Oculus Rift

I'm chuffed to bits with Oculus, I was a backer of the original in Kickstarter. Yesterday I received my email confirming they'd be sending me a retail one with both games for free!! Awesome stuff as I just got made redundant and wasn't going to pre-order one, now I don't have to worry about that :D

Ahhh that's great news about the Rift and sorry about the job :(

Nope. All that is known is that the Vive comes with controllers and will be more expensive - and despite the raving fanbois from either end hating the mention of it the Vive will be better at a standing experience whilst the Rift (whilst capable of a similarish experience if you got another tracking camera) will be better at the seated experience.

My money is on the Rift in the short term because of the amount of backing it has, the geniuses in the field working on it and the sheer momentum plus im mostly interested in flight sims and the like. Im guessing around the £400 mark!
Interesting, thanks for the info. I definitely don't know enough either way to shell out £400 willy nilly.

Thanks Gregster. I would have had a 980Ti to run one on by now but with the release of the new gen Nvidia cards this year, I am holding out for a 10**Ti. ;)

Yeah im doing the same my 970 will last till then and hope it doesn't lose too much 2nd hand value by the time we get the 10*

pretty excited about this. i almost bought a monitor over christmas, but not doing that makes this already planned purchase a little easier to palette.

I just have to talk the other half round to me buying a £600 GPU and £400 Rift... guessing its going to be around a £1000 worth. :/ wish me luck. lol

yeah it aint good not already having the gpu grunt.

mate at work has twin 7970s...but relying on crossfire isnt a good plan.

A GTX 970 overclocked to 980 levels will be fine, but I'll admit I am tempted to swap to a 980Ti, so you could cut a lot off that £1000.

I think I'll stick with my 970 and see how that fares. The fact that Oculus specifically recommends it for the "full" experience rather than a minimum gives me hope, plus FWIW my 3DMark score is about 1.5K above the Oculus spec score. If it turns out OK I'll then more than likely wait until the next big round of cards and upgrade then.

I was thinking the same but by the time you sell the 970 for 200 and then stick in another 250 for a ti you might as well wait for the new cards around the 500 mark but risking the chance your 970 will be worth less.

My i5 3570k handles the dk2 fine, but the min specs for the CV1 are higher. Going to have to see if ill upgrade it - my gpu is fine, 970, but maybe its time to up the cpu power.

Can't you just swap the graphics card out under the cover of darkness? I may definitely haven't done this before ;)

Palmer Tweeted some interesting things last night:

  • Pre-ordering a Rift gets you a spot in the first Touch pre-order list
  • They wont take any money until it ships
  • He also mentions again that the Rift price is subsidized, meaning no Touch discount if you buy both

Tbh I'm happy they won't take the money until it ships, allows a lot more people who are interested to jump on board and plan for it coming off as I'm sure we'll get an expected shipping date.

Yup a lot more people are going to jump on with that decision, preumably youll supply card details. Im practicing mashing my f5 now.

Nice that you caan preorder and cancel later if you change your mind as they dont take the cash until they ship.

Uses 7 times the video processing power of normal 3d applications??thats how i cant see the ps4 one being any good as it will be really limited by the ps4s hardware surely?

That 7 times is probably about right for a steady 30fps on a 2d display versus steady 90fps and two viewports.

Seriously want one of these but I'm a little hessitent at selling a not very old gtx980 to replace it with something twice the price. Overclocking is a serious option but with what these are going to need for a enjoyable experience it doesn't seem like near enough. Star citizen is going to be a monster to run in VR.

I wouldn't worry about SC, the Gen2 VR headsets will probably be out before SC is released :p
