I was expecting tbh a solid launch from oculus and their lineup to not only include their 'VR experiences' but more of the adapted experiences that people were looking forward to, like project cars day one would have been pretty good. With the money facebook have they could have commissioned a title adaption themselves to ensure there was something ready.
It would have still lacked roomscale, but the early impression would be that even without touch the rift was worth the money and not some gimmick that you currently would only really want to play each of the demos once and then not pick up for 6 months while you wait for some titles, people have waited long enough and with the hype they need to see it and be impressed
I was even expecting that come the vive release, in side by side comparisons the rift may indeed be the better HMD if you didn't factor in the controllers, whether it be the picture/lens quality or ergonomics I was genuinely expecting to see something that when paired with touch later might actually be the better device. I thought purchasing the vive might be sacrificing a small amount for the sake of getting roomscale now, its the better day one option but I was not against switching camps later if the rift was the better device so ultimately I still want it to succeed.
First impressions count, and to the all the major blogs and publications this is the first impression for VR and for all their big talk, I honestly think oculus have royally screwed the pooch. They have taken something that instantly made people believe, into something that made people meh. It for now doesn't even sound like its winning on ergonomics
VR will recover but a giant bucket of cold water has been thrown on everything, and that only hurts the vive. It'll put doubt in the minds of major developers as to whether they should jump in or wait.
HTC as a competitor are almost banking their future on it while facebook have billions and can sit on their hands and wait out this fiasco, A cynical person might think they have done this intentionally. Facebook itself is a massive advertising platform where they can manipulate how much visibility positive and negative comments about something are, they could easily turn the tide when they want people to think its suddenly awesome, its already acknowledged that they have experimented in doing exactly that.
