Oculus Rift

I am wondering about the Vive price they always stated it would be a premium product, but at the time the price point of the Rift was speculated to be around the $350-400 mark, if HTC/Valve do indeed manage to price the Vive at or lower than the now known Rift price they will win over most people with that alone.

I know the Rift hardware is costly, after all its using pretty much custom everything and not forgetting the custom made high refresh OLED panels which alone cost a decent chunk of cash. Those alone probably account for 1/3 of the over all cost.

I don't mind the price either considering the costs of a 3 monitor setup but I really need to try one out before I buy. Will wait until the UK retailers start stocking them as well. Surely this website will sell this?

Nate Mitchell mentioned in an interview yesterday that they would be doing a limited store launch in the US (and it sounded very limited) this year, so people have somewhere to go and try one.

It might be quite a while before we see full distribution via normal retail channels.

I've just seen I left the tab open from when shipping was still in March, was tempted to pre-order at work but didn't get around to it. If I pre-ordered one now would it still be under March or switch to June now? Not too fussed about pre-ordering as I have an AuraVisor due to arrive in Feb (1080p Android based VR headset, but it only cost me £120 on KS) but at the rate this is going it will probably be Christmas shipping if I ordered one in Feb if I found 1080p not enough for what I want.

Sadly, £529 here in the UK is something I can't justify. I was very close to ordering a DK2 prior to launch, but held off for the CV1, as it was reputed to be in the same price bracket, owing to the statement made by Oculus and the general consensus at the time.

I've decided to bite the bullet and purchase a used DK2, and will stump up the cash for a consumer model in a few years when the price inevitably drops.

Reddit AMA from last night with Palmer, goes some way to explaining some of the grievances. Basically hands up, they didn't do a good enough job communicating how much it would realistically be. Also touches on the XO controller being bundled, and basically it has a negligible effect on cost, so those wanting a cut-down bundle without it are probably wasting their time.

At the end of the day, the proof will be in the Vive cost. If it's the same price, or unthinkably, cheaper than the Rift, it's going to make Oculus look a bit silly.

Surprised you didnt mention the huge amount of posts which were deleted. Very draconian measures taken by mods. LP to his credit, still answered the deleted questions lol.

I think people are annoyed with the price because they either feel betrayed, lied to, or feel Oculus were not honest with them regarding the final retail cost of the CV1. To mess up that up is marketing fail 101.

If LP and Oculus were honest to begin with regarding the ballpark price then no-one would be annoyed. I'll wait for CV1 reviews and also for actual games to appear before buying...but thankfully the DK2 will help fund it :) I really hope VR doesnt die a death because of this start...and i hope people who havent tried VR but preordered a CV1 are not disappointed.

Well to help pay for my March pre-order, I have stuck my DK2 on the MM. Mrs wasn't happy when I told her the cost lol :D

Gutted but needs must and gotta keep them cooks happy :D

They can make a $450 headset though, that's clear enough. The DK2 was $350, and it's a decent base for commercial VR.

I think people expected the Rift with its fancy material, screens and optics to somehow squeeze into the price bracket. I did for a while, but it looked to be more and more expensive by the month :)

I have a June order which I'm happy with waiting for. I have the cash right now for the OR, but would need a CPU / mobo upgrade which I have till then to save up for (so it won't give me a lean month).

If the reviews between now and then are pants, I can always cancel the payment.

The DK2 was more than likely losing money on every sale. There's no walled-garden ecosystem for VR which is going to guarantee income so they can loss-lead....they have to make a profit on the hardware.

 Not sure if serious...

Funny thing is, I put one in my basket at 16:03 ish.

It didn't go through until 16:30ish with about 100 failures and a credit card decline in between.

But when it went through they still quoted March shipping, even though people in the forum were saying theirs had gone out to April/May

I assume it kept my place in the queue because I didn't ever go back in the browser or try a different card or start over.

I'm still not sure what to do here, PC gaming is my hobby and passion and I'd happily spend £530 on a display and this is essentially what this is, albeit one that offers a level of immersion no other external display can offer. However, I feel that my expectations were mismanaged as the initial estimates were $350-$400.

It's not a display, not yet. I ended up owning a friends DK2 because he bought it, all excited then felt sick whenever he used it. Having used both DK1 and 2 I'm skipping this for a few years, I didn't feel sick but I didn't find them very comfortable for gaming for more than 30 minutes at a time, that's one aspect they'll improve vastly in the next couple of versions. Then I'll jump on board, the experience is amazing though, if you have the money I'd recommend it in a heart beat - assuming your PC can cope. :D

Personally I bought a 4K 40" monitor instead and TrackIR.

Just sit and wait if you're not sure. The Vive looks to be coming out as well, so that's something else to look forward to (and will be probably, if not more expensive).

Plus reviews... Couple of months wait is worth it, especially if you are not certain of investing that much. Pre-orders are for enthusiast who already know what they want.

I have to say, I'd be shocked if the Vive was not cheaper or the same price as the Rift, based on expected retail costs.

Everyone expected the Rift to be around the 350-450 mark, HTC said it would be more than the Rift based on that assumption, so if that launches at $500-600, I and many others would probably switch orders in a heart beat. The funny thing is now though, even if they were going to launch at $450-500 they know without a doubt they could easily bump that up to $600 and still sell loads of them over the Rift.

Was worth a shot, that's why I asked.

I might want one by June so I'll place the order anyway. If I'm happy enough with the AuraVisor then I'll just cancel the pre-order.

Edit: I've just ordered mine. Receipt says March 2016 :D

Where does it say on the receipt? I can't see a date on mine.

I took a screengrab of the final screen that gave me my order confirmation. It gave a date of April 2016 on there.

Can't see any dates on actual order emails though, or even the web tracking page.

Yer, mine said March but was hoping I could see some confirmation elsewhere of shipping date. I should just chill really :D
