Oculus Rift

I've heard that the current version forces you to install on your system drive. So you have the VR programs + the games on your C drive, which for most is your ssd.

They said they will change it in the next firmware update.

No problem - just create mklink junctions to another drive and a folder called 'Oculus games' or whatever

So who exactly is getting these right now? I've only seen a few people in America receiving consumer units so far.

They aren't shipping them direct from there, are they?

Palmer Luckey is in his car hand delivering every order to around the world, so it may be some time before you get yours. :D

those FOV images were taken with the camera pressed against the lens - your eye doesn't press against the lens and the Rift uses lenses that are significantly different to the lenses used by the other 3, hence why the pattern on the Rift is squarer

DK2 and Gear both use Aspheric lenses, the Vive uses a fresnel lens which gives the same effect but just allows the lens to be thinner (but can give off circular artefacts)... the Rift uses hybrid fresnel lenses... the only way to get an accurate image would be to measure what distance your pupil sits from the lens and take the images at that distance

You also cant measure a stereoscopic FOV using a single lens

The guy that took that image is a developer of a game that is only on Vive, so if the vive sells more, he sells more games, its pretty slimy

Got an april date so I'll wait for some proper 'unbiased' reviews to come out before deciding to keep or cancel... tbh I'm likely to keep and try.. disappointed about the lack of touch controllers or any inkling on the eventual cost /release date.

The rift reviews seem to be what I expected. Postive, but an undercurrent of ... yeah its a good start.

I don't think VR on rift is going to blow me away that much until those controllers are out. Vive however looks like it will.

I'm sorely tempted to cancel now and buy when the controllers are actually out.

Sure I'll miss out on my fav racing sim of the moment...but thats it.

Why buy both?

FWIW, the new drivers and Oculus home have made my DK2 feel like an entire new piece of Hardware, I'd expect the CV1 to be very good indeed but I haven't had the opportunity to try it.

Have had a quick go on the Vive Pre and it was a clear step up from my DK2 (and would expect CV1 to be similar)

I'm waiting for Touch and PSVR to come out before committing to this generation.

To me it's quite simple: If you can't wait to play pCars or Elite Dangerous in VR, then buy one of these now. If you're not bothered about either title...well there's not much point in buying VR as most of the content seems to be short lived "experiences" rather than end to end, full blown games.

For me, I couldn't care less about controllers or room scale; that's taking niche into a whole new niche altogether, because I don't have room, nor do I want to make room. I simply want an amazing seated experience in some kind of cockpit, and either of the 2 HMDs will deliver this.

FOV? SDE? Focus sweetspot? Comfort?

All valid things to consider, but frankly until the dust has settled and the Vive's are out there, we won't know anything for sure, other than....both will be awesome.

As much as I'm trying to hold off buying the CV1 I can't see myself lasting much longer (and a quick peek at a bank statement).

Do we know the price of the Oculus Touch yet?

Just installed occulus home and it says it can't detect a HMD. Does yours just switch on when you play a game?

Totally run out of space on my SSD. Had to delete loads of stuff just to install a few demos.

It switches on automatic starting home.

Goes into sleep mode if not touched for a while and can be manually turned off.

I had to skip skip skip to get through it, drivers made a huge difference.
