Oculus Rift

I've tried porn on the DK2, its really disconcerting.

This! I actually felt like id cheated on the missus it was messed up!

On the subject of price this is no brainer to an enthusiast with a few quid. My screen is 21:9 and 34 inches @ 3440x1440 cost a grand, my PC has 3 r9 290x's in.

I mean christ my two phones cost me £1200!! i know not everyone can chuck these numbers about, youngsters, students, etc. But lordy we arent talking a months salary here we are talking about the price of a decent coffee machine!

Haha, lord, imagine the hardware the 'performers' have to hold in place for POV VR porn.

No pun intended there.

ALSO, yes excited by the many non gaming applications of this as I have already said. I think I saw somewhere, okay there might be only a few AAA gaming titles that come out for this and are great, but I think this will be a sort of indie explosion of VR content (gaming/non gaming) once these hit. Its going to be amazing to fire it up every night and have another world to step into.

Have you ever thought about, you know, going outside?

If it helps, I don't meet the minimum requirement either :D

3930K @ 4.625 - Asus RIVF (4 USB 3 ports)

Similar for me. Same board but 3820 @ 4.75

Not worried about the CPU, as it listed it at stock speed. But I wonder if there is something dodgy about our USB controllers from asmedia, maybe they all share the same lane?

On occasion.

For real though, I've visited and done many amazing things in my time on Earth already. But this is going to let me experience an order of magnitude more.

Sunrise on Mount Everest. The inside of the CERN. An EVA from the space station. Ice caving under the moonlight and northern lights. Standing right next to the action at the World Cup Final.

Sure we do cool things like these examples in games all the time. But its got to be another thing entirely to watch VR video from these places and know that they are REAL. Since (most of us) have jobs and other constraints, there is a limit to the amount of experiences we can have of this world.

VR might not be as good as being there, but it'll be so much better than just watching a video on youtube. This device isn't for boring sods who don't know how to appreciate the world, but rather those who can't wait to look at it new ways.

These are my hopes anyway.

This is a great post and a very fair point.

While quite a few experiences are acheivable with effort, its extremely unlikely that I will get the chance to fly and F-15 or Mig-21 through the valleys of Nevada.

But £500 gets me an experience that I can reuse over and over, whilst not the same.

This post got me salivating.

*Keeps preorder*

This is exactly it.

Let hope the future is bright and promising for VR. I'm staying an optimist.... literally putting my money where my mouth is haha.

As an aside, I suspect its going to also be very powerful for story telling and empathy. Again there is a massive difference between passively watching a news story on the small window into the world that sits in your living room versus STANDING in the middle of something.

Let's say you are watching a humanitarian disaster. I know this is a massive generalisation but in the first example you think 'oh gosh that looks terrible, these people need help' and then you change switch on Netflix and your brain resets. Now imaging BEING there. Turning your head and seeing looks of raw emotion in peoples faces. Now this is 'I am standing in this. This is happening to me right now. This IS terrible.' You take off the headset but still vividly remember what the conditions looked like all around you. For a few minutes it was your reality....

The future man... this is it.

My mate told me that he tried out an OR last week in Swindon and said he was very impressed. He only decides to tell me this after I mention I've pre-ordered! :D

Well OK, let's say the Rift if £150 'overpriced'. So, in the grand scheme of things... I'm still game. This will blow over like the Facebook hysteria.

And the prices will come down eventually. It's gonna be a rough ride at first, but there's plenty to sink your teeth into in the meanwhile.

Basically, not worried. It's a shame they couldn't get a cheaper device on board, but all this conspiracy nonsense that will will no doubt hear, is basically, well, nonsense (it's a swindle, the price is hiked, facebook is Hitler, they're ripping us off, bla bla bla...). Anyone who's followed the company and bought DK's know that.

Got a Rift ordered, and I'll be playing, watching movies, YouTube, and developing on with it. And if the pre-orders go sour and don't pan out, or the Vive is a better deal, I can bail out and I still haven't lost any money either way.

Personally, I can't wait.

On that note have you tried the Apollo 11 taster demo? Absolutely brilliant for what it is, a real time launch into space, something that I think is awesome watched on TV but unbeleivable when you feel like you're sat in the capsule

Do the pre orders take cash right away?

I'm so tempted but then I think I've waited long enough so waiting until they are readily available and any potential bugs ironed out is probably a better idea.

Reddit AMA from last night with Palmer, goes some way to explaining some of the grievances. Basically hands up, they didn't do a good enough job communicating how much it would realistically be. Also touches on the XO controller being bundled, and basically it has a negligible effect on cost, so those wanting a cut-down bundle without it are probably wasting their time.

At the end of the day, the proof will be in the Vive cost. If it's the same price, or unthinkably, cheaper than the Rift, it's going to make Oculus look a bit silly.

For me, im just not sure the spec of the first round of headsets is quite there. And with a lack of games (though ill admit the kind of games i love and play will have/get support fast)

I think im going to hold out for maybe a gen2 release along with Pascal/Polaris or above cards to push it.

Still can't wait to at least try these new sets and see how they develop! very exciting times.

I'm not to bothered about the £500 price tag, but since I'd have to upgrade the PC as well, I might look out for a cheap DK2 on ebay for now and wait for gen 2 of the CV

By then we should have UK sellers as well and don't have to worry about extra import costs.

I've never been one to throw silly money at things just to be an early adopter, also it will give time for the devs to produce more and better content and resolve the issues.

I don't mind the price either considering the costs of a 3 monitor setup but I really need to try one out before I buy. Will wait until the UK retailers start stocking them as well. Surely this website will sell this?
