Oculus Rift

Why are you interested in knowing how other people spend their money?

Because most on here are total skinflints:) how many have bought this but refuse to pre order a game because they say no reviews are out yet, i just find it odd paying big coin out for something that is all based on hype.

The rift has been around since 2012 and a long time in development.

I bet most who have pre ordered have tried the DK1 and or 2

Do you guys really think we'll need more then 8GB of ram? or you just going to stick to 8GB? Also can anyone explain in any detail why or how Oculus games would use 16gb of ram?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I've just ordered 16gb of RAM purely for VR when I get round tp ordering a headset. The Vive seems to be 16gb as a minimum spec so I thought I'd better go for it...

Well that's a bit of a silly argument, because if a game is good, you can go out and buy it right away. There is literally no point in pre-ordering a game, as there is no such thing as supply and demand when it comes to the purchase.

The Rift however, demand is far outstripping supply at the moment, So if you did wait until it was released and read reviews, you could be looking at a 6 month wait time before you even get the hardware after ordering. I've not tried DK1 or DK2 purely as I've been waiting for the final consumer version.

I've got a similar dilemma. I want a VR Headset NOW (and I'm willing to pay) but I've got no experience of using one.

I'm waiting for the reviews of the Rift.

But more importantly, I'm waiting for the comparisons between the Rift and the Vive.

My uninformed opinion is that the Vive will be the one I go for, but if I have to wait 6 months or more for either then it will be massively frustrating .

The Oculus Rift is the first to release a consumer version, but if if I buy one now will I regret it later when the Vive is released... (whenever 'later' is if I have to wait 6 months to get one...)

Dilemmas and decisions

Have you tried any form of VR? The DK2 perhaps? DK1? Vive? Google cardboard even? And to claim people on here are total skinflints is silly. I am willing to bet that pretty mcuh all who have pre-ordered have tried VR, liked it and based their decision on that.

Not sure this thread is for you really.

It's a fair point - there's no official reviews out and always a high risk at this early stage of VR being in it's infancy. CV1 being the first ever VR consumer product with large investment, I can remember the first mobile phone :D it was crap - heavy and expensive but quite amazing. 30 years on we all have one.

Personally I love VR as i'm sure a fair few do on this thread it's a really interesting and exciting tech - Oculus in particular as they have formed a strong team with some of the best people in the industry.

Owning both of their headsets and even though far from perfection I have had a lot of fun with the experiences and demos, ED was a real wow factor.

Additionally sharing some of these experiences with Family and friends is quite entertaining.

I have no doubt VR is going to be BIG as soon as it becomes more affordable and needs to be driven with the need for new software to feed our hunger for entertainment and applications.

It's a shame that this tech is expensive for most however most early tech that is ground breaking has follows the same path (betamax first consumer models) was £1000 equivalent in today's money - ending up with units as little as £30 in it's peak of maturity, the CV1 will quickly become outdated replaced by the next revision and so on.. 16 different units currently in development from budget to high end if you take StarVR 5K example.

However this said I want to be part of the VR journey - hope I'm around to see it mature over the next 10-20 years.

For those who have pre-ordered the CV1 : UK Rifter was very impressed (as voiced on this video.) being one of the lucky ones to get a demo.

Pre-orders have now gone from March to July in the space of a few weeks - I predict this to be September a month from now. And as soon as the first official review goes viral end of March I envisage there will be a real supply and demand issue for these units.

So if you've pre-ordered one I wouldn't worry too much - quite the opposite really :)

Why are you lot spending 500 notes on a pre order with no reviews, oh i must be first in line to get this overpriced clunk:confused::confused::confused:

TBH it is all about the porn for me :D

Nah, I am very interested in experiencing a new medium of playing games. I like racing games and flight sims and this seems perfect for those types of games and a way of giving a sense of both depth and speed. I cannot wait. And if I don't like it, will sell it for possibly a small loss. No big deal.

Exactly same for me.
Except including porn :D

Yup, I tried the DK2, so am confident that the product and company are moving in the right direction etc. This makes up 75% of my decision to buy.

The final 25 will be based on reviews, but its not the cost that bothers me, its whether it works with certain games i've got in mind.

If it does, it could be 1000 notes and I reckon I'd still get it.

I look at people who bought titans for 800 and think 'really??' but then they probably made exactly the same decision. Just because I wouldnt doesnt mean someone else has to follow suit.

Hell theres enough people upgrade to the newest iphone for £600 every other year, mine worked fine for 5 years straight.

I was totally blown away by DK2. Despite the visible pixel structure and other wonkiness - I was more immersed in what were simple tech demos than in pretty much any aaa game in the last few years. If done right, games using VR will be awesome. Devlopers just need to play to it's strengths rather than trying to give us what we're used to with VR bolted on.

Same for me in monetary terms. The DK2 sold me with Elite Dangerous and that is pretty much the game that I see me playing for some considerable time with others thrown into it as well. I was more than happy with the price tag.
