Oculus Rift

Thanks for answering my questions and yeah Facebook VR sounds weird. Maybe Oculus said part of the deal is that they keep their name or maybe
Facebook realized Oculus Rift just sounds better. It does sound like a cool name to me.

EDIT: Also one more thing, when you turn on the Oculus Rift, what happens? Do you just see your desktop or do you get some sort of 3D interface which lets you choose movies/games/desktop etc? I've always wondered this and not seen anything about this in the youtube videos I've watched.

When you turn on the DK2 its all messed up in portrait mode with a stretched image until it's configured :p
Even when it is, you will not just get a magical 3d desktop to use!

With Virtual Desktop however you can and it actually works very well

slightly off topic, anyone played dreadhalls on the gear vr? just played it for 15 mins and totally **** my self, let my old man have a go and he screamed haha amazing game and by far the scariest thing ive ever played

I've been trying to use FlyInside in conjunction with a leap motion. Not had the success I'd hoped for yet but need to try again since I read a FAQ on it. Trouble is I've just upgraded to P3D V3 so in the process of reinstalling.

This has been answered already by a couple people. But only for how it works *right now*.

Once CV1 launches, Oculus will have a dedicated interface for VR called Oculus Home, similar to what the GearVR has. This will be a combination store, library and general access portal for content. They've said that this is going to be easy to get in and out of, so no worry about it being some mandatory part of the experience.

Also, with regards to games that dont use Oculus Home, the Rift has a proximity sensor in it that detects when you're wearing it. It turns off when you're not wearing it.

Bit of a disappointment about his position/thoughts on games having support for multiple VR platforms.

How so? They aren't preventing devs (even oculus funded ones) from integrating steamVR support, they are also willing to give OR-SDK support to other hardware, the only restriction in place is that to get added to the Oculus store you have to include (but are not limited by) OR-SDK support

Because he believes cross VR platform games will be to exception to the rule and most wont be. I'm not apportioning blame but it is still a disappointing insight into the situation.

Yer, I think it is imperative we have cross vendor support, especially in the early days. One for one and another for another could see this damaging sales in the long run.

If anyone wants a bit of nostalgia, or wants to see how this all kicked off in 2012, I posted a list of videos on r/Oculus the other day that pretty comprehensively covers the emergence of the Rift that year.

I wouldn't be surprised, got a couple units on demo again today. There's a lot of hardware with all the lighthouse cameras and motion controllers, and HTC can't afford to be giving them away.

$1500 for a Vive?

http://www.androidauthority.com/htc-vive-price-667174/

No idea how much substance or truth is really behind that article but if it was to prove to be true , it'd be a real kick in the nuts for those who bemoaned the price of the Rift and declared that because of the price they would now wait for the Vive.

The Vive is considered to be better specced and more of a 'future' device than the Rift.
People know its going to be more, Its just how much more and whether that translates well to the retail package items.

Also that article is pure journalistic trash.

ah good good, thats ok then. I'm not interested in the Vive myself, the Rift is a better fit for my needs but I want both to do well so that the whole concept is a success.

I'm guessing the Vive is going to be in the range of £700-800 as it comes with two controllers, lighthouses and VR mounted camera. I don't think HTC will be spending as much on presentation, packaging and materials though so like for like the Vive would be cheaper but won't be sold standalone as they are pursuing the full VR experience.

I really have no idea about the Vive cost, the Rift was fairly easy to estimate, I thought it would be around the 500/550 mark and low and behold it comes out at 500+shipping which places it at 530.

The Vive though is an odd one, its cheaper for them to make, the lighthouse stations are dirt cheap, the wireless controllers are nothing special and the HMD itself is plastic and the tracking sensors are barely 50p each.

I'd be surprised if the Vive is significantly more than the Rift, I reckon it will be roughly the same or slightly more than the Rift.
