Oculus Rift

I was expecting tbh a solid launch from oculus and their lineup to not only include their 'VR experiences' but more of the adapted experiences that people were looking forward to, like project cars day one would have been pretty good. With the money facebook have they could have commissioned a title adaption themselves to ensure there was something ready.

It would have still lacked roomscale, but the early impression would be that even without touch the rift was worth the money and not some gimmick that you currently would only really want to play each of the demos once and then not pick up for 6 months while you wait for some titles, people have waited long enough and with the hype they need to see it and be impressed

I was even expecting that come the vive release, in side by side comparisons the rift may indeed be the better HMD if you didn't factor in the controllers, whether it be the picture/lens quality or ergonomics I was genuinely expecting to see something that when paired with touch later might actually be the better device. I thought purchasing the vive might be sacrificing a small amount for the sake of getting roomscale now, its the better day one option but I was not against switching camps later if the rift was the better device so ultimately I still want it to succeed.

First impressions count, and to the all the major blogs and publications this is the first impression for VR and for all their big talk, I honestly think oculus have royally screwed the pooch. They have taken something that instantly made people believe, into something that made people meh. It for now doesn't even sound like its winning on ergonomics

VR will recover but a giant bucket of cold water has been thrown on everything, and that only hurts the vive. It'll put doubt in the minds of major developers as to whether they should jump in or wait.

HTC as a competitor are almost banking their future on it while facebook have billions and can sit on their hands and wait out this fiasco, A cynical person might think they have done this intentionally. Facebook itself is a massive advertising platform where they can manipulate how much visibility positive and negative comments about something are, they could easily turn the tide when they want people to think its suddenly awesome, its already acknowledged that they have experimented in doing exactly that.

To me it's quite simple: If you can't wait to play pCars or Elite Dangerous in VR, then buy one of these now. If you're not bothered about either title...well there's not much point in buying VR as most of the content seems to be short lived "experiences" rather than end to end, full blown games.

According to many reviewers even these experiences are a clumsy mess in VR. and when both games support a more refined experience through TrackIR for those serious enough to care, it almost raises the question of why bother?

I dont think this launch has been great at all, the lack of killing game or even app is disappointing given the sheer amount of time VR has been in devs hands. (and no Eve:V, is not a killer app ffs)

What backdoor shady reviews have people been reading? Every one that I've read from reputable outlets seems to be generally positive.

I wouldn't expect a killer app within the first cycle, especially as the barrier for entry is so high for consumers. Also, developing for VR isn't the same as any old software development as the user experience is something entirely different to other mediums.

wow - sheer clickbait.

Both those games are well known to have the smoothest VR support of just about any other pc games out there.

Could you link your sources to these "many reviewers"?

Also to give you something to get your teeth into check out Vireio Perception & Vorpx drivers which are basically cludges (OK injectors, wrappers or whatever the technical term is) to get normal games to work in stereoscopic 3D in VR.

This is flippin 3D Vision all over again where in that case it was to get games working on the 3D Vision kit it was supposed to work with in the first place!

Sheer Clickbait? Do you even know what that means, evidentially not!
How about the 12 hour GB stream where they went through every single game/demo/video on Monday, where it was quite clear (with both what was on screen and what they were saying) that both Eve and PrCars were far from smooth experiences.

By all means check it out

So one source then......

Me thinks someone doesn't know what "clickbait" means;)

Already said in the post above yours.

We already know you are Vives no.1 fan

Which I bet you didn't even bother to look at.
That's cool though, you carry on playing the fools game, it's become evident that you are pretty biased and I haven't got time for that.

You wacthed all 12 hours, sure you did  I did skim through the serialised version, but to be honest can only stand so much of Jeff Gerstmann he is so grumpy and dull.

So biased I went to a Vive demo on my lunch on Tuesday, it's even in the Vive thread if you bothered to look, damn I'm biased.

What is this 'fools game', is it on Oculus or Vive :p

Clickbait
content, especially that of a sensational or provocative nature, whose main purpose is to attract attention and draw visitors

Yours qualifies and i don't need someone else to tell me that neither Elite or Project Cars is not smooth or adequately supported in VR when ive played both fairly extensively in the DK2. And both have had VR dedicated support for a looonng time....

Annnd the Pcars developers themselves confirmed the following:

For those concerned about performance - I spent a few days with Oculus last week at the Press Days event in San Francisco, and we were demoing the game to press on an Oculus minimum spec PC. We had no performance issues at all, and everyone who played it enjoyed it thoroughly, so you should be all good as long as you meet or exceed that.

so yeah uhmm try harder yeah?

edit: and yes i am aware of other issues with Project Cars outlined in this thread

https://forums.oculus.com/community...bad-no-support-from-arrogant-developer#latest

But its absolutely ridiculous to claim that it is a buggy mess. I have experienced zero bugs playing it in the Dk2 and the dev team seem to be releasing regular VR updates to it. Im sure there will be a few patches to get the CV1 up to super smooth standard on 1.3 but you are blowing this waaay out of proportion.

The silence on orders is shocking.

Hardly anyone has recieved one or even been given a basic date of when they will get one.

I have mine ordered and in no hurry but some basic communication wouldn't go amiss. They really arent making the most of this opportunity.

^^ yeah thats one thing - the launch i dont think has been perfect. Its more of a staggered or soft launch because lots of folk will be waiting weeks/months for their rift.

Tbh you wouldn't have known there was a launch as it seems hardly anyone has got anything.

If there is an issue or a delay then a clear and simple email informing people would calm a lot of people down.

For the money people have paid, basic order tracking should be minimal. Not stuck at preorder or 1 to 3 weeks with no other info.

That said the more people moan and cancel preorders the quicker i may get mine haha.

I am very glad I have a Vive on the way soon, as I'd be even more annoyed at Oculus for not providing any shipping information. At least in a way people haven't actually paid yet as far as I can tell, or very few at least. I'd be super annoyed if they'd taken money like HTC had done and still not heard a peep.

Cancelled my rift and vive pre orders. Going to see how it all pans out over the next few months and see how everyone else gets on with their units. Wether that be the vive or rift.
