter headset, higher res and better optics but it will still be jarring after extended use especially for the first few weeks of use until you become accustom to VR.

I'll probably end up ordering the Rift but I think its going to be pretty pricey. I would say £450+

Is there any consensus on rift vs. vive vs. others?

Nope. All that is known is that the Vive comes with controllers and will be more expensive - and despite the raving fanbois from either end hating the mention of it the Vive will be better at a standing experience whilst the Rift (whilst capable of a similarish experience if you got another tracking camera) will be better at the seated experience.

My money is on the Rift in the short term because of the amount of backing it has, the geniuses in the field working on it and the sheer momentum plus im mostly interested in flight sims and the like. Im guessing around the £400 mark!

Basically, Vive if you have a big space and want to be wandering around, or Oculus if you're happy sitting or standing in a smaller space.

Display, tracking etc, neither is particularly better than the others. They're all version 1 products with limited res and little support, usual early adopter caveats apply.

I'm chuffed to bits with Oculus, I was a backer of the original in Kickstarter. Yesterday I received my email confirming they'd be sending me a retail one with both games for free!! Awesome stuff as I just got made redundant and wasn't going to pre-order one, now I don't have to worry about that :D

Mate, great news im well jealous of the original backers but those that did laid the path for where we are now so its a just reward! What was your number?

Thanks mate, I kinda feel like I'm getting my money back almost. My backing cost me $530, which was the original DK rift, t-shirt and signed poster from the development team. I'm hoping one day (if I look after it) it may be worth something.
Can't wait to try the retail one :D
